Unics is the new champ - Unics celebrates - Finals Treviso 2011 - EC10

Unics is the new Eurocup champ!

Unics Kazan dominated Cajasol Sevilla 92-77 to finish the 2011 season as the Eurocup champion. Maciej Lampe scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Marko Popovic added 18 points and set a Eurocup Finals record with 11 assists to lead Unics to a historic win at the Palaverde in Treviso, Italy. The result also gives the Russian club an automatic bid to the 2011-12 Euroleague Regular Season. Unics dominated early, making 9 of 14 two-pointers and 4 of 4 triples in the first quarter, as Kelly McCarty and Lampe led their team to a 32-16 lead after 10 minutes. Unics increased the lead to 20 before settling for 51-36 at halftime. Outstanding defense brought Cajasol within 55-48 after the break and gave the Spanish side a chance in the fourth quarter. However Unics was too strong down the stretch and took over again in the last half of the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The win is Unics’s first Eurocup title and second continental trophy after winning the 2004 FIBA Europa League. McCarty scored 18 points in winning his second title in the competition and Terrell Lyday tallied 15 for the winners. Louis Bullock and Txemi Urtasun paced Cajasol with 15 points apiece and Tariq Kirksay and Juanjo Triguero netted 10 each.

Kirksay got Cajasol going with his trademark jump hook that Popovic erased with a layup in transition. Lampe took over with a tip-in, as Cajasol struggled to lock the defensive boards despite using a more aggressive starting frontcourt featuring Kaloyan Ivanov and Paul Davis. The latter made free throws for a 4-4 tie. Lyday dunked off a baseline drive and soon added a fast break basket for an 8-4 Unics lead. Vladimir Veremeenko scored down low and Lampe added a backdoor layup that caused Cajasol to call timeout down 12-4. Lampe kept pacing Unics with an uncontested layup and added free throws to cap a 12-0 Unics run. Cajasol kept missing open shots until Triguero shined with a jump hook. Cajasol tried Kirksay at point guard to have Bullock and Urtasun at both ends. McCarty struck from downtown, but a driving layup by Bullock kept Cajasol within 19-8. Popovic then joined the three-point shootout. Ivanov and Kirksay tried to change things for their team, but McCarty beat Cajasol's zone defense with a big triple and Popovic copied him right after that to break the game open, 28-13. Urtasun struck from downtown only to see Lampe answer quickly with a jump hook and McCarty provided a highlight with a fast break dunk, good for a 32-16 Unics lead after 10 minutes.

Cajasol improved its defense early in the second quarter and Triguero sank a five-meter jumper to make it 32-18. McCarty rescued Unics with a fast break layup, as coach Joan Plaza brought Earl Calloway into the game. Lyday made free throws that Urtasun erased with a driving layup. Unics tried Ricky Minard at point guard to give Lyday better one-on-one options at shooting guard. A technical foul on Cajasol coach Plaza allowed Lyday to make it an 18-point game. Veremeenko shined with a backdoor layup that made Cajasol call a much-needed timeout at 40-20. Mindaugas Katelynas tried to ignite Cajasol's comeback with a triple, but his team had already entered the foul bonus and Unics took advantage of it. Veremeenko made free throws that Calloway bettered with a three-pointer. Davis scored down low and free throws by Bullock brought Cajasol back to life at 42-30. McCarty split free throws and another three-pointer by Popovic kept Unics way out of trouble, 46-30. Zakhar Pashutin also hit from downtown, but Bullock followed free throws with a jumper off a steal to give Cajasol hope at 49-34. Kirksay sank foul shots, but a floating layup by McCarty fixed the halftime score at 51-36.

Kirksay stepped up with a put-back basket immediately after the break and Triguero added a backdoor layup to being his team as close as 51-40. Lyday shined with a jumper that Bullock matched with an outstanding rainbow shot. Cajasol was all over the place on defense and a layup by Katelynas got his team within single digits, 53-44. Lampe took over with a high-flying tip-in, but Katelynas set the Cajasol fans on fire with a wild alley-oop dunk. Unics kept struggling to score and a wild slam by Triguero made the Russian powerhouse call timeout at 55-48. Hasan Rizvic rolled off a high post pick for a layup and Popovic added an outstanding driving basket to restore a 59-48 Unics lead. Bullock buried one from downtown and traded free throws with McCarty to make it 61-53. Rizvic scored in transition and more free throws by McCarty made it a 12-point game, 65-53. Urtasun did not miss from the foul line, but Rizvic kept scoring under the basket. Katelynas made foul shots, as Cajasol kept using full court press after free throws made. Popovic made 4 free throws, however Unics faced severe trouble as Rizvic fouled out and Veremeenko was on the floor with 4. A three-pointer by Calloway brought Cajasol back in the game, 71-62, after three quarters.

Lampe knocked down a five-meter jumper early in the fourth quarter, as Cajasol tried to play with even more intensity in defense. Urtasun shined with a driving basket, but Lampe scored in the paint to keep Unics ahead by 11. Ivanov brought the Cajasol fans to their feet with a put-back slam, but a free throw by McCarty saw Unics restore a double-digit lead, 76-66, with over six minutes left. Lampe stayed on fire with a two-handed slam and soon added a put-back layup to force coach Plaza to call timeout at 80-66. Cajasol tried Kirksay at point guard again and Veremeenko fouled out, forcing coach Evgeny Pashutin to use McCarty at power forward. Unics kept powering the boards despite using a three-guard lineup. Triguero banked in a close shot that Lampe erased with a tip-in. Lyday then essentially sealed the outcome with a three-pointer that made it 85-68. Cajasol kept trying, but everything was said and done already. A three-pointer by Lyday allowed all Unics players and fans to celebrate that their team was the new Eurocup champion!

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
UNICS Kazan
"I am so happy. You can't imagine how happy, especially for the guys. They did everything, put their maximum on the court. They played great basketball, maybe not for all 40 minutes, but for most of it, they were incredible. I love my team. I am so happy. This is what we play for, what we're living for, what we're fighting for. It's our goal, everybody loves basketball, and to be Eurocup champion, it's a big honor for all your life, to the end. To be here on the top is not easy, and especially for a Russian team like ours, it’s a big, big step up. We made a name until now, but this shows we are growing up and will step up for the Euroleague now."
"First of all, I am really proud of my players and really happy for them. They gave a maximum effort on the floor tonight and fought all together to win the Eurocup. They stepped up on the court. I appreciate their effort and am really proud of them. Unics represents Kazan and Russia and we have taken a big step forward. We have made it to the Euroleague and that has been a dream for this club and for the city of Kazan for many years. It is finaly in our hands! I want to thank everybody. It has been a great organization, a great game, a fantastic weekend and we have worked in the best conditions. I feel like I can fly to the sky, I am so happy and thankful."
"I don't think we will sleep tonight. We have a lot of emotions going on, loads of them. We all love basketball. It is the best ball game in the world. We did something big in basketball and also for us, of course. Basketball has allowed us to be part of the European family. I have no words, thanks a lot to all of you!"
PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Seville
"First of all, I want to thank everyone who believed in us, not only in Sevilla, but also in Malaga, Granada, Madrid, Barcelona and everywhere in Spain, feeling like Cajasol fans. We felt their support and the hope of seeing us win the competition. I would like to say that 32 teams played the Eurocup, we went to the Last 16, the Quarterfinals and the Eurocup Finals, reaching the title game. In order to lose finals, you have to play them. We have to be very proud with the season we had, not only this year, but the previous one. It is sad and hard to see my coaching staff, team delegate, doctors and press officer cry in the locker room. They have been in this club for many years. They deserved more than anybody to win the game and I dedicate our Eurocup run to them. As for the game, we gave our best and tried to think that would be able to play a game with so many physical handicaps 24 hours after the semifinal. I really thank my players who played in pain, risking injury. I thank everyone that managed to step on court with physical problems and the effort they put out there. I hope that people in Sevilla will be able to thank them. Unics broke the game in the first quarter, scoring 30 points. We never allowed that many points in one quarter. They were the best team and we have no excuses. It was a big mountain to overcome and I don't blame my players. We couldn't do better. Congratulations to Unics, they had a great Eurocup and are a deserving champion. Best of luck to them."
"Being realistic, we went beyond our top level. Our will, desire and great group of people allowed us to go beyond our limits. My coaching staff is crying in the locker rooms and we have management people willing to learn. Again, we went all the way from the regular season to the Eurocup final. The club must improve, also the players and the coach has to learn to try to do better if we are given the opportunity.”

Players

LYDAY, TERRELL
UNICS Kazan
"There's no word to describe how I am feeling right now. It's an unbelievable feeling. We just came in focused this weekend. We were the favorites, and we felt we had something to prove. It's not easy being the favorites. We had a bull's eye on our head, but we decided we were going to prove it, and we did. This was three years coming for us. That helped us all season, everyone knowing each other and fighting for one goal."
POPOVIC, MARKO
UNICS Kazan
"It's great. It's been now three years since I played my last Euroleague game, and I have really enjoyed being part of this team. The Eurocup once again proved to be a high-level competition, and it's a joy to be a part of this basketball family. First of all, I am proud of myself and my teammates for what we did. This is a huge thing for us and for our club. We don't want to stop here. We know how good we are. That's what we proved in the last two games. We ran out of energy at the end, but we are champions, and that's a great feeling. I became a father not too long ago. That was the best feeling of my life, but this is probably the second best."
LAMPE, MACIEJ
UNICS Kazan
"It's kind of hard to describe this feeling. I've got to let it sink in. We're very happy of the way we played and the way we performed. This game wasn't as easy as it seemed maybe because we were up by 20 at one point. It's been a long road coming to this point, with a lot of ups and downs this year, but we have true professionals on this team. They stick together, work hard every day and know what it takes to win.”
“We've been playing this way the whole year, spreading the floor. We have big men with good feet who are able to move the ball, and that allows us to get rebounds, because we fight under the basket. And we have good point guards who know how to distribute the ball, and that's key, too."
VEREMEENKO, VLADIMIR
UNICS Kazan
"We prepared all year for this moment, to win the championship. We had planned to go to the Euroleague in the qualifying round, but we couldn't. Our last chance to go to the Euroleague was to do it this way, and we did. There is only one emotion now: just happy. Maybe two or three months ago we started to play with the pick-and-roll, we beat some teams, and we thought, 'Why not keep playing this way?' It was key for us to get a lot of points. We beat everyone with this pick-and-roll game."
CALLOWAY, EARL
Cajasol Seville
"Unics got the win and that's about it. They had a really strong start of the game and played well. We had the chance to get back in the game, but could not do it. We have to be proud of the team we have and especially for our fans. It is really tough to lose this game, but we will have the chance to look back on the season and see we had a very good run."
URTASUN, TXEMI
Cajasol Seville
"It was really tough for us to get in the game. They got a big lead and we trailed all the way from that moment. A journalist asked me a while ago if making it to the Eurocup Finals and losing it would make it a disappointing season. There are 32 teams in this competition and right now we don't appreciate being second because we still think we could have been the champions. But of course, it has been a great Eurocup season for us."
DAVIS, PAUL
Cajasol Seville
"Unics has been the best Eurocup team all season. They made a lot of tough shots and executed their game plan really well. They played really well together and it was a very deserving win for them. We didn't have our best game, but are happy we made it this far. It is tough to lose in the final. It was a great Eurocup season for us, nobody thought we would make it this far. Obviously, we wish we would have won the championship, but it was a good run for the fans, the club and the city. It is something to remember and to try to get back to at some point."
