The Torneo Citta di Roma once again has a new champion and it is none other than KK Spars Sarajevo. In the final game on Saturday night in Rome, Spars downed Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul 73-55, finishing the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record and becoming the first team to earn a ticket to the final round of the Nike International Junior Tournament, which will be played from May 9 to 12, 2013, coinciding with the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four! Doko Salic was named the tournament MVP, and he led the winners in the finals with 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Aleksej Nikolic had 18 points. Berk Ugurlu scored 24 points for Fenerbahce, which will have to settle for the second place.
Spars stormed out of the gate, as Salic opened the game with 5 unanswered points, and after Nikolic strung together 7 points of his own, Spars was on its way to 18-3 lead. James Birsen and Ugurlu got Fenerbahce going, making the first quarter end with the score 23-13, and after a span when single-handedly Salic kept Spars in the double-digit lead, Ugurlu contributed with 7 points in a 0-9 second-quarter run to cut the deficit to 31-28. However, Salic started another Spars’ spurt, helping the team go into halftime in front 40-30, and midway through the third quarter Nedim Buza and Nikolic each hit a three-pointer in a 11-2 run that gave Spars 56-41 advantage going into the final quarter. Fenerbahce gave it another push with Ugurlu scoring 9 consecutive points, but a triple from Atif Durak and couple of jumpers from Buza sealed the deal. Besides Salic and Nikolic, Buza was also in double figures for the victors, finishing with 13 points, while Birsen had 9 points plus 13 rebounds for Fenerbahce.
