Rodriguez, Hines inspire CSKA to huge win

CSKA Moscow roared back to form with an impressive 81-63 victory over Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens in the Russian capital. After suffering a heavy loss at Real Madrid last week, CSKA clearly felt it had something to prove and came flying out of the blocks with a dominant opening quarter to establish an early double-digit lead. Panathinaikos rarely looked like making it an even contest despite Nando De Colo and James Gist both being ejected, and the hosts underlined their superiority with a powerful fourth-quarter performance to cruise home. Two players were particularly instrumental in the victory, with Sergio Rodriguez combining 25 points – including 5 three-pointers – with 9 assists, while Kyle Hines netted 21 points and grabbed 4 steals, both career highs. K.C. Rivers paced the visitors with 17 points and Chris Singleton added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

CSKA immediately showed it meant business by racing to a 6-0 lead after 90 seconds and before long it was 11-1 with a triple from Rodriguez. Panathinaikos bounced back as Singleton scored 7 points in a 0-10 run to tie the game, but Hines and Rodriguez combined for 10 points in a 12-2 run and the first quarter ended at 27-15 as Hines blocked a shot from Nikos Pappas on the buzzer. The second quarter began with Leo Westermann stepping off the bench to hit a three-pointer and dish 3 assists as CSKA threatened to run wild. De Colo and Gist were both ejected after an altercation led to the pair receiving technical and unsportsmanlike fouls to end their involvement, and the half ended on a high for Panathinaikos with a 1-8 run including triples from Rivers and Matt Lojeski, making it 43-33 at the interval.

The visitors couldn’t get the deficit down any further in the third quarter as baskets were traded evenly, with Hines continuing to steadily contribute for the hosts. Lojeski ended the third quarter as he had ended the second, with a buzzer-beating triple, to briefly make it a single-digit game. But CSKA started the fourth quarter with a 5-0 burst to reassert its dominance, and another pair of triples from Rodriguez increased the advantage to 19 points to kill off any lingering Panathinaikos hopes of a comeback.

“We have seen a totally different picture of our team from our last EuroLeague game. We had a different approach on offense and defense, and holding a great team to 63 points shows that defense was the key.”

“I would like to give my congratulations to my team. Our mindset was crystal clear at both ends, and especially defensively we were focussed, determined and had good communication. We managed to take out a great player and creator, Calathes, and that’s a key point for me. We had the wrong attitude in Madrid, but for sure that game helped us – watching the film and realising where we could play better. Now we have to stay healthy and stay together because we are a new team, but today we found other ways to score without Nando.”

PASCUAL, XAVI
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
“Congratulations to CSKA, it’s very clear they were better tonight. We didn’t start the game as we needed, with seven turnovers in the first quarter. CSKA scored 11 fastbreak points and after that it was very difficult to change the game. In the second and third quarters we fought but after Rodriguez scored a three-pointer in the last quarter the game was over. Now we have to recover for the next game.”

WESTERMANN, LEO

“It was a tough game as always against Panathinaikos but we showed a way better picture than we did in Madrid. We played with a lot of aggression and even though Nando was out of the game we played well and got the win.”
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
CSKA Moscow
“We’re very happy, we played an excellent game and were solid for 40 minutes. After a tough loss in Madrid it’s good to bounce back, now we will keep working because we have an important game on Friday. We’ll be ready to play on Friday – we love playing basketball and for us playing games is enjoyment.”
VOUGIOUKAS, IAN
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
“The first and the last quarter were very bad for us. We couldn’t control the rythm of the game and we had a lot of turnovers. He have to concentrate for the next game against Fenerbahce, which is very important for us.”
