PAOK Thessaloniki edged Alba Fehervar 68-64 and climbed to second place in Group F with a 5-2 record. The loss left the Hungarian champs at the bottom of the table at 1-6. Mark Payne and Giorgios Bogris led the winners with 12 points each and Michalis Tsairelis added 11 points. Braydon Hobbs of Alba Fehervar led all scorers with 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown, Ramone Moore added 12 and Norbert Toth 10.

Moore’s layup put Alba in from 8-10, before Bogris’s short jumper made it 17-16 for the home team as the first quarter finished. Evangelos Margaritis from downtown capped a 10-2 run for a 27-18 PAOK advantage. Moore made it 27-22 by posting 4 points in a row, but a three-pointer from Georgios Dedas gave a comfortable 35-22 margin to the hosts. DJ Cooper’s three-point-play and Maurice Kemp’s layup established a score of 40-29 at halftime. Zoltan Supola’s three-pointer helped the visitors get as close as 44-35. A Tsairelis layup gave again a double figure cushion to PAOK, 46-35, but Hobbs from long distance brought Alba to 46-40. Payne hit a jumper from mid-range for a 52-42 lead and a Supola free throw fixed the score at 52-45 after three quarters. The home team kept a safe margin in the first part of the last quarter, going up 60-49 with a Kostas Charalmpidis jumper, then back-to-back three pointers by Hobbs allowed to Alba to get to 60-55 with three minutes left in the game. Bogris dunked and Kemp also made a huge jam for a 65-62 lead. Then Hobbs’s layup made it 66-64 and Charalampidis sealed the win by nailing his 2 free throws with 3 seconds left on the game clock.

Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We are happy to get an important victory that we needed to move ahead. However, we probably thought that having won the first game in Hungary, this game should be easy enough, which it wasn't given the situation my team has been in following the recent Greek League game. We did not play well, especially in the second half, when we lost our concentration and allowed the opponent to press us and force mistakes on our part, mistakes that are unforgivable from players with the level of experience our team has. We need to work on this, work on the way we address the problems in the games, if we want to be successful to the end."
FRADE, CARLOS
Alba Fehervar
"Congratulations to PAOK, they are the better team and deserved to win. You cannot play with such low levels of energy when playing on the road and that is unforgivable on our part, we definitely need to learn to compete and learn faster than we seem to be doing. Hopefully we'll be better in the remaining games."

BOGRIS, GEORGIOS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"It was a very important victory. We faced a lot of problems during the game, but what counts is that we won against a team that caused us many problems tonight as well as in the first game in Hungary. By now we are practically competing against two teams to seal qualification, we have two very difficult games ahead of us, but we believe in ourselves and that we'll be able to make the Last 32, which is our first goal for the season."
HOBBS, BRAYDON
Alba Fehervar
"We made a very bad start in the game and it cost us. We fought for 30 minutes, but we practically missed the first quarter, so we were trailing the whole game and it's very hard when you always try to come back. This has been actually happening from the beginning of the season, and although our coach has been constantly pointing this out, we don't seem to learn soon enough and correct this kind of attitude. Beating any team at this level on the road is very hard, especially trying to beat PAOK in their home court. We were better in almost all statistical categories except for turnovers and assists and I believe if could flip that we could have changed the history of this particular game. PAOK is a very good team, with very good players and they are almost qualified after this victory."
