CSKA beats Darussafaka, secures home-court advantage in playoffs

CSKA Moscow locked up the home court advantage for the playoffs by downing Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul 95-85 in the Russian capital on Wednesday. CSKA improved to 20-7 and became the first team to secure the home-court advantage in the playoffs, while Darussafaka dropped to 13-14 and remains ninth, two wins outside of the playoffs zone. Milos Teodosic led the winners with 20 points and 10 assists and Nando De Colo and Kyle Hines each had 17 points. De Colo added 8 assists, while Hines pulled down 8 rebounds and only missed one shot. Scottie Wilbekin led Darussafaka with a career-high 26 points on 8-of-9 three-point shooting. His 8 three-point shots is a new EuroLeague season high and a club record. Will Clyburn added 13 points and James Anderson, Furkan Aldemir and Brad Wanamaker each scored 10 for the visitors. Aldemir also collected 10 rebounds.

Hines got CSKA going with a layup and De Colo followed a driving basket with a triple for a 7-3 lead. Luke Harangody stepped up for Darussafaka with a layup and a floater, but De Colo and Teodosic kept CSKA in charge at 12-7. Anderson struck from downtown and back-to-back layups by Clyburn tied it at 14-14. Hines took over with a three-point play, Cory Higgins struck from downtown and a big basket by Teodosic boosted CSKA's lead to 24-19 after 10 minutes. Victor Khryapa dunked and fed Vitaly Fridzon for a jumper that caused Darussafaka to stop the game at 30-21. Wilbekin buried consecutive three-pointers, but Vitaly Fridzon and James Augustine carried CSKA to a 38-28 lead. Aldemir tried to change things for Darussafaka with 5 quick points, but three-pointers by Andrey Vorontsevich and De Colo gave the hosts a 47-35 margin at halftime. Hines scored again and Teodosic hit from beyond the arc for a 14-point CSKA advantage. Anderson rescued the guests with a slam and Clyburn followed a layup with a huge dunk-and-foul over Hines to give Darussafaka hope at 56-45. Hines kept pushing CSKA, but Adrien Moerman and Birkan Batuk brought their team within single digits. Clyburn stayed on fire with a three-point play, Wanamaker downed a pair of jumpers and Wilbekin struck from downtown to make it 68-62 through three quarters. Teodosic hit a triple and fed Augustine for a layup for a 73-62 CSKA lead. De Colo found Nikita Kurbanov and Khryapa for respective open jumpers and soon added a three-pointer that broke the game open, 82-66, with over six minutes left. Nothing changed from that moment, as CSKA kept a safe margin and cruised to an important win.

"I would like to congratulate my team for its accomplishments and an excellent performance; we were the better team on the court. When you manage to beat a team with such a big roster and versatile players - when I say versatile, they do have the quality and size to play small ball, big ball, with a big three man, a big five, a small five, so they have versatile formations. We managed to limit them to 35 points in the first half and led us to a good start, giving us the confidence in our defense. Unfortunately, we lacked mobility in the third quarter; they hit some big shots and scored 27 points. We controlled the game in the fourth quarter and finished the game with almost 30 assists against such a team with big wingspans, big rotations and a lot of switches. My guys found the way to find good passes and make good plays. Having 28 assists was big; Nando and Teo combined for 18. It shows how we respect each other; we play for the guy who is open and try to find the best possible options offensively. We started this new EuroLeague with a lot of hesitations; how to get into it, what is going on, how is it going to look – and three games before the end of the regular season, we qualified with the home-court advantage in the playoffs, which is an achievement. We are not going to stop here. We have to continue playing seriously. Once again, congratulations and I would like to say 'thank you' to our fans. They were very enthusiastic and like our team's performance. I would like to say 'thank you' to them."

"First of all, congratulations to CSKA. We didn't play the first half the way we needed to control a very, very high-scoring, talented offensive team. We defended better in the third quarter, but not well in the fourth quarter, again. We need to try and take that moment in the third quarter, and we missed it. CSKA was the better team today, no question. We can be proud that we beat that team once this season, because it is a great team. We live to fight another day. Today, we didn't get the kind of performance from our big guys, with the exception of Furkan Aldemir, who did a great job, and Luke Harangody, who did well in his minutes. Other than that, we didn't get the kind of performance [from our big guys] we needed to get, but that happens… Milos Teodosic, when he is healthy and in the moment, he is just a terrific guard, at the highest level. There is not a better backcourt that Nando De Colo and Teodosic in Europe, anywhere, than these two guys together. Then they come off the bench with Vitaly [Fridzon], Higgins, Jackson... it never ends. They keep throwing soldiers at you and there is nowhere to hide. But those two guys are the best backcourt combination in Europe, in my mind. And there are some good ones, but not better than these two together."

"It is never easy. I think it was a lot easier with our creators - Milos, Cory, Aaron, Nando, who did very well, creating opportunities for all of us. We had 28 assists, so they did a really, really good job; Victor as well, I consider him as a creator. I think this is the biggest key why we were able to play so well on offense today. Aldemir is a good player. He has a big body and goes to the basket hard. It is tough to box out because he is a good offensive rebounder. It is never easy to play against somebody of his caliber."
WILBEKIN, SCOTTIE
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Tonight against CSKA, we played pretty good in offense. But we let them to put down so many easy shots. What’s more, we had too many turnovers. At the end of the day, we didn’t defend well enough to win this game. About my percentage behind the arc today, I found probably my rhythm back for the first time since I’ve been back after my wrist injury. We just have to put this defeat behind and be ready for Galatasaray on Friday."
