Unicaja Malaga opened its Torneig de Básquet Júnior “Ciutat de L’Hospitalet” slate in style with a convincing 86-67 victory over last season’s NIJT finalist FC Barcelona in Group B action. Bruno Diatta had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Fernando Alonso scored 15 points, Carlos Corts 12 and Enrique Cortes 10 in the win. Ludde Hakanson paced Barcelona with 17 points on 4 three-pointers while Alejandro Mazaira scored 10 points and Marc Garcia collected 6 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Hakanson’s first triple gave Barcelona a 0-4 lead. Malaga responded with the next 7 points and the lead was 16-11 when Barcelona went on a 0-10 run. The advantage was 19-21 after one quarter. Unicaja opened the second quarter with a 13-3 charge to make it 32-24 before two more Hakanson threes cut it back to 2 points. Diatta answered with 10 points in Malaga’s 14-2 surge for a 46-32 advantage, which was 46-34 at the break. Cortes helped Malaga increase the margin to 19 points in the third quarter. Mazaira trimmed the deficit to 63-51 at the end of the third quarter. Malaga scored the first 5 points of the fourth before Barcelona had more one more fight-back, with Mazaira getting it to 70-58 with seven minutes to go. But Jose Alberto Jimenez and Corts answered with threes to end all doubts.
