Khimik Yuzhne made its Eurocup debut one to remember by routing Aykon TED Ankara Kolejliler 60-84 in the Turkish capital. Khimik led by just 3 at halftime, but slowly built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and put the game away with a run of 17 unanswered points over the final seven-and-a-half minutes. Romeo Travis tallied 19 points, Jamal Shuler made 4 of 6 three-pointers en route to 14 points, Paul Delaney recorded 15 points and 5 assists, while Artem Pustovyi hauled in 11 rebounds for the winners, who outrebounded Ankara 32-42. Vladimir Golubovic carried Ankara with 23 points and 10 boards.

Jamal Shuler opened the scoring for Khimik, but the hosts responded with back-to-back Golubovic buckets followed by a Caner Erdeniz triple. A Delaney triple later brought Khimik within 1, but Golubovic put Ankara up 15-10 midway through the opening quarter. Khimik responded with three quick baskets to move in front 15-16 on Matt Gatens’s jumper. A Gatens three boosted the visitors lead before a Vanja Plisnic free throw left it at 18-19 lead through 10 minutes. Fouled shooting a three-pointer, Gatens tacked on 3 more from the line and Delaney free throws made it 19-27 several minutes into the second quarter. Ankara answered, but A Shuler triple kept the visitors in front. Golubovic converted a basket-plus-foul in the final minute to trim the gap to 3, but A Stanislav Zavadskyi’s layp put Khimki up 34-37 at halftime.

Travis carried Khimik early in the third quarter before Delaney came through for a three-point play to give his team its first double-digit lead, 38-48. Golubovic and Plisnic cut the deficit and Clay Tucker brought Ankara within 49-54 midway through the quarter, but Oleksandr Riabchuk netted his second three to restore a comfortable margin, 50-60. Kristaps Valters made it a 5-point game once more before Vitaliy Kovalenko ended the quarter with Khimik leading 55-62. Shuler opened the fourth quarter with a three and after the teams traded shots, another Shuler triple made it 60-73. Khimik kept the pressure on as Delaney and Travis scored to fuel a run of 17 unanswered points to put the game away with time to spare.

Aykon TED Ankara Kolejliler
"We lost to a team who are experienced in European competition. Our performance was not good enough from the beginning of the match, and we got into foul trouble. Our defense fell apart in the second half. No one except Golubovic was effective. However, there is a long way ahead of us. We play four out of next five games away, and this is very important."

"I want to thank my players for fighting very well. We knew our opponents were very good, and we got ready for them. They have quality players. But I think we were effective both defensively and offensively."
