CSKA snaps Real's win streak at 13

CSKA Moscow returned home to the Russian capital and held Real Madrid to its lowest-scoring output in nearly a decade in a 60-55 victory on Tuesday night at Megasport Arena. Mike James scored 19 points to lead CSKA as it improved to 13-6, which could be tied for third place by the end of the round. Darrun Hilliard added 14 points and Kyle Hines had 10, including 6 in the fourth quarter to lead the final push. Trey Thompkins led all Real scorers with 14 points and Facu Camapzzo added 11 points and 5 assists. The loss snapped Real's 13-game winning streak and dropped it to second place with a 15-4 record.

Thompkins got the visitors off to a promising start with the game's first 5 points. Thompkins added a tip-in to make it 4-10 before CSKA called timeout. Johannes Voigtmann struck from downtown for the hosts, however, Real got triples from Fabien Causeur and Camapzzo to extend the lead. James drew CSKA within 14-18, but a baseline jumper by Thompkins gave him 9 points and Real a 14-21 lead after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Felipe Reyes gave Real a double-digit lead and gave the rebounding king 3,000 career points. Hilliard heated up for the hosts, but Real had an answer for each score. Free throws by Nikita Kurbanov and Hilliard trimmed the deficit to 26-33 at the end of a low-scoring second quarter.

Nearly 4 minutes passed before James scored the first basket of the second half – and sank the free throw that came with it – to bring CSKA within 2. James's next bucket was a triple that gave CSKA its first lead and Sant-Roos added his first points for a 36-33 advantage. Thompkins ended Real's scoring drought with a three-point play and soon restored a Real edge. The score remained close after that as Campazzo and Hilliard traded threes to end the third quarter at 43-43. Jordan Mickey opened the fourth quarter with a three for Real, but Joel Bolomboy's put-back gave CSKA a 47-46 lead. The seesaw continued with Jeffery Taylor draining a three – the 100th of his career – and James a floater with the lead changing hands on each. Hines shined with a pair of dunks, but Nicolas Laprovittola's jumper kept Real on CSKA's heels at 53-52 with 4 minutes to play. James added a tough basket, but also committed his fourth foul. Campazzo missed a three that would have given the visitors the lead and Hilliard drained a triple at the other end that gave CSKA a two-possession lead with 37.6 seconds remaining. Hines iced the game from the line.

Game-changing sequence

It was a 1-point game heading into the final minute when Facu Camapzzo launched a three-pointer that would have given Real the lead if it went in. The shot missed and on the counterattack, Darrun Hilliard knocked down a triple that made it a two-possession game, 58-54, with 37.6 seconds remaining and CSKA held on the rest of the way.

Mr. 3,000

Just over 2 minutes into the second quarter Felipe Reyes of Real Madrid achieved a new milestone in his legendary Turkish Airlines EuroLeague career by becoming just the fifth player to reach 3,000 points in competition history. Playing in just his second game this season due to injury, the 39-year-old big man stepped out and hit his first points of the season from three-point distance to top the milestone. His tally now stands at 3,001 points in 347 career games.

Did you notice?

With 19.5 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, new CSKA signing Howard Sant-Roos made history when he took the floor and became the first Cuban player to compete in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Sant-Roos played nearly 22 minutes and finished with 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. His biggest impact came with his stellar defense.

Real's low numbers

CSKA forced Real into one of its worst offensive games in recent memory. The 55 points scored were the fewest by Los Blancos since it was held to 49 by Spirou Charleroi in November 2010. Its 10 two-pointers made tied for the second-fewest since the turn of the century. Real’s 17 turnovers were its second-most this season.

What's next?

Real Madrid will remain in Moscow and look to get back on track on Thursday when it visits Khimki Moscow Region. CSKA will suit up on Friday for a showdown with KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz.

CSKA Moscow
"We didn't play the best basketball, but the circumstances were asking for something different. And I gave a big congratulations to my squad, to my team. The players managed to change the ship from the slow start in the first quarter and to keep good what we did in the second quarter when we kept them really low, 12 points. But low productivity from such a talented and aggressive team is saying that we also have other ways to win the game. I'm very happy for my team and for my players. It's a marathon, but we won against a great team. I already give all the credit to Real Madrid for what they're doing all these years, not only this year, in general the consistency they show as an organization and as a club. But I think that we also show consistency, a lot of consistency, and we need to be proud. We are building character right now and I would say this is a win of character in capital letters. The applause and recognition has to go to my players."
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to CSKA. We started the game really solid, we did not have too many mistakes in the first half. We suffered a little bit at the end of the half, with a bonus. They went to the free-throw line, scored 8 points from the free-throw line that helped them stay in the game. In the second half, we lost our rhythm, that is the most important thing I am missing from my team today. I think defensively, in general, we did a good job, but offensively we were a little bit out of rhythm. We lost the ball too much, we were not finding good decisions. We know how difficult it is to win here and give CSKA credit, they stayed in the game and won. We know each other pretty well, it is normal. I think maybe it was not a great game for spectators, because fans love an open game, with 100 or 110 points, but it was a great game of basketball in other aspects of the game – defensively, effort. We are talking about two very good teams fighting for a good position in the playoffs. Against CSKA it's always a big game. Maybe it was not the prettiest one, but a big game. It is a shame for us that we were close to getting a victory, but credit to CSKA for staying in it and playing hard until the end and trying to get a victory like they did. And for us, don't put our heads down and keep on working." 23:05

CSKA Moscow
"It was incredible, above all for starting like this against a team like Real Madrid. To be the first Cuban to play in the EuroLeague, I had the opportunity and I'm proud. I've been here three or four days, looking for a house, adjusting to the cold – it's too cold here in Russia! – but my teammates helped me a lot, everyone received me well. I am here to help the team in all I can. When they put me out there, that's what I was about. Without a doubt, on defense is where I get my advantage and that's where my basketball begins."
CSKA Moscow
"First of all, it felt good to be back in Moscow after such a long time and play in front of our fans at Megasport. We just grinded it out; it was a Final-Four-style game. We just found a way to win. Hats off to my teammates. Hats off to the coaching staff for us just to find a way to win."
CSKA Moscow
"I didn't have the best game. I kind of missed a lot of shots, a lot of open things. But I think that was just kind of the roll of the game, it was two teams that are used to scoring a lot and we didn’t really score, I mean a lot of people missed shots, a lot of people missed open things. In the second half we turned it up a notch and had a really good third quarter and it took us all the way. Every time we play [Real Madrid] it's tough and I'm just glad we got the win."
Real Madrid
"I am happy to be back, but obviously, I am not happy with the loss. I believe that small details decided this game; it is usually that way against such big opponents on the road. We have another game here in Moscow in 48 hours so we have to carry on. We are working well and practicing strong. We had a good winning streak until now. It is a shame that it finished today, but we knew this was a tough game that went down to small details, like I said: a missed shot, a turnover. In the end, they got the win and we have to move on. We have to rest and prepare the game on Thursday. We know it is tough to win on the road in the EuroLeague, but we will try to play a good game and take another victory to Madrid."
