Cedomir Vitkovac - Buducnost Voli - EC12 (photo Bilbao Basket)KK Buducnost Voli picked up its first win of the new Eurocup campaign by downing Lukoil Academic Sofia 75-72 in Podgorica on Wednesday night. Both Buducnost and Lukoil now hold 1-1 record and are in a second-place tie in Group B. The two teams exchanged leads throughout the game, but a 9-0 run in the final four minutes of the game proved to be decisive and secured victory for hosts. Cedomir Vitkovac led the way with 16 points, Vladimir Mihailovic finished with 15. Dusko Bunic scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half and Strahinja Milosevic grabbed 11 rebounds along with 4 points. Mohamed Abukar scored 15 for Lukoil, Darryl Watkins had 14 and Brandon Heath finished with 11 in defeat.

Gerlad Lee put Buducnost in front in the opening minute before the teams started trading baskets in the paint. Watkins scored 6 points for visitors, but Marko Popovic sunk a triple for Buducnost, which used six different scorers on the way to a 21-12 advantage. Lukoil caught up with Abukar hitting 5 of 6 from the foul line, and Todor Stoykov made a driving layup to close the gap to 23-19 after 10 minutes. After a long jumper by Vitkovac early in the second, Stoykov hit twice from downtown to tie the game at 27-27. Veselin Veselinov and Watkins scored inside to cap a 2-12 run that put Lukoil up 27-31. Devin Green hit layup-plus-foul and Watkins scored three times inside, including back-to-back monster dunks to keep visitors in front, but Mihailovic answered with back-to-back driving layups and Nikola Ivanovic beat the buzzer on reverse layup to tie the game at 43-43 at the half.

Green hit a jumper on the first possession of the third quarter, but Bunic strung together 6 points inside and Demarquis Bost hit a floater and a triple to give the hosts a 58-50 advantage. However, Lukoil closed out the third quarter with a 0-8 run that included fastbreak baskets from Brandon Heath and Pavel Marinov to make it 60-60 going into the final quarter. Bunic scored twice inside to start the fourth quarter, but hosts then failed to score for more than five minutes, while Abukar and Tencho Banev put together a 0-8 run. Ivanovic and Mihailovic erased the deficit from the free throw line before Marko Popovic hit a tough baseline floater, making it 70-68. Then the visitors entered an offensive slump, failing to score on four consecutive possessions, and Mihailovic hit a triple with 16.7 seconds that gave hosts a 73-68 advantage. Ivanovic sealed the deal from the free throw line and secured the first win of the season for Buducnost.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"We started well, and have control of the game, but we found our mistakes and inexperience let our opponent back in the game. We managed through good defense and a smart attack to gain an advantage, but we let them back in the game again. In the final stage we still had a calm, had experience from previous matches. We were not good in field goals, but 14 offensive rebounds gave us the confidence to get the win. I am pleased, but I felt psychological pressure because of lost games on our home court this season."
DOKUZOVSKI, MARIN
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"It was an equal match. Both teams had chances to win, but the higher concentration and the desire of the local players were decisive. The game was decided by the 14 offensive rebounds Buducnost players took, which is unacceptable for a team that wants to win. Congratulations to Buducnost on the well-deserved victory and desire. We had good and bad points of the game, and I expect a tough match in the second leg. We have a chance to qualify to the next round. "
