Bayern bests Maccabi, snaps six-game slide

FC Bayern Munich snapped a six-game losing streak and defeated Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv for the first time in the EuroLeague with an 80-68 victory on Thursday night at Audi Dome. Nihad Dedovic scored a season-high 19 points to lead Bayern, Paul Zipser tallied 17 points and 9 rebounds and Greg Monroe collected 9 points and 10 rebounds in lifting the German champs' record to 7-14. Maccabi rallied to within 2 with 3 and a half minutes remaining, but Bayern closed the game on a 12-2 run to secure the victory. Elijah Bryant paced the Israeli champs with 14 points, Aaron Jackson recorded 11 points and 6 assists and Othello Hunter added 10 points and 7 rebounds. The result saw Maccabi fall to fifth place in the standings at 14-7.

Zipser drained a pair of triples as Bayern went ahead early. Then back-to-back threes by Dedovic and free throws by Greg Monroe made it 16-7 midway through the opening quarter. Petteri Koponen connected from behind the arc to make it a double-digit lead. Jake Cohen drilled a three from the corner to revive Maccabi, but Dedovic banked in a shot and Josh Huestis added free throws to make it 23-12 after 10 minutes. Dedovic's 10th point came 1 minute into the second quarter as Bayern continued to add to its lead. Each team only scored twice in the first 5 minutes of the second quarter. Jackson connected from the corner for his first three of the season to make it 27-19, after which Bayern called a timeout. Dedovic came off the bench to jumpstart the stalled Bayern attack, buy a Quincy Acy three trimmed the gap and after the stoppage, Bryant hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 29-29. Zipser nudged Bayern back ahead, 35-33, at the break.

Maccabi's leading scorer, Wilbekin, got his first points of the night with a three-pointer early in the second half. His second three gave Maccabi its first lead since the opening minutes, 39-41. Danilo Barthel stepped up for Bayern and twice tied the score. The teams traded scores and Bayern regained the lead through a T.J. Bray triple, 50-47. Koponen found Leon Radosevic on consecutive possessions for layups to keep Bayern ahead. However, Jackson kept Maccabi close with a layup and a steal that led to a Tyler Dorsey layup. Koponen lifted Bayern to 57-53 with a three to end the third quarter. Zipser free throws and a long jumper by Bray extended the Bayern lead to 9 early in the fourth quarter. Jackson connected from deep to get Maccabi going, but a three by Maodo Lo kept Bayern cruising at 66-58 with 6 minutes remaining. However, a quick three by Wilbekin and a put-back-plus-foul by Hunter got the visitors within 3. Dedovic hit a three with 2:32 remaining that gave Bayern a commanding 74-66 advantage and prompted a Maccabi timeout. Zipser's triple with 1:05 to go wrapped up a sweet victory for Bayern.

Pivotal performer

Paul Zipser hit a pair of early three-pointers to get Bayern going and never ceased to be a factor en route to a strong line of 17 points, a career-high 9 rebounds and 2 steals. He did not miss on 3 shots from behind the arc, was 4 of 5 from the foul stripe and added 1 assist and 1 bock. Zipser's performance index rating of 24 was best in the game.

Telling numbers

Bayern outrebounded Maccabi 40-30 and did not allow a second-chance basket until the fourth quarter. The hosts also had an outstanding three-point shooting night, making 10 of 21 shots (47.6%). Paul Zipser (3 for 3), Petteri Koponen (2 for 2) and Nihad Dedovic (3 for 5) led the change in this area.

No Lucic, no problem!

Do-it-all forward Vladimir Lucic had started every game this season and was among Bayern's leaders in most statistical categories, but missed this game after the birth of a daughter. His teammates stepped up in Lucic's place to secure a victory for their comrade as a gift.

What's next?

Both teams will return to EuroLeague action in Round 22 on Thursday, January 30. Maccabi will look to keep its home floor unblemished when it hosts Real Madrid. Bayern will go on the road to challenge AX Armani Exchange Milan.

"I want to congratulate Bayern for the win. They played much better all game and deserved to win. For us it was a bad game. We were not concentrated, we were very late defensively. We missed a lot of 50-50 balls. We gave up a lot of easy points on fastbreak, transition and from rebounds that we said this is something that we need to avoid. Offensively we made bad decisions. We were also slow in our decisions. I think except for maybe in the second period, we played when we played good defense and came back in the game, I think Bayer's performance was better, especially the last 4 minutes. We didn't play smart when we were 4 points behind and we could have done better. We need to learn from this loss and to play much better in the next games."

The season so far for me has been really difficult with bigger or smaller injuries and with our schedule, it's very difficult to recover. Thank God I'm back today without any problems. It's even better that we played an excellent game and we won. It's really difficult when you lose a couple of games in a row, you have that always in the back of your head. But I think this will help us get our confidence back. We have a group of great guys, we play great basketball and we've shown it the last couple of games, but unfortunately for 20 or 30 minutes. "It was a tough game. We started off flat. They got a lot of easy buckets at the start of the game and I think that gave them a rhythm. We fought hard in the second quarter. In the second half we tried to play as hard as we could, but we couldn't catch up. We were playing catch-up the whole game. We let an important one get away from us this game... We got to keep defending our home next week against Real Madrid. This is a game we can learn from. I've been on experienced teams and you need losses like this. A loss like this is better than getting a loss at the end of the road."
