Joventut Badalona beat KK Cedvita Zagreb, 61-53, on Tuesday in their Ciutat de L’Hospitalet tournament debut. Trailing for most of the game, Badalona was able to come back behind 20 points by Albert Homs and 14 by Guillem Vives. Cedevita was paced by Filip Bundovic’s 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Luka Saric scored 10 and added 9 boards. Zagreb started strong with aggressive defense and pushing the tempo on offense, and was up by as much as 8 in the first quarter but Joventut was able to claw back to close the period at 17-18, and Toni Gomez converted a triple to start the second quarter and put Joventut on top, 20-18. It wasn’t a sign of thing to come for Badalona, though, as Cedevita put the lid on the defensive end until halftime, only allowing 3 more points to their 12 for the quarter, as they reached the break with a comfortable margin, 30-23. A pretty fast break three point play and layup by Homs put Joventut within reach at 32-34, as Cedevita struggled to adjust to Badalona’s defensive full court press in the third and surrendered the quarter, 17-12, with the game entering the final period at a tight 40-42 advantage for Zagreb. Vives tied the score with a layup to start the fourth and Homs converted a deep triple to give Badalona the lead, as Anton Regal added another for a 49-44 advantage with 6 minutes to play. Joventut was in the driver’s seat and never let up, with Regal and Homs hitting consecutive threes to enter the final two minutes with a definitive, 59-49 cushion that Cedevita was unable to surpass.
