Howard leads Strasbourg past Unics

Strasbourg sent a message that echoed all around the competition by downing last season's Eurocup finalist Unics Kazan 72-61 at home in Group G on Friday. Strasbourg started the Last 32 with a win, denying Unics a happy return to the competition it won back in 2011. Matt Howard paced the winners with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Tadija Dragicevic added 14 points for Strasbourg. Curtis Jerrells led Unics with 13 points, Keith Langford added 10 while Viktor Sanikidze grabbed 10 rebounds for the hosts, which trailed all the way. Unics managed to get within 25-23 early in the second quarter but Paul Lacombe led a 7-0 run which boosted the hosts' lead to 33-23. Strasbourg kept a 45-35 margin at halftime and even when Unics got a bit closer, 49-43, after 30 minutes, a 8-0 run which Dragicevic capped with a three-pointer allowed the hosts to break the game open, 57-43, and add a very important home win.

Bangaly Fofana got Strasbourg going with a dunk and three-pointers by Louis Campbell and Howard gave the hosts an 8-3 lead. Kostas Kaimakoglou and Jerrells tried to change things for Unics but Dragicevic also struck from downtown for a 13-8 score. Langford hit free throws and Sergey Bykov added a layup but Axel Toupane and Howard made the guests call timeout at 18-12. Dragicevic and an outstanding Howard allowed Strasbourg to keep a 23-18 edge after 10 minutes. Petr Gubanov and James White brought Unics within 25-23 early in the second quarter. A 7-0 run which Lacombe capped with a triple, however, made it a double-digit game, 33-23. Sanikidze scored down low and Jerrells added a three-pointer but Jeremy Leloup and an unstoppable Howard kept the hosts way ahead, 40-30. Antoine Diot sank a triple and Howard dunked again but Sanikidze and Anton Ponkrashov kept Unics within 45-35 at halftime. Both teams struggled to score for over 4 minutes after the break until Pavel Antipov hit a three-pointer. Diot made free throws and a layup by Dragicevic boosted Strasbourg's lead to 49-38. A triple by Vadim Panin and a layup by Dmitry Sokolov gave Unics hope, 49-43, at the end of the third quarter. A dunk by Lacombe and three-pointers by Leloup and Dragicevic made Unics call timeout at 57-43. Jerrells tried to change things with back-to-back triples but Leloup answered from downtown and a dunk by Lacombe sealed the outcome, 64-49, midway through the fourth quarter. Nothing changed since that moment, as Strasbourg kept a safe lead and cruised to a well-deserved win.

"We were very aggressive tonight. We knew that playing well is not enough. My players were able to use aggressiveness and discipline to win. Without Ali [Traore] tonight, we found other offensive solutions in attacks... We dominated the game, but I regret that we are not able to keep a larger gap. All the players did a good job when they came on the court. It's a team victory. It's only the first game. Winning is great, but a win away would really be an even better advantage for the purpose of qualification."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"It was a very physical game. Strasbourg played very athletic and very physical. They were able to play more physical in the paint than us. We knew before the game, but we did not answer this aggression. Our defense during the first quarter was not good and we made too many mistakes in the second quarter. We gave them too many easy points. We made adjustments in the third quarter and Strasbourg scored only 4 points. The problem then was our attack that was insufficient. Without Fischer, with Jerrells who returned from injury, and with the departure of Zisis, we are still looking. "

Players

HOWARD, MATT
Strasbourg
"Our defense was very good tonight. I think it was really the key today. We had bad moments in the last weeks offensively. Tonight we played a good first quarter offensively. We know what kind of quality Kazan has and I think we can really be happy with our defense tonight because we stopped a good team. Maybe it’s one of our best game since the beginning of the season. It’s against a big team, so it’s more of a big victory. There is not any favorite in this group. A win on the road will, maybe, be the key. "
