De Colo leads CSKA to road win in Barcelona

In an entertaining battle with more than 30 lead changes and ties, CSKA Moscow went on the road to beat FC Barcelona Lassa 76-84 on Friday. Nikita Kurbanov contributed 17 points in victory. Meanwhile, Barcelona lost its second straight game and dropped to an 11-9 record in the sixth place. Victor Calver scored 17 points and Kevin Seraphin added 14 for the hosts.

Barcelona replied with a dunk from Claver and a three-pointer from Pau Ribas to tie 13-13. The teams traded blows the rest of the quarter, staying tied 20-20 when it was over. A triple from Kyle Kuric gave Barcelona a 25-23 advantage early in the second quarter. Kyle Hines had a three-point play, but Seraphin scored 6 points in 3 minutes to keep the hosts with a slim advantage. CSKA regained a 34-35 lead after a pair of threes by De Colo, but the lead would change six more times before the half. De Colo's third shot from the arc gave CSKA a 41-44 lead at the break. Back-to-back threes from Claver and Kevin Pangos got Barcelona back ahead after halftime. Claver's 7 points in an 8-0 run opened a 59-50 margin for Barcelona midway through the third quarter. De Colo snapped the run with his fifth triple and then CSKA scored the final 10 points of the quarter as he and Hines assured CSKA a 61-63 edge after three quarters. The counterpunching continued early in the fourth quarter, before De Colo's seventh three-pointer followed by Kurbanov's second pushed CSKA in the clear at 68-73. Rodriguez nailed one jumper and missed another, but Clyburn slammed it back to open a 69-77 gap with 1:37 to go. Kurbanov hit another triple with 60 seconds to go, and then a runner from Rodriguez made sure the victory would go back to Russia.

Game-changing moment

Barcelona seemed to be taking control, jumping out to its largest lead of the night, 59-50, but CSKA replied with a 2-13 run, which included 2 three-pointers by De Colo, to end the third quarter and take 61-63 lead into the fourth. The visitors never trailed again.

"It was game like we knew it would be – a close, physical game. Both teams fought until the end of the game. This game showed that in basketball, you should make simple things to win the game. We didn't make our open shots 3 minutes before the end of the game, we missed open shots four times in a row and Kurbanov hit a three-pointer. With 3 minutes to go, everything is possible in basketball but psychologically, it was very tough for us, missing three open shots and a shot by Kuric after an offensive rebound. We didn't make those shots, they took the defensive rebound and found Kurbanov in the corner for the three-point shot. We can analyze everything but in a game like this, it is necessary to make your free throws, in a close game like tonight's game. If you don't make open shots in crucial moments of the game and miss 9 free throws, it is very difficult to control the game until the end."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I would like to obviously congratulate my team for the win, the fight and the spirit we had. We played against a great team with a big motivation. I think that, overall, the game was very attractive for basketball fans. We have controlled most of the game. Obviously, they came on strong in the third quarter and hit some big shots at the end of the shot clock and that gave them a boost, and also played some good defenses. We had some unforced errors, but the most important thing – and you could see it in my players' eyes – was that we kept our composure. We have kept our trust between us and in the plan, defensively and offensively. We executed great things. Definitely, I am happy about the way we came back on track and beat a team that has big ambitions, quality, size and were playing at home. That talks a lot about how my players responded and I congratulate them once again for that."

CLAVER, VICTOR
FC Barcelona Lassa
"I hit some open shots and that allowed me to get some confidence. I usually play well against Russian teams; I don't know if it is because I played there. In the end, that is the least important thing. If your team doesn't win and you cannot help your team win, everything else is secondary."
HANGA, ADAM
FC Barcelona Lassa
"In a couple of games, everything can change because the competition is so close and the rivals are so close to each other. If you lose two, three games in a row you can find yourself out of the playoffs, so that is why every win is important and every game is really important, especially in this mid-season. We have to go step by step and always want to focus on the next game."
DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"They have a great team and we knew it was going to be tough to play here today, but that's it, we played good."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
CSKA Moscow
"It was a great game. I think that we played very solid. We are working really hard to get to the point of playing easier, but it is a big win here in Barcelona."
