CEZ Basketball Nymburk had a strong start in the 2008-09 Eurocup season by downing Montenegrin powerhouse Buducnost m:tel 75-70 in Pardubice, the Czech Republic in Group H on Tuesday. Nymburk visits Hemofarm Stada next week, in which Buducnost hosts iurbentia Bilbao Basket. Justin Gray paced the winners with 22 points on 6-for-6 two-pointers. Arthur Lee added 13 and 9 assists, Blake Schilb had 12 points while Ladislav Sokolovsky and Petr Benda each got 10 for Nymburk. Vladimir Micov led Buducnost with 16 points. Ivan Maras added 14, Nemanja Gordic 11 and Nikola Otasevic 10. Benda and Gray allowed Nymburk to get a 18-16 edge after 10 minutes. Gray and Lee took over early in the second quarter to make it a 13-point game, 31-18. Micov and Vladimir Dasic stepped up to bring Buducnost within 37-31 at halftime. Micov kept pacing Buducnost to complete the guests' comeback, 41-42, soon after the break. Back-to-back triples by Sokolovsky gave Nymburk a 54-48 margin after 30 minutes. Nymburk soon restored a double-digit edge, 60-50, while an outstanding Gray took over in crunch time. Buducnost had two chances to tie the game, but Dasic and Gordic missed from downtown in the final seconds. Free throws by Schilb allowed all Nymburk fans to celebrate a big win.
Goran Jagodnik got Nymburk going with a layup that Maras quickly erased in the other end. Lee sank a jumper, igniting a 6-0 run that Schilb capped with free throws for a 8-2 Nymburk edge. Milos Bojovic and Dasic rescued Buducnost but Schilb dunked it to keep the hosts ahead at 10-6. Maras insisted with a left-handed layup while Dasic banked in a triple to give Buducnost its first lead, 10-11. Benda scored twice inside but Micov answered to tie it at 16-16. A buzzer-beating driving basket by Gray made Nymburk regain the lead, 18-16, after 10 minutes. Otasevic scored in penetration right at the start of the second quarter but Gray and Lee combined for 9 points in an 13-0 Nymburk run that Sokolovsky capped with a floating layup to give the hosts a 31-18 margin. Gordic finally scored for Buducnost while Schilb and Micov traded free throws for a 33-22 score. Dasic shined with a fast break dunk but Sokolovsky scored off a Nymburk timeout to keep his team way ahead, 35-24. Gordic, Nemanja Simonovic and Dasic brought Buducnost back to life, 37-31, at halftime.
Maras scored after the break and soon added a layup-plus-foul to get Buducnost back in the game, 39-37. The hosts kept struggling to score while free throws by Gordic and Micov completed the guests' comeback, 39-40. Nymburk called timeout to change its defense, as it had already entered the foul bonus. Lee and Micov traded layups, Jagodnik and Marko Popovic struck from downtown while free throws by Lee and a dunk by Benda gave Nymburk a 48-46 lead. Sokolovsky nailed back-to-back triples - one from each corner - for a 54-48 Nymburk margin after 30 minutes. Michal Kremen joined the three-point shootout early in the fourth quarter. Benda scored inside while Lee made free throws to make Nymburk restore a double-digit lead at 60-50. Otasevic buried a three-pointer and Gordic added a jumper to give Buducnost some hope, 61-55, with over 4 minutes to go. Gray followed a jumper with a driving layup but Simonovic kept Buducnost in the game, 65-59. Gray scored again in penetration, hit a triple and soon added free throws for a 72-65 Nymburk lead. Buducnost was not done, however, as free throws by Otasevic and a three-point play by Gordic brought the guests within 72-70. Lee made a free throw with 34 seconds remaining and even when Dasic missed from downtown, Nymburk committed a quick turnover. Gordic also missed from three-point range while free throws by Schilb sealed the outcome down the stretch.
