De Colo leads CSKA past Buducnost

CSKA Moscow brushed aside Buducnost VOLI Podgorica with a dominant 99-69 home victory on Friday night, gaining its third straight victory to stay secure in third place. The Russian side moved into a double-digit lead in the second quarter and was in front the rest of the way, with the outcome never looking in doubt after a 10-0 spurt in the third. Nando De Colo was the inspiration for CSKA with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists, while Kyle Hines combined 11 points with 7 assists. Daniel Hackett had 17 points in victory and Sergio Rodriguez added 14. Norris Cole top scored for Buducnost with 11 points.

Filip Barovic rolled home the opening basket, but a tough layup and one from Hines sent CSKA ahead. Triples from Cole and De Colo saw the lead swap hands two more times, and another three-point play from Hines plus Hackett free throws made it 17-10. Nikita Kurbanov’s triple completed an 8-0 run, but Coty Clarke responded from the corner. Petar Popovic’s three-pointer kept Buducnost in touch, before Semen Antonov scored the last basket of the opening quarter for a 28-20 lead. Antonov and Popovic traded triples, and Antonov netted again for a double-digit margin. Clarke, Cole and James Bell reduced the deficit, before Sergio Rodriguez steadied CSKA with 5 quick points. Baskets were traded evenly for the next few minutes, including a triple from Bell and a long two from Hackett to make it 52-47 at the break. De Colo and Danilo Nikolic struck from deep early in the second half, as did Nemanja Gordic and Hackett to make it 64-55 midway through the hard-fought third. Free throws from Will Clyburn were followed by another De Colo triple, extending CSKA’s lead to 16 points. A tough jumper from Earl Clark and a fastbreak dunk from Cole pulled Buducnost back to 72-61 at the end of the third. A three-point play and a dunk from Othello Hunter kept CSKA comfortable, and consecutive baskets from Hackett put the outcome beyond doubt. Another pair of baskets from De Colo further extended the gap, and CSKA cruised home as Ivan Ukhov scored his first field goal of the season.

Antonov plays his part

Semen Antonov might not feature in the game highlights but he played a key role in allowing CSKA to establish a strong lead: the forward netted 7 points in the space of 1 minute 24 seconds bridging the end of the first and the start of the second, turning a 6-point lead into a double-digit margin which Buducnost could never recover. Antonov didn’t score again but he had already played his part.

Hines turns provider

Veteran CSKA big man Kyle Hines is well-known as an outstanding rebounder, scorer and defender, but on this occasion he showed another asset by dishing a career-high 7 assists. His previous best of 6 came way back in 2012 for Olympiacos Piraeus against Cedevita Zagreb.

Free throw party for CSKA

This was an extremely physical game featuring a huge number of free throws: CSKA had 20 foul shots in the first half alone, and ended up going 31-of-37 from the line – the joint-third highest number of free throw attempts taken by any team this season.

Rebounding boosts hosts

The home side played hard and outrebounded Buducnost by nearly two to one, gaining a total of 40 boards compared to just 24 for the visitors. 11 different players grabbed rebounds for CSKA, and seven of them had at least 3.

Next round

CSKA faces a big-time match-up next week with a home game against Real Madrid which could go a long way towards deciding second place. Buducnost returns home to welcome Khimki Moscow Region.

“The second quarter ruined out picture on the defensive end because they had some easy layups directly from our turnovers. Their productivity in the second half was 22 points, and that says something about out effort. We had deflections, body contact, continuous and consistent disruption of their jumpers, and that was the key. It gave us the trigger so we could score some easy points.”

“This competition, for each and every team, is tough. There are no easy wins out there – you’ve got to go and earn it, so I have to congratulate my players. There were also some great personal achievements like Kyle getting 7 assists, Nando a personal best PIR of 38, and Ivan Ukhov scoring his first field goal in EuroLeague.”

REPESA, JASMIN
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
“Congratulations to CSKA for a victory they completely deserved. I apologise to our fans for how we played the last quarter. I understand it’s tough to play here but there is no excuse. We completely stopped playing and lost focus on our job. We stopped giving the necessary energy. To win a game here you have to be focussed and aggressive on both sides of the court. Today we took two steps back and I hope in the future we will be much more focussed, concentrated and connected.”

Players

DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
“I’m feeling good, we played a great game tonight. The first half we didn’t play like we had to, but we reacted in the second half. We played better defense and got more rhythm on offense. For sure [there was some revenge], in the first game we got surprised [by Buducnost] and we knew tonight we had to play against a good team.”
HACKETT, DANIEL
CSKA Moscow
“I gotta give credit to my teammates, they got me in good rhythm to make shots. But the win is important, not personal agendas. It’s a good win against a team we lost to in the first round, we wanted to come out and take this game. We’re working on defense, we had some moments of blackout but overall it was a good performance on defense. If we do that, especially on our home court, we’re tough to beat. We’ve got to keep working.”
