Alex Mumbru - Bilbao Basket - EC13 (photo Bilbao Basket)Alex Mumbru scored a layup with 1.6 remaining for Bilbao Basket to rally past the visiting EWE Baskets Oldenburg 90-84, and sneak into the Last 32 from Group B on Wednesday. Bilbao needed a 5-point victory to advance, and was up 88-84 with 2.7 seconds left, when Dairis Bertans inbounded the ball under Oldenburg’s basket to find Mumbru who scored a layup while being fouled. Mumbru missed the additional free throw on purpose, starting big celebration of both fans and players in Bilbao Arena. Hero Mumbru finished with 22 points in victory, German Gabriel netted 21 with 7 rebounds, while Raul Lopez scored 11 for Bilbao which snapped its five-game losing streak just in time. Julius Jenkins led EWE Baskets with 20 points, Dru Joyce had 18 points and 8 assists, while Nemanja Aleksandrov had 13 points plus 6 rebounds in defeat.

In a do-or-die showdown, the two teams traded leads for 35 minutes. Aleksandrov scored 6 points early for 4-9 lead, but Mumbru sparked a Bilbao run, capped with a triple from Gabriel for 12-9. Joyce nailed a triple and Andrea Crosariol scored twice inside for the visitors, before 5 points from Julius Jenkins made it 16-21. Mumbru from long range and Antanas Kavaliauskas from close range tied it at 21-21 after 10 minutes. Konrad Wysocki hit a triple, and Ricky Paulding had a triple-plus-foul to put the visitors to 29-30, but Bilbao hit perfect 8 of 8 from the foul line. Mumbru and Wysocki traded threes, before Axel Hervelle on a fastbreak and Mumbru with a last second put-back gave Bilbao 46-41 halftime lead. A pair of jumpers from Gabriel, and a triple from Lopez extended it to 53-45 after the break, but Oldenburg replied with a 2-11 run during which Aleksandrov scored a layup and a three-pointer. Triples from Jenkins at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter helped put the visitors up 57-66 early in the final period. But Mumbru sparked a 10-0 run that included triples from Gabriel and Damir Markota. Joyce answered with a three of his own for 67-69, but a basket plus foul from Gabriel and a triple from Bertans capped a 17-2 spurt. Jenkins hit another three-pointer and a jumper, while Jannik Freese had a layup, then later added a layup-plus foul for 83-83 with 61 seconds to go. Markota sank a triple on the ensuing possession, and assisted Mumbru for a layup and 88-83. Joyce split free throws, and Bilbao had possession in the final 16 seconds, down 88-84. Ball went out of bounds with 2.7 seconds left, but it still belong to Bilbao as Bertans inbounded to find Mumbru who scored a layup while being fouled.

"Before I start talking about the game, I want to thank the 'black flood', the 'Miribilla Effect', our sixth man, our fans, for their support and the faith they had until the very last second. I want to congratulate my players because they had faith - down by 9 in the fourth quarter, down by 14 points to qualify, they played great defense and did things right on offense. I also want to congratulate Oldenburg because they had a great game. I think it was a great show for all basketball fans; two teams with very different styles, but the same goal, fighting hard for all 40 minutes. We had a cold start, which allowed Oldenburg, a very talented team, to find easy baskets early in the game. We improved in the second quarter, especially at the end of it. We got steals which led to easy baskets and reached halftime with a 5-point lead. I believe that they played really well in the third quarter, and hurt us a lot in pick-and-roll situations. The key was that we only had 1 turnover in the fourth quarter, also found the way to the basket. We were struggling and when we saw it was a tough situation, we played with more confidence and accuracy, especially from three-point range. Controlling the boards was critical and our faith also paid off. We powered the offensive boards and had a lot of second-chance options."

"Congratulations to Bilbao Basket to winning the game tonight, and advancing. We came here with a goal to protect our 5-point lead from the first game, and also maybe to win. All the fans that came here saw a great game, I think everybody could feel what was at steak here, what both teams were fighting for. I think we played a very god game, only we couldn’t give ourselves a Christmas gift of winning at the end. It came down to the final possession, and we made crucial mistake defending the last inbound play. If you make these kind of mistakes, you lose. I can say I am very happy with the energy we played with today, team basketball we showed on offense. It wasn’t just one player that did all the scoring, that the defense can concentrate on, but everybody participated. We played team basketball on offense. Unfortunately, we could not stop Bilbao from scoring, and time after time we made small mistakes, and gave up overall too many offensive rebounds, and therefore the second chances Bilbao could capitalize on."
