UNICS piles on the points to eliminate Cedevita

UNICS Kazan produced an offensive masterclass for the second consecutive week to demolish Cedevita Zagreb 83-100, eliminating the winless Croatian team. UNICS, which improved to 3-1, scored a club record 62 points in the first half and withstood a brief fourth-quarter rally from the hosts to cruise home. The Russian team was paced by 20 points from Evgeny Kolesnikov on 4-of-4 three-point shooting. Melvin Ejim scored 18, making 7-of-9 field goal attempts. Jamar Smith added 16 points and Raymar Morgan combined 10 points with 7 rebounds for the victors. Elgin Cook did his best to lift Cedevita with 18 points, while Toni Katic added 12.

Cedevita made a fast start with a trio of three-pointers, including two from Cook. Trent Lockett led the response from UNICS with 7 fast points and a pair of long-range strikes from Kolesnikov helped send the visitors ahead. Maurice NDour made a couple of long-range jumpers as UNICS pulled away. Morgan scored twice to make it 23-31 after the first quarter. Three-pointers from McCollum and Smith made it 23-39 early in the second before a long-range strike from Darko Bajo pulled the hosts closer. Five more points for Smith retained a comfortable lead and Pierria Henry's deep strike took the visitors to 50 points. NDour's dunk took the margin to 20 points, but Justin Cobbs crowned a 6-1 run to finish the half with Cedevita holding a modicum of hope at 45-62. Smith and Kolesnikov netted from long-range early in the second half and Kostas Kaimakoglou scored twice before the UNICS scoring spree finally slowed to make it 67-84 at the end of the third. A 10-0 run early in the final quarter, crowned by Jacob Pullen's triple and Katic's long two, briefly reduced the deficit to 7 points, but Morgan, Smith and Ejim scored in a 0-9 run to steady the UNICS ship and put the outcome beyond doubt, before Smith's third triple took his team to three figures in the final minute.

UNICS becomes double-centurion

Cedevita will be sick with the sight of UNICS, which has now scored 205 points past the Croatian champs in the last week, following up Round 3's crushing 105-70 home win with another triple-figure offensive show on the road.

First half run gives UNICS control

The game was blown open with a 2-17 run bridging the end of the first and the start of the second quarters. UNICS made 7 of its 10 field goals attempts during that five-minute blitz and led by double figures nearly all the way from that moment.

New club record in first half blitz

UNICS raced to 62 points before the break – a new club record on the road in the EuroCup – thanks to incredible shooting accuracy: the Russian team made 14 of 18 two-point shots (77.8%) and 8 of 11 three-pointers (72.7%) in the opening half, also dishing 14 assists.

Next round

Round 5 will see UNICS stay on the road for a Russian derby at Zenit St. Petersburg, while Cedevita will travel to Morabanc Andorra.

Head Coaches

RIMAC, SLAVEN
Cedevita Zagreb
"At the beginning of the game, we were not ready mentally. We didn't have so many problems on offense, but defensively we didn’t react. We were not aggressive, we didn’t make fouls when they beat us, they got their confidence and after that it was difficult. The second half was a little better and overall I’m not dissatisfied."
PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
UNICS Kazan
"For us, it was a game we should win. At the end, we relaxed and allowed Cedevita to come very close and this is something we have to correct. We have to play for 40 minutes if we want to be a good level team. We have a good squad with good characters, but we have to be more stable defensively. I want to congratulate my players and wish the best of luck to Cedevita."

Players

BULJEVIC, LOVRO
Cedevita Zagreb
"First of all, I want to congratulate UNICS. They are a very good team. We started the game poorly and in the second half we played a little bit better, but it wasn’t enough."
COOK, ELGIN
Cedevita Zagreb
"They’re a great team, they've got lots of players who can score and they run some great sets. We made mistakes and they made us pay for it. But we'll get ready for our next game."
EJIM, MELVIN
UNICS Kazan
"We were making shots, we got to where we wanted to be offensively. They’re a good team, but we were firing on all cylinders. It's important to get off to a good start' that's what the coaches have been preaching, we stayed aggressive and maintained it through the game."
