Strong finish lifts Panathinaikos over Bayern

In an exciting game that had just about everything, Panathinaikos OPAP Athens used a huge 21-2 run to race past visiting FC Bayern Munich 98-83 on Wednesday night in the Greek capital. Panathinaikos improved to 11-8, while Bayern lost its fifth straight game to drop to 6-13 on the season. The game was a rollercoaster ride; Panathinaikos opened it with a 19-2 lead only for Bayern to erase it before halftime and go up 61-70 in the third quarter. However, DeShaun Thomas came up huge inside and on offensive rebounds, carrying Panathinaikos in a 21-2 run which first restored the hosts' lead and then allowed them to pull away for good. Thomas finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds, including 7 on the offensive glass. Ioannis Papapetrou collected 13 points and 9 rebounds, Tyrese Rice had 12 points and Nick Calathes finished with 11 points and 12 assists. Jacob Wiley and Dinos Mitoglou also scored 11 points apiece in a victory. Greg Monroe collected 17 points plus 9 rebounds for the visitors, Thomas Bray netted 14 in his debut, Petteri Koponen scored 12, Josh Huestis had 11 and Paul Zipser 10 points for Bayern, which knocked down 15 triples, but none in the fourth quarter.

Calathes got the Panathinaikos offense humming from the start, feeding Mitoglou and Georgios Papagiannis for highlight-reel plays. Papapetrou and Mitoglou hit triples that had the hosts on a 12-0 run, before Wesley Johnson's three helped open a 19-2 lead. Bayern needed almost 6 minutes to hit its first field goal, a Bray triple, which also sparked a 0-7 run. Huestis also connected from long range for the visitors, helping cut the deficit to single digits, 24-16 late in the first quarter. The hosts led 28-18 after 10 minutes. Bayern's charge continued in the second quarter with threes from Koponen, Zipser and Bray to get within 37-35. Monroe's three-point play got the visitors within 39-38, but Ben Bentil and Wiley kept Panathinaikos in front. However, Bray hit another shot from long range as did Danilo Barthel, before Koponen hit back-to-back threes to put Bayern up 51-53 with 23 seconds left in the half. The teams were tied at 53-53 at halftime.

Bayern got even hotter after the break. Zipser, Maodo Lo, Bray and eventually Huestis twice connected from downtown without a single miss to open a 61-70 lead. The Greens kept taking it inside to cut into the deficit before Calathes hit a triple and Thomas scored a three-point play to give the hosts a 76-75 edge going into the final quarter. Monroe opened the scoring from mid-range in the fourth, but baskets were few and far between. Rice had a driving layup, Thomas was big under the offensive glass and fastbreak baskets from Calathes and Papapetrou capped a 21-2 run that opened an 89-77 lead. Bayern was held without a basket for more than 6 minutes before Monroe's driving dunk, but there was no time for another comeback as Panathinaikos celebrated victory.

Monster start, monster response

Panathinaikos needed the opening 5 minutes and 25 seconds to build a 19-2 lead, but in the final 14 minutes of the half, Bayern hit 9 three-pointers to go up 51-53. The visitors hit 6 more in the third and take 61-70 lead, only for Panathinaikos to take over once again and over more than 9 minutes spanning third and fourth quarter use a 21-2 run to restore the lead and secure victory.

Threes and offensive boards

Bayern hit 9 of 18 triples in the first half and then proceeded to hit its first 6 attempts from three-point land in the third quarter. However, the German champs shot 0 for 6 in the fourth to finish 15 for 30 for the night. Panathinaikos stayed in the game thanks to its dominance on the offensive glass, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds and outrebounding the visitors 43-23.

Calathes milestones

Nick Calathes needed 1 assist to catch Thomas Huertel for fourth place all-time and he got it on the first basket of the game. Calathes finished with 12 for the night and now has 1,184 for his career. He also reached the 2,000 point milestone in this game with 11 points and his double-double was the 37th of his career, which is one shy of second-most of all-time.

First impression

Bayern guard Tomas Bray made his debut after missing the start of the season with a foot injury suffered in late August. He was the main facilitator of Bayern's comeback, netting 4 of 8 triples, and finished with 14 points and 5 assists.

Next up

Both teams will be in action again on Friday when in Round 20 Panathinaikos welcomes Zalgiris Kaunas, while Bayern will stay in Greece to visit Olympiacos Piraeus.

"I think I have enjoyed this game as much as any game here because it is all desire that came up with the victory. That, and Papagiannis. Unbelievable play. He just took over the game, his defensively was brilliant, brilliant rebounding the basketball in only 18 minutes of play. I am really proud of him. I told him yesterday he is going to get 5 bocks and 12 rebounds, and he let me down with only 4 blocks and 5 rebounds. But if he would have played normal minutes, he would have had a career night. I said at halftime, three key turnovers got them back in the game, but any time you allow 50% from the three-point line, you are going to lose the game. But our rebounding was so spectacular, our defense in the fourth quarter, holding them to 8 points, was so spectacular. And the correlation, Papagiannis played the first quarter and played the last quarter. He was able to play Monroe, he did brilliant things out there. Took the ball off the rim in a key moment, had a key rebound in the game, kept the ball live on the offensive glass and tipped it back to players. Just the best game he had here and I hope it now propels him to a new level."
FC Bayern Munich
"Congratulation to Panathinaikos for a win tonight, especially in the last quarter they made a big difference. I think the final score is not realistic, the difference seen on the court for most of the minutes. But we need to analyze, especially the last quarter, try to improve. The game was decided by the rebounds, Panathinaikos 20 more rebounds and 20 offensive rebounds. And they scored 22 points after rebounds. If you want to compete at this level and win the game, there is no way you are going to win allowing these numbers. The other problem was protecting the paint and defending their game in the post. Those are things we need to work on to improve our game and get close to winning a game. The important, positive thing was the way we recovered after a bad start to the game and the model of the game we had in the second and third quarter is a model we are looking for, but for the entire 40 minutes. It was great and the team made one big step forward looking at that segment of the game. We had a short rotation, we miss some guys, but all the guys in the rotation need to give the effort to keep a good performance until the end. I am absolutely satisfied with Thomas Bray, he even played over the limit, he is coming off a long period without basketball. The way he approached the game and the way he played the game, it is amazing that it is his first game after a long period. I think it is a good impulse for him and for the team in a way he is going to help us the rest of the season."

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"We did not play consistent on defense for 40 minutes. We started the game good, but Bayern obviously started to make some shots, we have to give them credit for that, but we have to focus on our team and what we can do better. To be more consistent for 40 minutes. Maybe today we got the win, but other days we might pay for it and lose the game. I think when we play good defense we get energy, we run a fast break. I think we are a really good team on a fast break. Obviously we got a lot of offensive talent, we can score a lot of points, but we got to stop them first and then get on the fast break."
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"The key was we locked down defensively. My aggressiveness is always to help the team out. I have been playing like that my whole career. I have to appreciate teammates for giving me the ball in the right spot, but the key was locking down defensively and we got down in transition and got easy buckets. I got a knack for the ball, especially for the offensive rebounding. That is one of my specialties, going to the offensive glass. I got a rhythm to do that. I started this game and I hope I can continue to do that."
