Galatasaray downs Barcelona for its first road win

Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul recorded its first road win of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season by downing FC Barcelona Lassa 62-69 at Palau Blaugrana on Friday. Galatasaray improved to 7-15, while Barcelona dropped to 8-14. Alex Tyus paced the winners with 19 points and 9 rebounds, Blake Schilb added 16 points and Jon Diebler scored 14 on 4-of-4 three-point shooting for Galatasaray. Sasha Vezenkov led Barcelona with 18 points, Petteri Koponen added 15, Stratos Perperoglou grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and Ante Tomic had 11 boards for the hosts. Barcelona missed its first 15 three-point shots, but its hustle – 9 offensive rebounds, 4 steals – and an outstanding Vezenkov, with 10 points before the break, allowed the hosts to keep a 28-26 edge at halftime. However Galatasaray stayed close, was perfect from the free throw line and relied on an outstanding Diebler to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Tibor Pleiss got Galatasaray going with a put-back jump hook, but Vezenkov and Tomic combined for all the points in a 9-0 run that put Barcelona in charge, 9-2. Vladimir Micov and Austin Daye nailed consecutive jumpers and Schilb scored around the basket, but Vezenkov and Tomic kept the hosts ahead, 14-8. Perperoglou and Victor Claver split free throws and a jumper by Micov fixed the score at 16-10 after 10 minutes. Tyus took over with a layup-plus-foul early in the second quarter and a tip-in by Schilb made it a 1-point game after a 0-7 run. Tomic dunked and Diebler struck from downtown; both teams had combined for 19 three-point shots missed before he hit the game's first triple. Tyus followed a dunk with a power layup to put Galatasaray back ahead, 20-22. A dunk by Vezenkov and back-to-back three-pointers by Koponen helped Barcelona regain a 28-26 edge at halftime. Vezenkov and Koponen each struck from downtown right after the break. A red-hot Koponen soon added a jumper for a 36-28 Barcelona advantage. Schilb made free throws and Tyus followed a layup with a dunk to keep Galatasaray close, 41-35. Bruno Fitipaldo found his first points and back-to-back triples by Diebler and Schilb prompted Barcelona to call timeout at 45-43. Juan Carlos Navarro buried one from downtown and Xavier Munford added a fast break layup, but a big basket by Fitipaldo kept Galatasaray within 50-45 after 30 minutes. Free throws by Tyus and a three-pointer by Diebler tied it at 50-50 early in the fourth quarter. A dunk by Tyus soon gave Galatasaray a 52-54 edge with seven minutes left. Schilb buried an off-balance jumper and Micov scored down low to keep Galatasaray in front, 57-58, with over three minutes remaining. Tyus scored again and Diebler dunked for a 59-64 Galatasaray edge in the next-to-last minute. Diebler sealed the outcome with a corner three-pointer, as Barcelona never recovered.

"It was a very tough night for us. We realized that this EuroLeague is very tough for us. We played with a lot of pressure today. It was obvious from the first half, missing open shots, 5 free throw attempts and a lot of layups. If you see our two-point percentages, lots of those shots were under the basket, missing layups. When we had a chance to finish the game, being up by 8 points, we turned the ball over three times in a row and let them come back into the game. As time goes by, we have no confidence under pressure and give up. It was a very tough night because everybody realized that this EuroLeague is very tough for our team with our circumstances. We need to think a little bit, everybody. One more time, I can say that whatever lineup we have, we need to play together, stick together and play with confidence. We fought really hard until the end, but as I said, the pressure we had cost us this win. We have to keep working together, there is no other way. We have to try to get some wins, try to find some victories, work together and work for Renfroe, Doellman and Oleson to comeback. We have to try every day and from my side, help the players to find confidence again. Right now, they are under a lot of pressure. You overcome this feeling sometimes with a good victory and after that everyone plays better. I am not giving up. I am a fighter. I know that there have been difficult seasons in my job, in my life. I am not this type of coach; I am here to help my players find the confidence they lost."

"Offensively, I think both teams didn't play good basketball tonight. I know that FC Barcelona did not play a good game, but we also missed a lot of easy shots, especially Sinan Guler, Austin Daye and Vlado Micov. Still, we stayed in the game, fought on defense and were successful to lock the paint. On offense, our pick-and-roll offense with Blake Schilb and Alex Tyus allowed us to find the way to score in the last quarter. Jon Diebler made some long distance shots and we won the game. For us, it is important. It is our first road win in the EuroLeague. We don't have a big chance to make it to the playoffs, but we fought tonight and won the game. Diebler made difficult shots, but this is basketball - good shooters like Guler, Micov and Daye missed some. Dieler made some tough shots, but also, his last three-point shot from the corner came after a very well-organized offense. Blake Schilb was the key for us tonight to find the way to attack them."

"It is frustrating. It feels like every game goes this way; we try and try, but in the end, we never get the prize. Of course, it is a bad moment for us. Like you saw, we are playing without confidence, sometimes without knowing what to do on the court. Of course, it is a bad loss, especially at home. We scored 62 points and shot the ball pretty bad today. It is very hard to win the game with this score. It is not the first time; there have been many games in which we scored 60 points. After that, we need to keep our opponent to a lower score. We shot the ball bad today and that's it, we lost the game."
DIEBLER, JON

"It feels good to finally win on the road. I think it was a sloppy game for both teams in the first half. We missed a lot of shots. We hit some big shots towards the end, but I think, overall, our defense was good. Lately, we have been playing better basketball. We lost one against Panathinaikos last week, but we have been playing better. It feels good to get a road win in the EuroLeague, but we have to keep building off this and keep getting better every day. I think it just came down to us getting some stops. I was fortunate enough to get open a couple of times with Blake [Schilb] running the pick-and-roll. Alex [Tyus] and Tibor [Pleiss] did a good job screening, opening the floor for us on the perimeter. I think we did a good job today, especially after not making shots in the first half. We played good defense and that is big."
SCHILB, BLAKE
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"It was about time we won on the road, really. Everybody contributed today. It was 28-26 after the first half, not a pretty game, but I think we played better basketball in the second half, made bigger shot and in the end, we had a lot of pressure to win here. I think they might have felt this. They have a good team; they just have to continue to play, there are still more games in the season. We have to continue to play, too. Diebler hit a couple of big shots, this is what he does. He is an elite shooter in the EuroLeague and we found him today. He knocked them down and also got a dunk!"
