Strasbourg strikes gold on road in Gran Canaria

Strasbourg celebrated its return to the Eurocup by knocking off regular season group winner Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas 76-85 on the road to open Group H on Wednesday. A 6 to 26 run bridging the first two quarters gave Strasbourg control and the visitors led by as much as 57-75 midway through the final quarter. Marcy Collins paced Strasbourg with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Rodrigue Beaubois and Paul Lacombe added 14 points each, Jeremy Leloup had 13 and Romain Duport dropped 12 for the winners. D.J. Seeley had 22 points for Gran Canaria, and was followed by Kevin Pangos with 11 and Alen Omic with 10. Strasbourg's superior shooting - 63% to 51% in two-pointers, 39% to 17% from the arc and 76% to 65% at the free throw line - told the story in the end.

With a three-pointer from Seeley and 4 more points by Xavi Rabaseda, Gran Canaria raced to an 15-5 in under 5 minutes after tipoff as only Beaubois could find the basket for the visitors. Lacombe, Collins and Duport then jumped into the scoring column in a big way, filling a 3-15 run that gave Strasbourg its first lead and continuing until their team was in command, 21-26, after 10 minutes. When Leloup joined the fun with a triple and a put-back to open the second quarter, Strasbourg was up by double digits, 21-31. Seeley steadied the hosts with 7 points in a 10-2 response to make it 31-36 before Leloup popped his second shot from the arc. Pangos and Collins held a three-minute scoring duel before halftime, after which Strasbourg still led 38-43.

Beaubois returned with 2 triples soon after halftime to send Strasbourg ahead by 43-51. Kyle Weems soon restored the visitors' double-digit advantage with 4 points by Collins and triples by Leloup and Louis Campbell boosted to 53-68 after 30 minutes. Another Beaubois strike from downtown supplied a high lead of 18 points, 57-75, which practically held into the last 2 minutes, when a basket by Weems made it 67-83. The lead was safe even as Gran Canaria finished with a 9-2 run to trim the difference, but the victory was flying home with Strasbourg to France.

"The key was the power and quality of their small players. They went inside, with contact and scored again and again. We had many difficulties with this. We have to accept this loss. Against a great team as Strasbourg we must be lucky with our shots, but sometimes, [like today] we aren’t."
COLLET, VINCENT
Strasbourg
"Gran Canaria was unstoppable two weeks ago versus Malaga and two weeks later we played a different team with a lack of confidence. We took advantage of this situation well, because I think we played – except the last two minutes – a good game, but for sure when we were plus 17 points, it’s not the real difference of the two teams. Eight teams came to the Eurocup from the Euroleague and I don’t think these teams are better than Valencia or Gran Canaria. We are not coming here thinking that we are better, especially without Matt Howard. As I said, we took advantage of the situation. I know we didn’t play against the best Herbalife Gran Canaria, but it’s our job to win. It’s a good first step, because it’s a very tough group."

Players

SEELEY, DENNIS
Herbalife Gran Canaria
"Our rotations from the weak side didn't come when their small guys go inside. We have to work on that. We need to go hard and practice with intensity. They played really well and strong physical. They scored from the outside and [Mardy] Collins was the key player."
