KK Buducnost booked its spot in the elimination rounds with a 74-63 victory over Benetton Fribourg on Tuesday night in Podgorica, Montenegro. Buducnost is now safe in second place in Group E with a 6-2 record, while Fribourg falls to 3-5. Vladimir Micov was the star for Buducnost with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. The hosts made their move at the start of the second half, as Ivan Maras scored 6 points in a 7-0 run to give his team its first significant advantage 36-28. Nevertheless, Fribourg continued to fight and Marcus Sloan got the visitors within 2 with two minutes to go, but Maras, Micov and Vladimir Dragicevic wrapped up the win for the Montenegrin champs. Buducnost captain Maras scored 16 points, Dragicevic scored 11 and grabbed 6 rebounds. Nikola Otasevic chipped in with 10 points and dished 4 assists. David Pascal-Perrier led the Swiss champion with 17 points and 6 assists, Damon Thornton added 12 points and 8 rebounds and Oliver Vogt scored 10.

The hosts opened game with Zarko Rakocevic’s easy points, but the guests answered with 5 points by David Esterkamp. Buducnost took a 10-9 lead, but Marcus Sloan put Fribourg up 14-15 before the first period ended tied at 15-15. Pascal-Perrier hit from behind the arc to make it 15-18 at the beginning of the second quarter. The hosts tried to equalize three times before a Micov layup put the hosts up 29-28 at halftime. The third quarter was decisive for Buducnost. Like many times before, head coach Dejan Radonjic called for stronger. The result this time was a 14-3 run that helped Buducnost on the road to victory. Still the visitors didn’t give up. Perrier and Tresor Quidome drilled a pair of three-pointers and Thornton and Vogt made layups as part of a 0-10 charge in the first three minutes of fourth quarter. Gordic broke that series with his bomb, but it was not the end of drama. Sloan gave new hope to his team in with two minutes remaining when his free throw made it 61-59. But in the end, Maras, Micov and Dragicevic scored the next 6 points to give Buducnost an 8-point lead with 78 seconds remaining to ensure the victory.

"Even if we didn't have an appropriate level of concentration during all 40 minutes I have to congratulate my players for the decisive victory. It was hard to motivate my players after the first game in Fribourg, which we won. In the first half we were outrebounded but fortunately for us they didn't realize their advantage in offensive rebounds. We waited for the moment when they would fall under our pressure and aggression. And it happened at the beginning of the third quarter. I am worried because we didn't use our big advantage for an easy win for the second game in a row. But a win was all we needed tonight and I am satisfied with that."
LEYROLLES, DAMIEN

"It was a tough game. We lost the first game against Buducnost. To hope to be qualified for second round we needed a victory tonight. But it was difficult. Buducnost is good team with nine players that scored. They played well the pick-and-roll and made difficult situations for us. We tried to answer them on the same way in the last period but it was hard with their big advantage. Furthermore their aggressive defense allowed them a lot of easy points and total control of the game. 39 percent of success from the field is too low if you want to win against a team like Buducnost."

"Tonight it was a very tough game. Buducnost is a very good team. They played very hard in defense in the third quarter and won. Buducnost put a lot of pressure on the court. We tried to pick up in fourth but it was too late."
