A tough battle took place on Wednesday afternoon in Khimki, Russia as Khimki Moscow Region ended up surviving Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem by 85-73. The win lifts Khimki in Group E to a 7-1 record while Hapoel drops to 4-4, but is practically in the Last 32. Paul Davis led the winners with his 22 points and Petteri Koponen and Marko Popovic added 14 apiece. For Hapoel, Artsiom Parakhouski and Yotam Halperin led the way with 19 points each, and Lior Eliyahu added 18.

The start of the game was a constant back and forth from which Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem seemed to come out victorious at the beginning thanks to a 6-13 edge after Artsiom Parakhouski free throws. Marko Popovic soon replied with a three for Khimki Moscow Region, and that seemed to spark a nice run for the hosts as they were soon in command when James Augustine hit a layup for 15-13. Hapoel was far from surprised but it only had time to make it 23-17 after 10 minutes. The second period started with an 8-2 for the hosts and soon the score was up to 31-19. Petteri Koponen buried a three for Khimki to pull away even more by minute 16, 39-23. From that point to the end of the first half, Khimki managed to keep the big cushion despite Hapoel efforts to come back with a 0-6 burst to close the second period, 43-34. The third quarter was rather balanced again. Hapoel tried to take the initiative again to try to keep the momentum, but Khimki held the opponents off. However, the Israeli team kept pummeling until it reached a 5-16 run capped by Yotam Halperin's three for a new Hapoel lead, 56-58 in minute 29. A final 5-0 including a Koponen three left things at 61-58 after 30 minutes. Khimki extended the run to a 9-0 starting the final period, but Parakhouski stopped the bleeding to maintain Hapoel's options. However, a last burst by the hosts with 77-68 sealed the deal as the clock went by and Khimki kept stretching the lead. Free throws by Popovic made it 83-71 in the last minute for a new Khimki win.

"Hapoel is a good team that managed to beat Maccabi Tel Aviv two days ago. So we didn’t expect an easy game that we had today. In the beginning, we had an 18-point lead, but in the third quarter we didn’t manage to maintain this advantage as we thought that the game had been already done. At halftime and before the last quarter, I told my players to be aggressive and play with double energy, and we did in the last minutes. We played good defense and succeeded. Also, we didn’t allow Hapoel to make many offensive rebounds and did only few turnovers. I’m happy for my players, we did a great job."
GREENBERG, BRAD
Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
"Khimki is a very good team. Paul Davis is a factor inside as well as all their three-point shooters. They got depth, a lot of big guys, and it’s an extremely well coached team. We had to play great game here, but we played well at times, but not well enough. We got a lead in the fourth quarter but Khimki made plays to open up the game in the end. I’m really impressed with this team, a good basketball squad, unselfish and well balanced."

Players

POPOVIC, MARKO
Khimki Moscow Region
"Hapoel is an experienced team, and their win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israeli League is a great result for them and speaks of their strength. Today, we showed a team game and played a good match in general, despite slackness at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter we played good defense and eventually won. We play and practice hard every day and try to improve ourselves. We had respect for our opponent that has such great players like Yotam Halperin."
PARAKHOUSKI, ARTSIOM
Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
"It’s always tough to play in Khimki as it’s one of the best teams in Europe with experienced players. We wanted to win, but unfortunately we lost. All of our players try to do their best and we try to play as a team. We had a tough game with Maccabi Tel Aviv and after it we flew out to Moscow and had only one day for preparing for this game. Probably, this factor influenced our performance, but I suppose it wasn’t great disadvantage. I think the reason is the lack of experience. Khimki does not forgive mistakes we did today. My congratulations to Khimki."
