Darussafaka blasts Barcelona to remain firmly in playoff hunt

Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul used a mighty second quarter and held on the rest of the way to defeat FC Barcelona Lassa 67-56 on Friday at Volkswagen Arena. After a slow start, the hosts dominated the second quarter 32-9 to take a 21-point halftime lead. Barcelona rallied in the second half to within 7, but Darussafaka held on to improve to 13-13, which is one win behind eighth place. Barcelona fell to 10-16. Will Clyburn scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second quarter to lead the Darussafaka resurgence. Scottie Wilbekin added 11 points and 5 assists, Ante Zizic tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds and Birkan Batuk produced 8 points and 8 rebounds to help the home side outrebound Barcelona 41-31. Stratos Perperoglou scored 9 in the third quarter to help Barcelona come back and finished with 16 and Ante Tomic added 8 points and 9 rebounds in defeat. Barcelona’s 56 points scored was its fourth-lowest in the EuroLeague in club history.

Adrien Moermann opened the scoring for the hosts with a reverse layup before Tyrese Rice and Perperoglou put Barcelona ahead with back-to-back three-pointers. Ante Tomic capped a three-chance Barcelona possession with a bucket that made it 4-11 and prompted a Darussafaka timeout. James Anderson stepped up with a pair of three-pointers to bring the hosts within 11-13 after 10 minutes. Zizic dunked to tie the score and Clyburn scored three times on as many possessions to give Darussafaka a 19-15 lead. The hosts continued to roll with a Batuk three capping a 17-2 run. Wilbekin added a three to establish a double-digit advantage, 27-17, and Clyburn remained hot as the margin continued to grow. Luke Harangody scored 5 quick points to take the margin to 39-19. After a timeout, Marcus Eriksson tried to revive the visitors with a three-pointer, but a Harangody jumper made it 43-22 at the break. Perperoglou hit a jumper to start the second half and Victor Claver added a steal and free throws as Barcelona held Darussafaka scoreless for three and a half minutes. Zizic’s basket-plus-foul got the hosts back on track. However Brad Oleson nailed a three and Rice drove for a layup to trim the deficit to 46-32, at which point Darussafaka called timeout. Despite a Clyburn triple, Barcelona cut the gap even further with Perperoglou sinking a pair of layups and then a three-pointer making it 51-42. A jumper by Wilbekin made it 53-42 at the end of the third quarter, but Barcelona continued to frustrate the home team’s defense and an Alex Renfroe three drew the visitors within 54-47. Batuk came alive with a pair of second-chance buckets, a key defensive rebound and a free throw to put the hosts up 12. Tomic and Rice again made it a 7-point game, but Clyburn and Zizic rescued Darussafaka. Perperoglou continued to produce for the visitors, but they were unable to get any closer and Darussafaka held on to win.

BLATT, DAVID
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Tonight we sold a record number of tickets for the second game in a row. And the fans support really pushed us to a very, very good performance. Obviously our first half tonight was exceptional. And defensively for the entire game we held a very, very talented team to 56 points and that says everything. Second half offensively we didn’t execute well, we didn’t find good solutions. We didn’t make shots, we didn’t make free throws, we turned the ball over. And a lot of our offensive difficulties I take on myself. That’s no small part my responsibility. That means I have to do a better job too. But really a big win, a well-played first half all-around and a well-played game defensively. And we’re happy. "
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It was a tough game like we expected it to be. Obviously our second quarter was a disaster for us. We didn’t make anything good in the second quarter, turned the ball over, made rash decision on offense and gave them opportunities to run in transition, which is a part of the game that they are very good at. Our game plan was to control the rhythm of the game through our patience in offense, in the second quarter we did the complete opposite. We rushed, we turned the ball over. We took some bad decisions. We missed 4 or 5 layups and gave them the opportunity to take this huge difference, which was very important. In the third quarter we overcame this and we somehow played better and in the fourth, but the details decided the game and we were not solid defensively and offensively. For us to win here we need a much better game. "

BATUK, BIRKAN
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"In the last few games we have played well in the first half. However, when we get back from the locker room for the second half, we can not keep the same pace. Today was the same. We had a good difference in the first half. After Barcelona cut back the gap to 7 points, we showed our resistance again. And finally we got a big win against a very good opponent. We still keep a strong playoff chance. It was a very important win to maintain our chance."
CLYBURN, WILL
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"It was a good game for us. As a whole, we came out to defend very well. In the first half offensively we did a great job. But the biggest key was our defense. We held them under 60 points. That was the key to win this game."
ZIZIC, ANTE
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"It was a really tough game for us and a big win, of course. We controlled the game, but Barcelona was always close to us, but in the end, we made a break and won the game. I think rebounds were the most important thing for us in this game. Rebounds gave us a second chance on offense. My teammates were very motivated. We went for every rebound and scored easy points, and this is the reason why we won the game."
