Spartak St. Petersburg remains alive in the race to reach the Last 32 after downing Radnicki Kragujevac 81-68 on Wednesday. Spartak improved to 3-5 in Group H, while Radnicki slipped to 4-4, but was able to keep the important head-to-head tiebreaker against Spartak. Yaroslav Korolev led five Spartak scorers in double figures with 20 points, Donald McGrath added 18 on 4-of-7 three-point shooting plus 7 assists, Steve Burtt Jr. posted 14 points with 7 assists, Andrey Koscheev scored 13 and Jared Homan collected 13 points with 13 rebounds and 4 assists for a performance index rating of 26. Three players scored 14 points each for Radnicki Kragujevac: Nikola Kalinic, Stefan Bircevic and Marko Marinovic, who also distributed 11 assists.

A Kalinic layup gave a 7-12 advantage to Radnicki at the midway point of the first quarter. Korolev’s three-pointer brought the hosts within 12-14 before Homan tied the score at 16-16 with a short jumper as the first quarter finished. McGrath put Spartak in front 20-18, but Bircevic’s easy layup soon gave a 23-27 cushion to the visitors. Burtt tied the game at 27-27 from the foul line, however five points in a row by Bircevic gave a 27-34 advantage to the guests. Koscheev pulled down an offensive board to score and fix the score at 31-36 for Radnicki at halftime. A Sava Lesic mid-range jumper gave a 31-38 margin to open the third quarter, but a 12-0 run with back-to-back threes by Burtt and McGrath put Spartak ahead 45-40. A Dennis Seeley three pointer fueled Radnicki to within 50-48, but Burtt, again from downtown, and Korolev with a layup to finish a fastbreak extended the difference to 58-50 at the end of the third quarter. Homan’s put back gave the first double-digit margin, 66-55, to the home team. A Bircevic triple brought the visitors as close as 68-63. Korolev, with less than three minutes left, made it 72-63. Stefan Balmazovic, from the free throw line, cut the margin to 74-68, but McGrath hit another three to seal a Spartak St. Petersburg victory.

Head Coaches

VETRA, GUNDARS
Spartak Saint Petersburg
"It’s good that we won. Maybe we didn’t play very well, especially in the beginning. Radnicki played zone defense, and we were not ready for this. We had to find solutions during the game. We didn’t do this at the start, but then I think we found the way to get to their basket."
NIKOLIC, MIROSLAV
Radnicki Kragujevac
"We didn’t play on our level tonight. We had problems with our centers. Our best player Yarou left, and we had two young guys Jankovic and Jevtovic in his place. We didn’t score points from this position. We made a lot of bad decisions on defense, we didn’t stop transitions, and we didn’t control offensive rebounds. So, we didn’t do what we agreed to do before the game."

Players

KOROLEV, YAROSLAV
Spartak Saint Petersburg
"The rival played in unusual manner for us. The entire game they played zone defense, and in the beginning we made a lot of turnovers. Then our coaches made changes in our game, we understood how to play, and we used open shoots, made them and everything was ok."
KALINIC, NIKOLA
Radnicki Kragujevac
"We played good in the first half. I don’t know why we stopped to play defense in the second half. We were too soft, we missed many easy shoots. We let Spartak play transition basketball, and that is their best weapon. The terrible second half became the reason why we lost."
