Unicaja beats ALBA to advance to quarterfinals

Unicaja Malaga stormed into the 7DAYS EuroCup quarterfinals by downing ALBA Berlin 83-77 in Group H of the Top 16 at home on Wednesday. Unicaja improved to 3-2 in Group H and clinched second place to keep fighting for EuroCup glory. ALBA dropped to 1-4 and has run out of chances to advance. Peyton Siva led ALBA with 15 points, Dragan Milosavljevic added 11 and Elmedin Kikanovic had 10 for the visitors. Unicaja led 67-58 early in the fourth quarter, but ALBA rallied to tie the game at 71-71 with four minutes to go. Waczynski and Jeff Brooks each hit a triple in a 10-2 run that sealed the outcome. Unicaja outrebounded ALBA 36-21 and buried 15 of 28 three-point shots (53.6%).

Kikanovic and Siva got ALBA going, but a three-pointer by Alberto Diaz and a step-back jumper by Jeff Brooks gave Unicaja a 5-4 lead. Tony Gaffney followed a dunk with a fast break layup that ignited a 0-9 run, which Milosavljevic capped with a triple for a 5-13 ALBA lead. Unicaja found a go-to guy in Nedovic, who struck three times from downtown and got help from Waczynski to put the hosts in charge, 19-18. Carlos Suarez made free throws and Fogg dunked, but Engin Atsur kept ALBA within 23-20 after 10 minutes. A layup by Malcolm Miller and a triple by Atsur tied the game at 25-25 early in the second quarter. Fogg and Jamar Smith combined for all the points in an 8-0 run that put Unicaja ahead 33-25. A put-back slam by Brooks soon gave the hosts their first double-digit lead, 38-27. Gaffney and Siva tried to change things for ALBA but Dejan Musli, Nedovic and Oliver Lafayette kept Unicaja fully in charge, 47-39, at halftime. Gaffney followed a three-pointer with an alley-oop layup to make it 49-44 after the break. Nedovic kept pushing Unicaja, Waczynski hit from beyond the arc and Fogg added back-to-back triples for a 62-51 Unicaja margin. Bodgan Radosavljevic and Miller brought ALBA within 65-58 after 30 minutes. Ismet Akpinar and Atsur each struck from downtown in a 1-10 run that tied the game at 68-68 with seven minutes left. "I have been having good vibrations for a few weeks now. The team has all it needs to do something great - I don't know how to measure it, but we can do something great. We are finding our way as a team. Since allowing 101 against Real Madrid in our first Spanish League game, we have been able to allow 25 points less. As in other years, we are allowing around 76 points per game and that is a starting point which so much talent in our hands. Our players are working together on defense. Being close to the semifinals in each competition would be beautiful and playing finals would be great. Obviously, when you overcome obstacles, you are in the right ay to reach your goals. ALBA is not an easy team to beat, because it defense forces you to turnovers and makes you anxious - especially if you are in the situation that you advanced with a win. We had better percentages than them in all distances and also won in rebounds. We deserved to win the game, we moved on to the next round and grew as a team. Some of my players have to get used to this level. We will play tough, do-or-die game games but the team is growing in the right direction."
