Khimki blows up in fourth quarter to force Game 3

Khimki Moscow Region lives to fight another day in the 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals after pulling away strong to beat visiting Valencia Basket 98-74 on the road Friday in Game 2 of their best-of-three series. Game 3 to decide a semifinalist between these multiple former EuroCup champions will be next Wedneday in Valencia. Alexey Shved neared a triple double for the winners with 17 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds, breaking open the game with a lot of big shots in the fourth quarter, which Khimki won 29-12. Jacob Pullen led Khimki with 18 points while Dmitriy Sokolov was huge with 16, Robbie Hummel added 14 and E.J. Rowland had 10. Joan Sastre was Valencia's top gun with 18 points, while Bojan Dubljevic had 17 and Will Thomas 10.

Dubljevic and Fernando San Emeterio got Valencia off to a 0-4 start before Markel Brown's free throws and assist to Marko Todorovic evened the score. Luke Sikma and Sastre combined on 6 points but Khimki's free throws kept it within 8-10. Sokolov came in and tied it before Hummel gave Khimki its first lead 14-12. Sam Van Rosson got it back for Valencia from downtown, but Sokolov had the last word as Khimki led 18-15 after 10 minutes. Fastbreaks by Shved and Pullen, the latter's three-pointer and the former's feed to Sokolov for a dunk lengthened the difference to 27-20. The big man kept it rolling with a three-point play to make it 30-22. Rowland and Shved kept the hosts safe, the latter with a big reverse slam and a pair of assists at 40-31. Guillem Vives revived Valencia with a swish from downtown but Shved and Sokolov kept pushing the hosts to a 45-41 halftime lead.

Out of the break an exchange of free throws ended with Sastre hitting a go-ahead triple for Valendia at 47-48. But Khimki responded with Hummel from outside and Todorovic inside to re-take a 52-48 advantage. Sokolov and Hummel kept Khimki's momentum on the way to Rowland's fastbreak layup making it 64-57. When Pullen buried a triple, Khimki had its biggest lead of the night, 68-58. Pierre Oriola got a couple baskets back to reduce the difference to 69-62 after 30 minutes. Sokolov opened the fourth quarter with a dunk and from there the hosts gor more and more confidence, as Shved fed Hummel for corner triple to make it 80-66. Shved came along with another pair of long triples and assisted Hummel again as the lead topped 20 points, 92-70 with less than 3 minutes to play and both teams started turning their attention to a series-deciding Game 3 next Wednesday.

"It was only one game and the math was quite simple: if we win, we are alive; if we lose, we are out. I think we have chances. I want to think that everything depends on us. Valencia here in Moscow and Valencia in Spain are very different. They play great at home in front of their fans, and it will be a tough game. But we want to win and will go to Spain with this idea. Sokolov played well tonight, like all the team, especially on defense in the second half. At the same time, we had some problems with defensive rebounds in the second quarter."
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Valencia Basket
"It was a difficult game for us. We were in a good rhythm but Khimki played much better than us. They had more energy and better defense. In the third quarter we did a good job and tied the game. I think Khimki played with more regularity. We had too many ups and downs, problems with defensive rebounds and defending in one-on-one situations. Khimki was better than us. Now the series is tied and we have to be ready for the next game. We have to play with energy. Sokolov played great tonight. He is a big and smart player; we had some problems to defend him, especially close to the basket. We have to be ready to play better defense on him, but against the whole team, as well."

PULLEN, JACOB

"We won, so I can say it was a good game for us. We were focused because we had to win. Now we have to be focused again before going back to Valencia. We played good defense and had good rotation; all the guys were making passes, so we were able to score. It will be tough on the road, but we have to do the same thing on defensive rebounds."
SIKMA, LUKE
Valencia Basket
"I don't think we were as strong defensively as we were in the first game. They started making shots and when they catch fire it's tough to stop them. They scored a lot of points. But there is still another game in Valencia and we'll prepare. Hopefully, our crowd helps us out like always. We'll be ready. We knew Sokolov is a veteran player who brought a physical aspect to them. He gave them a chance tonight and in the first game. This is something we have to deal with. We have to keep doing things and follow our game plan. We have a tough game with Baskonia on Sunday but we still have Monday and Tuesday to rest up."
