PAOK Thessaloniki celebrates (photo paokbc.gr)Fans in Thessaloniki, Greece witnessed an absolute thriller to open Group F as host PAOK defeated hard-charging Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 85-84 when D.J. Cooper unleashed a three-point buzzer beater for the seventh, and final, lead change in the game's last 2 minutes! Buducnost had led for most of the middle quarters, but couldn't fend off PAOK's final rush after Aleksandar Capin made 1 of 2 free throws for the visitors with 7 seconds left. PAOK got the ball to Cooper, who had made both his three-point tries before that, and this time he did not miss, either! PAOK got a monster game from center Giorgos Bogris, who more than doubled his previous Eurocup career-high with 28 points on 12-for-19 two-point shooting. Cooper added 16 points, Michalis Tsairelis 15 and Kostas Charalampidis 10 for PAOK. Cooper's 8 assists were more than Buducnost as a team. The visitors got 4 three-point strikes and 22 points from Aleksa Popovic. Vladimir Mihailovic added 15, Capin 14 and Jeleel Akindele 12 points and 12 rebounds, but by the barest of margins, it wasn't enough to steal a road win.

PAOK followed Bogris and his 6 points to an early 14-10 advantage and then went back inside to him for 4 more points to finish the first quarter in charge, 24-19. Buducnost came back to tie 26-26 on 5 points in a row by Mihailovic, who kept scoring and getting to the foul line until he had 11 points and his team was on its way to a 34-38 halftime lead. After Tsairelis got PAOK back within 42-43, a pair three-pointers by Popovic thrust Buducnost in front again, 48-54. The lead hit double-digits on William Coleman's dunk before the visitors held on 52-58 after 30 minutes. PAOK went back to Bogris to get closer. His 6 points early in the final quarter and a four-point play by D.J. Cooper cut the difference to 63-64. Dueling triples by Apollon Tsochlas and Popovic assured a finish as close as the rest of the game. Six lead changes followed a three-point play by Bogris as PAOK went ahead 76-74 with 1:42 to play. Buducnost seemed in control as Capin and Suad Sehovic made it 80-83 with 11 seconds left, but after free throws and timeouts, PAOK had one more chance, inbounding with 7 seconds to play, and Cooper made it an opportunity the home fans will never forget.

Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"Congratulations to my players for a great effort during the game. The players believed in the victory, they had confidence and we got a huge victory in the beginning of the competition against a very good team. We have continuous games ahead and there is only natural that there is going to be fatigue, but it's something we have to deal with. It's very positive for us to have started in such a fashion."
JOVOVIC, IGOR
Buducnost Voli Podgorica
"It's very stressful when you lose a game like this in the last second. I think we had a couple of chances to finish the game earlier, but we missed them, and one of the keys to our loss has been the terrible free throws percentage, with 16 out of 29 free throws you can never win an away game. There are a lot of games ahead of us, we need to protect our home court and improve on some aspects of our game, and see what happens."

Players

COOPER, DJ
PAOK Thessaloniki
"I tip my hat off to my teammates, it was a great victory, we were trailing at some points in the game, but the coaches have done a great job preparing us for a situations like that. We are proud to have stayed together as a team and made a great play at the end that gave us the victory. It was great teamwork. I'm blessed to have taken that shot, I had actually done the same last night at the scrimmage, but it's the first time I make a shot that important and it's great the coaches had confidence in me to take it."
AKINDELE, JELEEL
Buducnost Voli Podgorica
"It was a tough loss, we have to tip our hats to our opponents for making a great play at the last second, after a tough 40-minute fight. We have to work mainly on some defensive plays and move on, there is a long competition ahead of us."
