Madrid leaves it late to edge EA7 Milan

Real Madrid rallied in the fourth quarter to pull off a 94-89 win over visiting EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. Madrid extended its win streak to six games as it continues to share league best 15-5 record with CSKA Moscow. Milan was defeated after two consecutive wins, and holds a 6-14 record at the bottom of the standings. Milan led for majority of the second half, but never held more than a 6-point lead at 50-56. In the fourth quarter, Madrid used baskets from Luka Doncic, Jaycee Carroll and Sergio Llull to pull even, Othello Hunter got a pair of key baskets, before Llull and Doncic sealed the deal. Llull finished with 20 points and 9 assists. Doncic had 17 points in less than 19 minutes on the floor. Carroll netted 16 points, Hunter 12, and Ayon scored 10 in victory for Madrid which played without Rudy Fernandez. Krunoslav Simon scored 20 points for Milan. Zoran Dragic added 13, and Miroslav Raduljica had 12 points in defeat.

Both teams did a lot better on offense than on defense in the first half. Madrid established an advantage due to its three triples by Llull, Jeffrey Taylor and Jonas Maciulis, but Simon, Milan Macvan and Jamel McLean helped the visitors keep in touch. Madrid was up 22-18 after 10 minutes, but Milan went in front behind a balanced offense which had 9 different players score by the time the visitors went up 30-31. Llull’s and Doncic’s triples got Madrid back up 44-39, but Milan scored the last 7 points of the first half, including Ricky Hickman’s tough triple, and the visitors held 46-49 at halftime. After the break, Milan kept the slim margin, as a pair of close-range baskets from McLean opened a 50-56 lead. Madrid replied with 7 straight points, but Milan was quick to stop the slide, and through Raduljica and Dragic restored the lead, holding 69-73 after three quarters. Hickman’s triple made it 74-79 early in the fourth, but Simon got in foul trouble which Madrid used to put together a 7-0 run, capped by a Llull three-pointer to make it 81-79. The hosts never trailed again, but the game was tied at 85-85 with 2 minutes left. Then Llull drove for a layup, Ayon was lucky to be in the right place after a favorable bounce on the next trip down the floor to score an easy layup, before Doncic made a steal and raced down the floor for a big dunk, sealing the win with 37 seconds to go.

"Very difficult win indeed. The way we played first three quarters has made the last quarter more brilliant. It was an intense week, since one ne week ago we played in Kaunas, Valencia, Bamberg, and today against Milan. We had some physical problems. In certain moments we were not calm, on offense and on probably defense. We are team which is capable of finding offensive solutions. We scored 94 points, but in the first half they had high percentage of two-point field goals. In the second half we did much better. Match was tight, however, I am happy because it is a team win. I want to stress importance of every player in a difficult schedule. Rudy suffered some problems in the back. We tried to recover him, but it would be nonsense to force him to play given that he was not ok. I hope he can recover quickly."

"It is a very important win. Every game at home is difficult and every game in EuroLeague is important. In the first half we did not have control, they scored too easy. We improved in the second half, but they already had a rhythm and momentum of the game, so it was hard to turn it round. But I think guys coming off the bench did a great job, Hunter, Draper, everybody gave us important things. It was difficult because we could not find rhythm offensively. If you look at the stats, our difference in index rating is very high for the kind of difference in the score. I am happy because Milan is a tough competitor and it is an important victory for us."

REPESA, JASMIN
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"When you play against Real Madrid if you don’t stop transition game, which we suffered in second half, and if you don’t control offensive rebound, where we suffered entire game, you cannot expect to win. I am sad because every win is very important for us in this period. We played pretty good, but did not win the game, and for us at this moment, that is the most important. We are playing much better in the last period compared to two months ago when we had many problems. Now we practice better and we look much better on the court, but on this level you cannot make as many mistakes as we made tonight. I cannot be satisfied because we lost the game, even though it is against Real Madrid. But comparing last two or three weeks to two months ago, we are looking a lot more like a team on the court."

"I always think that you have to get better every day and work hard to get where I want. In the end, if you work hard, everything can happen. (On a late dunk on Raduljica) On a situation like that, being up by four points, you don't think much and go straight to the rim. I am working a lot on my outside shot and it is going well - I want to keep on working on that. I always say we have to work hard but also rest very well."
CARROLL, JAYCEE
Real Madrid
"It was a tough game, especially becase it took us a while to understand the intensity that we needed. Also, they played well and passed the ball really well. We had a good defensive streak in the second half which allowed us to score at the other end. They played tough defense. Milan is a physical team and big players who used their bodies on defense."
SIMON, KRUNOSLAV
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"We played a solid game and came up short against a great team. In order to win in Madrid you must be perfect. We were very close to be perfect. But we are improving every day so there's no reason to give up."
