CSKA Moscow hammered Gescrap BB 98-71

CSKA Moscow sent a message that echoed all around the competition by thrashing Gescrap BB 98-71 in Game 1 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague playoffs in the Russian capital on Wednesday. CSKA took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series and hosts Game 2 on Friday. Nenad Krstic paced six CSKA scorers in double figures with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Alexey Shved added 15 and Jamont Gordon 14, while Milos Teodosic, Anrdey Kirilenko and Viktor Khryapa each accounted for 11 points. Kostas Vasiliadis paced Bilbao with 15 points and Alex Mumbru added 14. An 0-11 run that Vasiliadis capped with a three-pointer gave Gescrap a 15-18 lead midway through the first quarter. Khryapa and Teodosic stepped up to put CSKA back ahead, 27-26, after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Janis Blums allowed Gescrap to tie the game for the last time, 31-31. CSKA improved its defense and a dunk by Andrey Vorontsevich made it a double-digit game, 50-40, at halftime. Teodosic and Shved took over after the break, as CSKA boosted its margin to 84-51 after 30 minutes and cruised to a big home win.

Krstic got CSKA going with a dunk and a reverse layup by Ramunas Siskauskas gave his team a 4-0 lead after just 23 seconds. Vasiliadis struck from downtown but a tip-in by Kirilenko and a layup by Krstic boosted the hosts' lead to 8-3. Krstic kept pacing CSKA with free throws, which Aaron Jackson erased with a put-back basket. Khryapa stepped up with a four-meter jumper and Siskauskas bettered Mumbru's close basket with a triple, good for a 15-7 CSKA lead. Axel Hervelle scored around the basket and an alley-oop slam by D'or Fischer brought Gescrap within 15-11. Vasiliadis made foul shots and a baseline jumper by Fischer tied the game at 15-15. A corner three-pointer by Vasiliadis completed the guests' comeback, 15-18, after a 0-11 run. Krstic made free throws, but Jackson matched those with a jumper. Khryapa hit a triple, split free throws and buried a jumper to tie it at 23-23. Shved dunked off a steal, but Vasiliadis buried a seven-meter bomb to put Gescrap back ahead, 25-26. A wild driving layup by Teodosic gave CSKA a 27-26 at the end of an outstanding first quarter.

Kirilenko sent the crowd to its feet with a driving layup and fed Sasha Kaun for an easy basket that boosted the hosts' lead to 31-26. Marko Banic buried his trademark baseline jumper, however, a three-pointer by Blums caused Coach Jonas Kazlauskas to call timeout at 31-31. Jamont Gordon made free throws and after Dimitrios Mavroeidis scored around the basket, a corner triple by Kirilenko gave CSKA a 36-33 edge. Gordon joined the three-point shootout to force Gescrap to call timeout at 39-33. Raul Lopez struck from downtown before Kirilenko and Banic traded tip-ins for a 41-38 score. Vorontsevich hit a three-pointer and a fast break dunk by Kirilenko set the crowd on fire at 46-38, as Gescrap kept struggling to score late in the first half. Hervelle tried to change things with a layup, but Shved made free throws and found Vorontsevich for a wild two-handed dunk that gave CSKA its first double-digit lead, 50-40, at halftime.

Banic scored around the basket right after the break, but Khryapa immediately answered from downtown and fed Krstic for a dunk that made it a 13-point game, 55-42. CSKA kept circulating the ball well, as Kirilenko found Krstic for another uncontested slam. Teodosic struck from downtown and even after Mavroeidis stepped up with a layup, CSKA kept finding open shots against the guests' zone defense. A red-hot Teodosic buried consecutive threes to break the game open, 68-44. Mumbru tried to change things with a corner triple, but a dunk by Krstic and free throws by Siskauskas gave the hosts a 72-47 lead. Krstic nailed a wide-open shot that Vasiliadis matched with a fast break layup. Shved took over with an alley-oop slam and beat the shot clock with a fall-away jumper for a 78-50 CSKA margin. Gordon nailed a jumper off the dribble and an outstanding Shved sealed the outcome, 84-51, at the end of the third quarter.

Gordon hit a jumper early in the fourth quarter and a three-pointer by Shved made it a 38-point game. Gescrap kept trying, however, as Mumbru shined with an acrobatic fast break basket and Fischer dunked in transition for a 89-55 deficit. Banic took over with a layup-plus-foul in a 0-9 run that Mumbru capped with another layup, 89-60. Gordon and Jackson traded three-pointers, as CSKA had started to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Everything was said and done, so CSKA opted to sit out its main players in the final minutes en route to an impressive win.

"In the end, I am happy with the way we played. I can’t say that we played bad in the first half. The opponents were good, they were scoring on some tough shots, they were moving fast, they set very tough screens. I told to the players that Bilbao is a strong, experienced team, which deserved to be in the Euroleague quarterfinals. We found our mutual understanding in the third quarter, especially on defense. And our offense was ignited by defense. I think the third quarter decided the outcome. At the same time we should not relax. The difference is not important. You can rest your players in this kind of situations, you can keep your secrets – I think that’s what their coach did. We have our secrets and I don’t want to say in details what I did not like about the game. Everyone remembers last year series between Olympiacos and Montepaschi, where the Italians won the series after losing Game 1 by almost 50 points. We will continue our preparations tomorrow. We will watch the video and practice."

"The third quarter was wonderful for them and disastrous for us. There is nothing you can do when CSKA is at that level. We didn't have a strong attitude after the break and allowed open shots against a team like CSKA that will hit them all. We have to learn from this game how we have to play for all 40 minutes. We have to fight hard on Friday. I am a bit sad because this is a series that we can enjoy and compete in if we play the right way. We have to be mentally strong when things go wrong. CSKA has a lot of talent, shooters and frontcourt power, players that can punish you right away. We have to watch the game the next couple of days and analyze it."

"The first half was difficult, but after it we started to pull away, the difference grew to 20, 30 points, so we had a chance to relax in the end. The third quarter was close to perfect. But in the first and second we also played good, but we made some mistakes on defense, the opponents scored several tough shots, shooting over our hands from eight meters and they punished us with fast breaks."

"The final minutes of the first half were the key, when CSKA got its first important lead. CSKA rolled in the second half. They never stop and when you collapse, they carry on rolling. It doesn't matter if you lose this game by 1 point, 30 or 50. Each game is different and we will see what happens on Friday. The first half was balanced, even though they got a 10-point lead at the break, and then they were too strong in the second half. Every turnover turned into a dunk. We knew what we came here for - to try to win one game. We will try to do that on Friday."
