Goudelock, Milan stun Khimki in Moscow

Andrew Goudelock erupted for a season-high 26 points to lead AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan to a 77-86 road win over Khimki Moscow Region at Arena Mytishchi on Thursday night. Milan’s second straight win lifted its record to 9-16, while seventh-placed Khimki dropped to 14-11. Milan surged ahead early and led by 10 points after 10 minutes and at halftime and by 13 early in the third. Alexey Shved led a 16-2 Khimki charge to regain the lead and the first three minutes of the fourth quarter featured five lead changes, after which Goudelock and Curtis Jerrells stepped up and Milan pulled away. Mindaugas Kuzminskas scored 15 points, Jerrells finished with 14 and Vlado Micov and Arturas Gudaitis each collected 8 points and 8 rebounds. The loss spoiled a special night for Shved, who received his trophy as EuroLeague MVP for February prior to the game and then broke the EuroLeague single-season record for three-pointers during the game. Shved finished with 23 points and his 3 triples give him 80 for the season. James Anderson added 14 points and Charles Jenkins had 1 in defeat.

The hosts’ Anderson and visitors’ Goudelock scored the first two baskets for each team. Shved’s record-tying triple tied the game at 9-9 and Anderson pushed Khimki back in front, but Goudelock scored twice in a 0-9 Milan run. Before Milan got too comfortable, Shved and Anderson slashed the deficit, however another Goudelock three-pointer and a pair of tip-ins by Kuzminskas put Milan ahead 18-27 and caused an urgent Khimki timeout. After a Shved layup, Curtis Jerrells beat the first-quarter buzzer for a three and a 20-30 advantage. Goudelock added another wild shot to open the second quarter with Milan up 12, but Khimki slowly battled back through a Marko Todorovic put-back, an Egor Vyaltsav jumper and a Jenkins triple, which capped a 9-0 run to make it 32-34 midway through the quarter. Jenkins remained hot with another three and a pair of free throws to put Khimki ahead 37-36. Goudelock free throws and Andrea Cinciarini's three-pointer restored Milan control and a Dairis Bertans triple made it 39-49 at the break.

A three by Micov at the start of the second half gave Milan its largest lead, 13 points. Shved set up Malcolm Thomas for a slam before nailing a triple that broke the single-season three-pointer record. Shved stayed hot with a four-point play before assisting on a Stefan Markovic three and a Thomas alley-oop. Shved set up Thomas for another score that capped a 16-2 run that gave Khimki a 55-54 lead. Jerrells answered back with a three-pointer, but Anderson connected from downtown too. A monster slam-plus-foul by Anthony Gill put Khimki ahead 62-61 through three quarters. The lead changed hands five times in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Milan surged ahead on jumpers by Goudelock and Jerrells and a basket in the lane by Kuzminskas to make it 68-76. A second-chance basket by Arturas Gudaitis put the visitors up 9 before Shved scored 4 points and Thomas’s steal led to a Stefan Markovic layup-plus-foul to get within 75-78 with a minute and a half to play. But the hosts could not get any closer as Goudelock and Jerrells came up with clutch baskets and Goudelock iced the game from the line.

"I cannot say that what happened today was unexpected. We expected Milan to play without any pressure. They have a lot of offensive talent and if you allow them to play at their rhythm, they can beat you. They can beat any team in Europe if they play this kind of basketball that they played tonight. From our side, we need to approach the game in a completely different way, thinking about, first of all, defense, and playing without pressure because right now, it is so obvious that the team, in must-win games, we are struggling because of our pressure. It is obvious if you think that we missed more than 10 layups under the basket, sometimes without any pressure. At the same time, we made silly fouls when they had the bonus, without any danger to score baskets. In these games, if you miss a lot of layups, you don't foul whenever you must foul and allow the other team, especially players like Goudelock and Jerrells, to shoot so many open shots, you don't deserve to win. Right now, this is a process - we have five games until the end and must try to get as many wins as we can to see if finally we can qualify to the playoffs. As I always say, this is the EuroLeague, and the EuroLeague had great teams and great players. Whenever you are not ready to play the game or have problems, like we had today, missing Honeycutt, Zubkov and Sokolov, [you lose]. Robinson is getting back and now our chemistry looks broken, so it is my responsibility right now to go until the end with players who can execute our plan. It is important not to change the approach, but to go game by game, one game at a time, and finally to see what we do. Congratulations to Milan."

"I think that mentally, from the beginning, we worked hard and shared, building shots the right way, all game long. In the last quarter, we missed two or three easy layups, but led most of the game and I think we deserve this win. For us it is important because in our first game with Khimki at home, we led for 35 minutes and then we lost, so I think we deserved. We keep playing in the EuroLeague; we are a new team that wants to keep working and finish better and better. I think this is a good signal for my players, because they deserved and worked in the right way. They can be happy; they kept working until the end. Mentally, we were in the game. We missed some shots and made some turnovers, but stayed in the right way on defense and were in the game. Khimki has a lot of quality, a lot of top players and it is normal that they can come back, we cannot lead the game with double digits all the way. We had the right face and believed until the end."

"At this point every game in the EuroLeague is important for us. We didn’t start well fighting the entire game. Milano is really talented; they let their guys keep going and it was tough to play for us. Curtis Jerrells and Andrew Goudelock are experienced players who scored. We let this one get away. We have five more games to try to get the right position before the playoffs."
GOUDELOCK, ANDREW
AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan
"We stayed together. When they made runs, everybody stayed together. We kept defending and stayed with the game plan. Everybody was playing for each other, everybody was happy for each other... it was a real team effort tonight, I am proud of the guys. We stayed focused and taking what the defense gave us. I think we did a great job today. We are making strides. We are getting better."
