San Emeterio leads Valencia to road win

Valencia Basket grabbed its third road win of the season by downing Khimki Moscow Region 75-84 at Arena Mytishchi in the Russian capital on Tuesday. Valencia improved to 9-10 in the standings while Khimki dropped to 8-11. Fernando San Emeterio led the winners with 18 points, Aaron Doornekamp added 13, Louis Labeyrie 11 and Joan Sastre had 10 for Valencia. Alexey Shved paced Khimki with 18 points and Anthony Gill added 12. After free throws by Shved tied it at 75-75 with 3:36 left, Khimki did not score while San Emeterio, Maurice Ndour and Alberto Abalde fueled a 0-9 run that sent Valencia to a good-as-gold road victory.

Janis Timma got Khimki going with a layup that Doornekamp bettered with back-to-back three-pointers. Jonas Jerebko and San Emeterio joined the three-point shootout before Sastre scored in penetration for a 5-11 Valencia lead. Ndour capped a 0-7 run with a turnaround jumper. Devin Booker and Shved rallied Khimki within 10-13. Doornekamp fired in his third triple and Labeyrie scored in the low post to set a 10-18 Valencia lead. Sastre hit a floater and San Emeterio struck twice from beyond the arc to make it a double-digit game, 14-26. Sastre also connected from downtown, but Shved, Janis Timma and Gill brought Khimki closer, 23-29, after 10 minutes. Brock Motum scored down low early in the second quarter only to see Stefan Jovic do better with a three-pointer, igniting a 7-0 run that Sergey Karasev capped with a jumper for a 30-31 Khimki deficit. Motum and Karasev each struck from downtown, then Jeremy Evans took over with a reverse alley-oop dunk that gave the visitors their first lead, 35-34. Abalde stepped up with a put-back layup and Labeyrie scored around the basket for a 37-38 Valencia lead. Gill hit a pair of triples, but Labeyrie kept Valencia within 43-42. Evans dunked again and Shved added a driving layup for a 47-44 Khimki lead at halftime.

San Emeterio hit a jumper soon after the break, but Gill immediately matched that with a running hook. San Emeterio found Sam Vam Rossom for a three-pointer and connected with Ndour for a huge slam, igniting a 0-7 run that Sastre capped with a corner triple. San Emeterio kept pushing Valencia with a driving layup, but he didn't find much help. Zaytsev and Gill each dunked, starting an 11-0 run that Evans capped with a turnaround jumper. Abalde rescued Valencia with a put-back layup and Quino Colom added a driving basket that tied it at 62-62. Labeyrie put Valencia ahead, 62-63, after 30 minutes. Timma buried a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and Jerebko added a layup for a 67-63 Khimki lead. Labeyrie scored down low, igniting a 0-6 run in which Jordan Loyd gave Valencia a 67-69 edge with over 6 minutes left. Shved beat the shot clock with a corner triple and Jovic added a layup-plus-foul that gave Khimki fresh air at 73-69. Abalde banked in a running shot and got help from San Emeterio and Doornekamp to put Valencia back in charge, 73-75, with over 3 minutes remaining. San Emeterio buried a critical three-pointer and Ndour added an alley-oop layup-plus-foul that boosted the visitors' lead to 75-81 with 1:19 left. Abalde struck from downtown to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Pivotal performer

He finished with 18 points on 2-of-2 two-point, 4-of-4 three-point and 2-of-2 free-throw shooting plus 1 rebound, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls drawn for a PIR of 25, matching his season-high.

Game-changing moment

The hosts missed their final 5 shots, while Fernando San Emeterio and Alberto Abalde each struck from downtown and Maurice Ndour added a fantastic alley-oop layup-plus-foul that saw Valencia seal the win in style.

Stellar stat

Did you notice?

It was Valencia's first road win against Khimki after six consecutive losses. Five of them came in the EuroCup, including the 2012 championship game, 77-68. Valencia had also once on the road against Khimki in EuroLeague action, 75-70 in the 2017-18 season. Another big chapter in this fantastic sports rivalry was written on this night.

Next game

Both teams return to EuroLeague action later this week. Khimki hosts Real Madrid on Thursday. Valencia visits Zenit St Petersburg, which features former player and 2019 7DAYS EuroCup Finals MVP Will Thomas, on Friday.

"We started with great efficiency, playing very dynamic, but Khimki changed its defense and we had to move our team because of the energy we spent in the first quarter was high. They changed the defense and we had problems because they stopped our offense too many times. We knew that in this game, it is important to be focused for 40 minutes or more and that we had to search for our good moments. We found these good moments and punished them in the key moments of the game to get the win."

Aurimas Jasilionis

Khimki assistant coach

"Congratulations to Valencia for the win. We must play much harder and more much aggressive on defense. We were also struggling on the offensive end and we also had to be more aggressive, penetrating and finding the guys inside."

"I think we deserved it. We believe in the win and came here with this in our mind, to win this game. I think we played great on offense and played much better defense in the second half. I think that was the key. I was scoring today, but the good thing about this team is that it was me today, but it can be any player any other day and we don't care about that. We are thinking about the win and this is our good thing."
LABEYRIE, LOUIS
Valencia Basket
"We are very happy. We missed our two big men and it was a really tough, physical game. Their '5's are big and strong, but we played well, we played together. We played defense together and did a good job. In my opinion, we defended pretty well for three quarters and messed up a little bit in the second quarter. We were super aggressive on Shved, that was the bet of the game and the bet worked."
