Westermann’s big game leads Zalgiris over Baskonia

Leo Westermann scored a career-high 20 points to carry Zalgiris Kaunas over Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz 78-73 on Friday at Zalgirio Arena. Zalgiris improved to 1-1 on the season, while Baskonia slipped to the same mark. Westermann made 7 of 9 two-point shots and dished 4 assists in an impressive effort. Brock Motum added 12 points and Arturas Milaknis 9 for the winners. Adam Hanga paced Baskonia with 18 points, Andrea Bargnani scored 17 points and blocked 3 shots before fouling out and Shane Larkin totaled 11 points and 6 assists. Zalgiris dominated the glass in outrebounding the visitors 44-32, including 18 offensive rebounds. Zalgiris faces Fenerbahce Istanbul in its next EuroLeague game, while Baskonia takes on fellow Spanish side Real Madrid.

After the visitors scored the game’s first 6 points, Kevin Pangos and Westermann drained triples to put Zalgiris up 8-6. Bargnani was a force for Baskonia as the two teams traded shots throughout the quarter, which ended at 20-23 after Hanga’s steal and slam. Jaka Blazic staked Baskonia to a 24-31 advantage, however Zalgiris pounded the offensive glass in closing the gap to 2. Bargnani’s jumper made it 34-40 at the break. Baskonia got more great shooting from Bargnani and Hanga to start the second half, but a pair of Antanas Kavaliauskas buckets inside kept the hosts close. Milaknis and Westermann further closed the gap before Motum put Zalgiris ahead 53-52. Nothing separated the teams at the end of the third quarter, 61-61. A Westermann layup with five minutes to go gave Zalgiris its first two-possession lead, 72-68. Baskonia struggled to recover and was hampered by 4 missed free throws down the stretch, while Westermann and Motum made key baskets to seal the 78-73 victory.

"We gave up less easy points [in the second half]. We hit some shots. We played a little more physical, I believe, and Leo Westermann, I think, put the team on his shoulders. [This victory] has to give the guys the confidence that when we do things right, when we follow the game plan, we will have many chances to win games. I think in the first half we slipped a little bit. It’s not easy for the players to play in front of their new fans at the beginning of the season, but they will get used to it. "

"We played pretty well in the first 20 minutes, but we had a problem to break the game because they had the opportunity to get all of the offensive rebounds when they missed. They got 15 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. And this detail was very important why we arrived at halftime tied, or leading by 3 or 4 points. At the start of the second half, we played very well in offense for four minutes, but the key for me was that after we scored easily, we allowed them to score easily. They went under the baskets the first time with Kavaliauskas and then the point guard. These kinds of details, knowing how to kill the game, are very important. After that they played harder. We played a little bit softer than them and we were frustrated. "

"Coach gave us a game plan and we followed it. In the last games we made a lot of mistakes with the game plan and this time we stuck to it, so it was great for us. We played hard. We got a lot of offensive rebounds. Our crowd was beautiful tonight and it helped us to get this win. I tried tonight to give my best because Coach believes in me and I want to show him that he was right when he brought me here. "
