Caja Laboral rocks FB Ulker by 20

Caja Laboral Vitoria picked up its second straight Top 16 victory by easing past Fenerbahce Ulker 87-67 to remain in the race to reach the playoffs from Group F in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Tibor Pleiss led the way with 14 points and 6 rebounds for Vitoria, which improved to 6-5 and within one win of second place with three games to play. Andres Nocioni, Maciej Lampe and Fabien Causeue all added 12 points for Caja Laboral with Thomas Heurtel hitting for 11 points in the win. Fenerbahce received 16 points from Bo McCalebb but it was not enough as the Turkish team dropped its fourth game in a row and ninth straight road game to drop to 2-9 in the group. Romain Sato had 15 points and Mike Batiste added 12 points.

First quarter: Causeur sparks early 11-0 Caja Laboral run

Fenerbahce boss Ertugrul Erdogan swapped two spots in the starting lineup with Omer Onan and David Andersen in at tip-off in favor of injured Bojan Bogdanovic and Kaya Peker alongside McCalebb, Sato and Oguz Savas. Caja Laboral coach Zan Tabak made four changes with Causeur the only holdover alongside Omar Cook, Nocioni, Pleiss and Nemanja Bjelica, replacing Milko Bjelica, Fernando San Emeterio, Heurtel and Lampe. Savas opened the scoring for Fenerbahce, but Causeur started tremendously for the hosts, twice feeding Pleiss for dunks before sandwiching lefty jumpers around a triple from the left wing by Cook for a 11-0 answer to lead by nine points. Andersen stopped the run before Causeur hit another basket to make it 13-4. Savas converted two straight scores for Fenerbahce to get the deficit down to five points. Lampe’s three foul shots pushed the advantage to 16-8 before Batiste hit the final score of the quarter as Caja Laboral led 16-10 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Strong Pleiss, three-pointers extend lead

Batiste opened the second quarter with a drive and reverse to make it 16-12. But Fenerbahce could not really solve the Caja Laboral defense and the hosts had five different players score in a 10-2 run to push the lead to 26-14 after David Jelinek’s three-ball. McCalebb scored a layup and Emir Preldzic nailed a three-pointer as Fenerbahce crawled to within 28-19. Pleiss continued his superb night with a putback, a dunk and another inside score while Heurtel and Caseur both scored after steals as Vitoria increased the advantage to 40-20. McCalebb swiped a steal for a breakaway layup but Milko Bjelica nailed a triple and Jelinek watched his half-court heave at the buzzer go in to give Caja Laboral a 46-22 lead at halftime.

Third quarter: Caja Laboral answer mini Fenerbahce run with triple barrage

Nocioni started the second half before McCalebb’s tough score in the lane to make it 48-24. Nocioni answered with a triple and Fenerbahce called a timeout after Nemanja Bjelica threw down a fast break dunk and Emeterio drained a triple from the left corner to increase the lead to 30 points – 56-26. Fenerbahce went on a mini 0-6 run with an Iklan Karaman dunk and then two McCalebb foul shots and an Andersen dunk off an unsportsmanlike foul on Nocioni to pull within 56-32. Sato knocked down the guests’ first triple of the game and Karaman scored inside to trim the deficit to 58-37. But Nocioni and Emeterio came back down to hit back-to-back treys and Milko Bjelica also hit from beyond the stripe just before the buzzer to give Caja Laboral a 67-39 lead after three quarters.

Fourth quarter: Fenerbahce just too far behind to make serious comeback

Batiste again opened a quarter scoring with Preldzic’s free throw making it 67-42. Lampe’s pick-and-roll basket got Caja Laboral on the board in the fourth quarter before Heurtel had time to knock down a jumper and assist a fast break layup for Caseur to push the lead to 73-44. Karaman continued his fine game in the loss with a hook shot and Sato drained a long ball to cut it to 73-49. Lampe’s three point play increased the gap to 78-51, but Fenerbahce wanted to go out on a high note with Batiste nailing a triple and a fastbreak layup before Sato’s three-ball cut the margin to 80-60, resulting in a Caja Laboral timeout. The guests trimmed the deficit to 17 points in the final minute.

"It is a game in which our mentality was the most important thing. It is a tough game because they had nothing to lose and we were fighting for everything. It is true that they came without their best player and that we had beaten them on the road, but we have to respect a team with so many good names. The difference between this game and the one against Besiktas is that Fenerbahce is stronger and that we didn't react well against Besiktas after the break. We did well this time; we were focused and the game was never in danger. Let's hope that we can use this game to keep growing. We played really well on defense for three quarters, but they scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and that's something that bothered me. I am sure Fenerbahce will win more games before the end of the Top 16. They are not playing for big goals, but have enough talent and if someone relaxes against them, Fenerbahce can beat anyone. It is all in our hands. We have three games against tough, strong opponents, but we can still qualify without waiting for other results."

"Honestly, we struggled this season and are far away from our expectations. We have good quality players, but unfortunately, we have big self-confidence problems. We couldn't play together tonight and in the last couple of games. That's why we show up like this, especially in the second quarter - an 18-point difference at this level is too much. We made a lot of turnovers without any reason, inbounding the ball or after getting a rebound when passing the ball. These are very simple mistakes, but unfortunately, because of our self-confidence, they happened. We have to keep fighting and play together. It is hard to do at this time of the season, but we will try to do our best in our last Euroleague games. We are trying to take advantage of this game for the Turkish League. We want to win the last three games to get self-confidence and to trust our system. We can talk about many details and things on the court, but first we have to solve this problem off the court before talking basketball details. Right now, our first job is to get them together as a team one more time, make them play together and enjoy the game. It is really hard for us to do this right now."

"I stole the ball seconds before halftime and saw there was very little time left. I tried to get as close to the basket as possible and when I saw that time was running out, I shot from beyond midcourt and luckily, it went in. We knew that Fenerbahce Ulker did not have chances to advance, but have great players and that made them dangerous. We had a good start, very focused and dominating the game from the very beginning."
CAUSEUR, FABIEN

"We played a really good game. I believe we played a really good first half and everything went well due to a good team effort. We wanted to do more to extend the points difference in case we are tied with Olympiacos or Maccabi at the end of this round, so 20 points is a good margin for us. We have to keep working in this direction."
