Down 20, Milan rallies to beat Bayern

AX Armani Exchange Milan came back from a 20-point second-half deficit to defeat FC Bayern Munich 79-78 at home and snap a three-game losing streak. Milan trailed 40-60 midway through the third quarter, but Vladimir Micov sparked a dramatic fight with 16 points, including 4 three-pointers. Nemanja Nedovic scored 13 points, Luis Scola had 10 points and Sergio Rodriguez chipped in 9 points and 10 assists in the win, which improved Milan’s record to 11-11. Danilo Barthel paced Bayern with 18 points, Nihad Dedovic tallied 12 points and Greg Monroe scored 10 points with 6 assists in falling to 7-15 with its 10th loss in 11 road games.

Scola scored the first points of the game with a putback for Milan and Barthel’s three-point play gave Bayern its first lead 3-5. Rodriguez had the game’s first three-pointer and Paul Zipser hit from the outside for Bayern in an 0-7 run to lead 6-12. Scola added 5 more points - including a three-pointer - to keep Milan close, while T.J. Bray and Alex King came off the Bayern bench to drain triples for the visitors to lead 21-26 after 10 minutes. King added 2 more threes early in the second quarter to push the advantage to 23-32. Michael Roll hit a triple at the other end, but Barthel continued his strong game with two more scores as Bayern opened the first double-digit lead at 30-40. The margin was up to 11 points on Zan Sisko’s three-pointer as Bayern’s hot long-range shooting night continued. Milan kept Bayern scoreless the final 2 minutes of the first half and a Keifer Sykes three-pointer made it 38-45 at the break.

Bayern opened the second half with the first 9 points - including a Maodo Lo three-pointer and breakaway layup for a 38-54 cushion. Micov finally got Milan on the board nearly 3 minutes into the third quarter for his first points of the game. Monroe answered with free throws, an assist and layup as the lead grew to 40-60. Milan picked up its game with a 12-3 surge including a Micov three-pointer and a Kaleb Tarczewski three-point play to get within 52-63. The scoreboard read 53-66 after three quarters. Milan kept Bayern’s offense quiet for nearly the first 3 minutes of the fourth quarter and Roll’s triple trimmed it to 58-66. Micov drained a three-pointer too as the deficit went down to 61-68. Another Micov triple cut the gap to 68-70 midway through the final frame and Roll’s next triple made it 71-72. Barthel answered with a basket and Lo split free throws to put Bayern up 71-75, but Micov nailed yet another triple. Dedovic missed a three-pointer but Barthel grabbed the offensive rebound only to turn it over, which Rodriguez assisted for a Tarczewski alley-oop dunk and Milan was up 76-75 with 30 seconds to play. After Zipser split free throws with 20 seconds to play to even the game, Bayern sent Nedovic to the line with 19 seconds remaining and he made both foul shots. Zipser answered with 2 free throws with 9.7 seconds left before Nedovic was again fouled with 6.1 seconds left - making the first but missing the second. Nedovic managed to grab the rebound and Milan picked up the win.

Micov wakes up in second half

Vladimir Micov did not score in the first 22 minutes of the game and then Milan’s star scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter - including 3 three-pointers to help get the win.

Home sweet home

Milan came into the game on a three-game losing streak, but all three of those contests were on the road and Coach Ettore Messina’s team now has a four-game winning streak at Mediolanum Forum, where Milan is 9-2 this season.

Telling numbers

Milan nailed 11 of 29 three-pointers for 37.9 percent while holding Bayern to 7 of 22 triples for 31.8%. Bayern also made 17 of 25 free throws (68.0%). Milan was able to get some easy points, picking up 26 points off turnovers compared to 17 for the visitors.

Next games

Milan will stay at home and face another German team as ALBA Berlin comes to Italy on Tuesday, February 4. Bayern must look to bounce back with another road game; it takes on LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in France the same night.

"It was a big comeback win. The players at one point relaxed a little bit. They were very tight in the beginning of the game and we couldn’t hit a shot. Our defense was not at the level. A couple of shots made us think that we had a chance and the defense got better. We made some good decisions and we made some threes. In this game, if you make threes, that helps a lot. "

"I'm very thankful for our fans because they were supporting us with overall great patience on a very difficult night. We started the game extremely soft defensively. You cannot expect to win when you allow the other team to score 45 points in a half on your court. Instead of having a reaction, we dropped our shoulders and we played more and more scared. Then something happened. I was just honestly hoping for a reaction. I got the reaction and the win, so I go home very happy. It was a big night because when you have a comeback win, it’s always a very important night."

"Congratulations to Milan. They stayed in the game until the last moments. Basketball is a 40-minute game and a game of details, a lot of small details. And in this game with small details, they got the win. We had 6 missed free throws in the fourth quarter, which is important in away games and we had some turnovers at the end to give our opponents a chance to get back into the game and in the end to win the game. I’m proud of my team, the way they played tonight. We need to find good conclusions to this game and I believe that this win we had a chance to get tonight will come back to us in future games." kostic

"We underestimated Bayern Munich. We started very soft. We were terrible and missing shots and not playing defense. We allowed too many easy baskets, too many offensive rebounds and we didn’t stick to our plan. Even in the third quarter, we dropped down the energy instead of the opposite and they went up by 20 points. And then I don’t know, we just showed a different face. We started giving everything - energy on offense and defense and playing much better defense. And on offense, we shot without pressure because there was nothing to lose. We were down by 20 and we managed to win. We deserved this win because it was a very important game. We were missing a lot of players with injuries, but for sure we cannot play like this. The first half I played terrible - missing shots and no energy on defense. Only in the second half did I turn it around and I started playing much better."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
AX Armani Exchange Milan
"We have to start the game better. We didn’t show at the beginning the energy to win the game. But in the second half, it was amazing. The people here were unbelievable. So we are very happy. We know the games in the EuroLeague are tough and we have to protect our home. We did that today. It felt good. We needed it after three tough losses."
