Bayern comes back to beat ALBA in overtime

FC Bayern Munich came back from 16 points down to knock off fellow German side ALBA Berlin 101-95 in overtime at home, extending its winning streak to three games. Bayern was down big in the first quarter and trailed by 13 points with 6 minutes to play, before getting two big late three-pointers to force overtime. In the extra session, ALBA committed three straight turnovers while Bayern executed to improve to 15-9. Jalen Reynolds came off the bench and tallied a career-high 24 points while Wade Baldwin had 21 points and 7 assists, and both Paul Zipser and Vladimir Lucic poured in 20 points. ALBA continues to struggle to find wins, dropping its third straight and sixth in the last seven games for an 8-16 record. Ben Lammers scored a career-high 20 points, Maodo Lo hit 16 points, Marcus Eriksson and Louis Olinde both chipped in 11 points and Luke Sikma picked up a double-double of 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the loss.

Lo started in fine form with a three-pointer, a free throw and another three-pointer for a 0-9 lead. Bayern needed almost 4 minutes to score on Lucic’s free throws. Lammers’ second basket increased the lead to 2-13 before Reynolds hit a jumper for Bayern’s first field goal at the 3:16 minute mark. ALBA did not let up though as Simone Fontecchio, Eriksson and Johannes Thiemann all hit three-pointers as the guests led 10-26 after 10 minutes. Zipser opened the second quarter with a basket before Nick-Weiler-Babb and Zipser both drained three-pointers to go along with a Baldwin three-point play as Bayern trimmed the deficit to 21-31. ALBA continued to score though, with Lammers hitting another basket to make it 23-37. Bayern twice got the margin down to 10 points but Lo both times extended the gap to 13 points, and ALBA went into the locker room ahead 33-43.

Reynolds started the second half with a dunk and two Zipser free throws cut the deficit to six points. Lo’s three-point play made it 37-48 but Bayern continued its run with a Lucic triple and two fastbreaks after ALBA turnovers to pull within 46-48. Lammers remained a problem with two more scores and a Thiemann basket had the guests up 50-57. Lucic countered with a three-point play but Jonas Mattisseck drained a three-pointer for ALBA, which led 58-66 after 30 minutes. ALBA start the fourth quarter strong with Fontecchio’s three-pointer making it 58-71. Zipser hit a triple for Bayern but Fontecchio answered with another long ball of his own. Reynolds remained Bayern’s main weapon with four points to get the score to 65-74, but Olinde hit twice from deep and the cushion was 67-80 with 6 minutes left. Zipser pulled Bayern closer with seven straight points and Baldwin made it 76-80. Fontecchio came up with another big shot but Baldwin knocked down a triple for a three-point game. Bayern could not stop ALBA though, and Lammers’ reverse layup had the guests up 81-86 with 22 seconds left. Lucic countered with a three-pointer and after Eriksson split free throws with 14 seconds left, Baldwin knotted the game 87-87 with a triple from the top of the key with 9.4 seconds to play. Sikma missed on the buzzer and overtime beckoned.

Bayern took its first lead of the game on Reynolds’ opening score of the extra session. Lammers answered at the other end but the host’s momentum continued and DJ Seeley’s corner three-pointer extended the gap to 94-89. It was 94-90 when ALBA seemingly found itself with Olinde hitting a three-pointer and Thiemann hitting free throws to go up 94-95. But Lucic came down at the other end for a three-pointer and then drew an offensive foul on Lo. Lo committed another turnover and Baldwin made free throws to go up 99-95. ALBA committed its third straight turnover and Lucic iced the game with two more free throws.

1,000-point clubs

Maodo Lo started the game hot and notched a career milestone in the process. He scored seven of ALBA’s first nine points, including a free throw for his fourth point of the game and 1,000th point in his EuroLeague career. Lo ended with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists but also 5 turnovers.

“There are some games that can kill you or can give you a huge boost. We were trailing, they were better for 35 minutes. They had more energy, we were heavy, we were unable to put any pressure. Then we condensed our best effort for the last five minutes of the game and the five minutes of overtime. We came back, we made some big plays, we had some stops and this is a game that can really lift us. Today I chose for whatever reason to run a shorter rotation and that helped some players to have more touches and more opportunities to score, but we win and we lose as a team always.”

“We won the second, third and fourth quarters and overtime. The first quarter cost us a lot. We didn’t have the energy to play. But you can see the difference with one more day of rest. We played less than 48 hours ago and we were able to condense our best effort in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime where we made a lot of good plays on defense, big plays on offense and we were able to win a very important and very, very tough game against a very good opponent that shot the ball very well. We had to do really hard work to get back and win the game.”

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
ALBA Berlin
“Congratulations to Bayern for the victory. They played with a lot of intensity in the second half. For us, being in the game was good. Of course it would have been better if we could win. But we made mistakes and they were also good at the end. The main thing is to improve. We want to win more than lose but we must understand that sometimes we have mistakes and the other team has good actions.”

“Exhausted. We really put on a show - both teams. We came out a little sloppy in the first quarter. You can’t do that. But how we came back, and how ALBA came back, and we got it in the end was really impressive by both teams.”
REYNOLDS, JALEN
FC Bayern Munich
“I feel I definitely could have done better. We’re definitely not satisfied, but we feel good getting this win at home. Locking in at the end was a big part of this win. Everybody stepped up and gave their best effort. I tip my hat to ALBA but it feels good to get the win. Coach told us we have to lock in. We can’t let them come into our house and just beat us up.”
