Taylor's free throws keep Bayern perfect

FC Bayern Munich got 2 free throws from Bryce Taylor with 1 second left to grab a 76-78 road victory over Dominion Bilbao Basket in Group G of the Last 32. Those were the only 2 points for the Bayern captain Taylor while Alex Renfroe led the team with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Nihad Djedovic and Deon Thompson both added 12 points as Bayern improved to 3-0 in the group. Dominion BB dropped 1-2 despite Dairis Bertans nailing 6 three-pointers for 27 points. Alex Ruoff had 11 points and Giorgos Bogris added 10 points in the loss.

Clevin Hannah opened the game for the hosts with a three-pointer while Renfroe struck first for Bayern. The guests' first lead came on another Renfroe score to make it 5-6. The lead changed hands on each of the next 3 three-pointers and Raul Lopez put Dominion BB up 15-10. An Alex Suarez three made it a 6-point game and Lopez’s three-point play had the hosts ahead 25-18 after 10 minutes. Lopez continued his strong start with a three-pointer as the advantage hit double digits, 30-20. Bayern kept Dominion BB  scoreless for almost three minutes to climb within 30-27 on a Dusko Savanovic put-back. Dominion BB turned a Savanovic technical foul into 3 points before 2 Paul Zipser free throws made it 33-31. Zipser later answered an Alex Mumbru three-pointer with a triple of his own and Renfroe hit from downtown to put Bayern ahead 40-41 at the break.

Refroe continued his strong game out of the intermission with 2 free throws and a three-pointer after Bertans had tied the game with a triple. Bertans was on target again from long range and Runoff put Dominion BB up 50-48. Dominion BB could not pull away though it led 58-53 following 7 more points from Bertans. Mumbru knocked down another three to push the margin to 61-55 before Bayern closed the quarter with 4 free throws to pull within 63-61. Another Bertans triple extended the gap to 68-63 and the sharpshooter’s next three made it 71-67. Bayern continued to fight back and evened the game at 73-73 on a Djedovic layup – though he missed the bonus free throw with 1:10 left. Djedovic added another layup with 35 seconds remaining to make it 73-75. After Bertans and Thompson both split free throws, Bertans evened the game at 76-76 with 9 seconds left. Taylor put up a shot with 3 seconds left that was blocked by Mumbru, but the Bayern captain grabbed the ball and was awarded 2 free throws with 1.0 seconds left. He buried both to win the game.

Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
Dominion Bilbao Basket
"It's an incredible pride coaching this team. The fans understood today what the team needed. We are on the way to becoming a good team. If we play at this level at home, we can take a lot of joy."
PESIC, SVETISLAV
FC Bayern Munich
"That was a very intensive game. Of course we want to play in transition on offense. But we really could not change the rhythm for more than 30 minutes against a team with four wings. But we realized in the last five minutes how to get it done and made good decisions to get a deserved victory. We also know how we will have to play the difficult return leg against Bilbao next Wednesday at home. "
