CSKA scores season-high, wins fifth straight

CSKA Moscow was without its two top scorers, but registered its highest-scoring game of the season, easing past visiting Herbalife Gran Canaria 107-85 on Thursday night. CSKA improved to 18-5 to remain in second place in the standings, while Gran Canaria dropped to 6-17. CSKA took control early on behind Will Clyburn and Sergio Rodriguez, built a double-digit lead and kept cruising to a big win. Rodriguez paced the winners with 18 points and 8 assists, Clyburn had 17 points and 7 rebounds, while Alec Peters scored 15 with 6 rebounds. Marcus Eriksson and Kim Tillie netted 13 apiece in the losing effort.

Xavi Rabaseda hit a pair of corner triples for the visitors in the early going, but CSKA quickly took control. Clyburn hit a triple before Nikita Kurbanov had a three-point play to spark a 9-0 run that opened an 18-10 lead. Siim-Sander Vene and Tillie each hit a triple to bring Gran Canaria within one possession, but Kyle Hines scored twice from close range to help CSKA to 29-20 at the end of first quarter. He then added another basket inside early in the second to extend the difference to 33-20. Eriksson scored 8 points, including a pair of three-pointers, to get the visitors within 37-30, but Ivan Ukhov fueled a 9-2 run, capped by a triple from Rodriguez for a 46-32 cushion. The teams kept trading baskets and CSKA took a 56-42 lead into halftime. Two triples from Rodriguez and a three-point play from Othello Hunter made it 70-50. Eriksson and Clevin Hannah each hit once from long range for Gran Canaria, but CSKA kept a big lead and a tough jumper from Daniel Hackett extended it to 81-59 late in the third quarter. The hosts cruised the rest of the way, with Ukhov and Joel Bolomboy getting extended minutes and youngsters Andrei Lopatin and Alexander Khomenko making their respective debuts. Tillie and D.J. Strawberry hit from downtown to help get Gran Canaria within 96-81, but never closer than that.

Depleted squads

CSKA scored a season-high 107 points despite playing without the third- and fourth-best scorers in the league, Nando De Colo (14.8 ppg.) and Cory Higgins (14.7 ppg.). Gran Canaria, on the other hand, due to different injuries missed Albert Oliver, Anzejs Pasecniks, Luke Fischer and Eulis Baez, all in addition to the previously injured Luke Nelson and Nikola Radicevic.

Scoring triple-digits against Gran Canaria

This was the third time this season that CSKA scored more than 100 points and the second time against Gran Canaria. In their Round 4 clash, CSKA scored 106.

Stellar stat

CSKA made 34 of 45 two-point shots, or 75.55%, which was the third best shooting percentage in 451 games CSKA has played this century.

Head Coaches

ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"Congratulations to my players. It was obvious we were dominant and we played better, we were a better team tonight and we deserved to win. Our players did a great job with the offensive and defense mindset. Gran Canaria has a lot of talent, they made some plays offensively and hit some shots. They played without Pasceniks and tried to [pick and] pop and I think we solved that issue well. We broke the game when we had to break it. A lot of good things happened, we were very productive, we played solid in transition, but also five-on-five. We had some guys scoring their first baskets and scoring first baskets in the EuroLeague. We are all happy for that."
GARCIA, VICTOR
Herbalife Gran Canaria
"CSKA was scoring with great percentages during the whole game and that led them to a huge win. We were not at the level we had to be on defense to win. We were very good on offense, scoring with good percentages, but we allowed some easy baskets in some situations."

Players

PETERS, ALEC
CSKA Moscow
"No game is ever easy, but we did do a good job the entire game to keep things consistent effort-wise. We did a good job getting in the paint, shooting good percentages inside and doing a really good job against their aggressive defense on the ball screens. That opened up a lot of things for us, and we hit shots."
HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"It is always tough. Gran Canaria is a good opponent. I think we came out very serious, very focused from start to finish. Everybody that played, everybody that stepped on the court tonight was focused and played well, so that was important for us. We wanted to continue our streak, continue to play well, and continue to play together as a team."
CLYBURN, WILL
CSKA Moscow
"We wanted to come out right away and be aggressive, both offensively and defensively. And don't let the game come towards the end of the game and that's what we did today. The biggest thing today was everyone doing their part. We were missing players, everyone had to step up, and that is what we did."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
CSKA Moscow
"It is always tough when we don't have players that are so important for us. But everybody got to step up. It is a long year, a long season, and we know it is a long way to get to the point where we want to be. It was a great game for us, playing at home, getting the win, and we are happy. We were solid from the beginning. We knew they would come more fresh than usual, because they did not have travels in the last two weeks. And they showed it. In the beginning they were very active with a lot of energy. But we were good right from the first minute and we got the win and everybody got to play. That is also important, guys are practicing hard every day and they don't get the minutes. Everybody got the minutes today, and that is good for us."
TILLIE, KIM
Herbalife Gran Canaria
"It was a difficult game because we played against the best team in Europe at home. I think we started the game well with great energy, but later on, we didn’t defend as well. We allowed many easy baskets due to several mistakes that we must avoid with more concentration. Against a great team like CSKA Moscow, you cannot allow these easy baskets."
