Trabzonspor rallies past Reggio Emilia, gets second win in Group K
Trabzonspor Medical Park rallied from a 14-point deficit to down Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 82-76 at home on Wednesday. Trabzonsport went up to 2-1 in Group K while Reggio Emilia dropped to 2-1. Both teams will meet again in Reggio Emilia next week. Dwight Hardy led the winners with 20 points. Andrija Stipanovic added 16 while Berkan Canday had 12 for Trabzonspor. Amedeo Della Valle led Reggio Emilia with 18 points. Pietro Aradori added 13 while Achille Polonara and Vladimir Veremeenko each had 10 for the guests. Polonara had 5 points in a 0-7 run that gave Reggio Emilia an 8-14 lead. Della Valle and Andrea De Nicolao stepped up for the guests and a layup by Vladimir Golubovic boosted the guests' lead to 17-31 after 10 minutes. Candan had 6 points in an 11-0 run that brought Trabzonspor back to life, 30-34, but Della Valle, Darjus Lavrinovic and Polonara kept Reggio Emilia out of trouble, 39-48, at halftime. Gani Erdi Gulaslan and Alper Saruhan struck from downtown in a 10-0 run that brought Trabzonspor back to life. Stipanovic soon gave the hosts a 61-58 margin after 30 minutes. Hardy led an 11-0 run that sealed the outcome, 74-61, with 4 minutes left. Reggio Emilia managed to cut its deficit a bit before the final buzzer.
Veremeenko got Reggio Emilia going with a layup and a three-pointer by De Nicolao soon gave his team a 2-5 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Derwin Kitchen put Trabzonspor ahead, 6-5. Veremeenko and Candan traded layups but Polonara had 5 points in a 0-7 run that gave the guests an 8-14 lead. Stipanovic shined with a tip-in, De Nicolao downed a jumper and Kitchen kept the hosts within 12-16. Darjus Lavrinovic struck from downtown and a driving layup by Aradori made it a nine-point game, 12-21. Stipanovic scored again and a corner three-pointer by Hardy gave Trabzonspor hope at 17-23. Della Valle took over with a catch-and-shoot triple in transition, Ojars Silins added a fast break dunk and Golubovic scored down low for a 17-31 Reggio Emilia lead after 10 minutes. Sertac Sanli hit a jump hook early in the second quarter that Stefano Gentile bettered with a three-pointer. Candan answered from downtown and Ryan Thompson soon brought Trabzonspor within single digits, 25-34. Candan took over with a layup-plus-foul and Hardy added a driving layup for a 30-34 score. Della Valle rescued Reggio Emilia with free throws and a three-pointer which Veremeenko followed with a layup for a 32-41 lead. Lavrinovic nailed a baseline jumper and Polonara bettered Stipanovic's layup with a three-point play. Silins and Kitchen traded baskets and Hardy buried a big triple to fix the halftime score at 39-48.
Canday split free throws after the break and another layup by Stipanovic gave the hosts hope at 42-48. Veremeenko stepped up with a layup and Aradori added back-to-back baskets to keep Reggio Emilia out of trouble, 44-54. It didn't last long, however, as a three-pointer by Saruhan sparked a 10-0 run which Gulaslan capped with his own bomb from downtown to tie it at 54-54. Aradori scored again but Hardy joined the three-point shootout and Gulaslan gave Trabzonspor at 59-56. Lavrinovic made free throws but another close basket by Stipanovic restored a 61-58 Trabzonspor edge after 30 minutes. Golubovic scored down low early in the fourth quarter and Lavrinovic split free throws, but Reggio Emilia went scoreless for over 4 minutes after that. Meanwhile, a three-point play by Hardy and a bomb from downtown by Saruhan ignited an 11-0 run which Sanli capped with free throws, 74-61, enough to seal the outcome. Both teams started to fight for points differential, a critical issue in all Last 32 groups. Della Valle stepped up with a three-point play and got plenty of help from Aradori and Veremeenko to make Reggio Emilia erased its deficit to 82-76.
