FMP damaged the Koln 99ers’ hopes of reaching the ULEB Cup elimination rounds with a 75-65 victory in Group B Tuesday in new head coach Slobodan Klipa’s first game in charge. FMP improved to 3-6, but cannot advance to the next stage of the competition. Meanwhile Koln dropped to 5-4 and sits in a three-way tie for second in the group with BK Ventspils and Elan Chalon. Koln still has its destiny in its own hands and will move on with a Week 10 home win over Ovarense Aerosoles. Dragan Labovic scored a season-high 21 and Predrag Samardziski added 15 points and 9 rebounds to give the hosts the win in a game full of streaks. Koln led in the opening minutes, but Samardziski scored 11 unanswered points to give FMP the lead for good. The advantage peaked at 18 late in the second period and the hosts settled for a 46-30 lead. Koln had 6-, 10- and 8-point runs in the second half as it threatened to get back in the game, but could never get close enough to cause FMP any serious pressure. Marko Djerasimovic added 12 points and Bojan Krstovic 10 for FMP. Immanuel McElroy led the 99ers with 17 points, captain Aleksandar Nadjfeji came off the bench for 13 and Yassin Idbihi added 10.

After Koln took early 0-3 and 2-5 leads, Samardziski of FMP woke up and scored 11 straight points giving his team an 18-9 lead. The hosts were strong on defense forcing Koln players to miss lot of shots. Samardziski was scary under the boards with 5 rebounds in the opening five minutes. Krstovic joined him with his 7 points and FMP led 25-13. Only Milko Bjelica was in a mood to battle under the boards and he hit twice as the first period ended 25-15 for FMP. After an almost three-minute drought, Koln cut the margin on a Nadjfeji jumper and Bjelica layin. Labovic stepped up with 6 points in a row to restore FMP’s double-digit lead midway through the period. After an 11-3 run, the score was 45-27 and all that Koln managed to do was to cut the gap to 46-30 by halftime. Labovic and Krstovic opened the second half scoring and keeping control. McElroy tried to catch up for the visitors and after his 6 straight points the score was 48-37. Labovic and Djerasimovic together inspired a 9-2 run as FMP went ahead 57-39. The tide turned again as Koln fired back with 10 straight points – half of which came from Nadjfeji – threatening to reopen the game as the score settled at 60-49 after 30 minutes. The last period started with triple from Krstovic and a jumper from Nadjfeji on the other side. FMP was patient in keeping its double-digit lead, but Philipp Schwethelm gave Koln hope with a shot from behind the arc. Idbihi joined him in a 0-8 Koln run forcing new FMP head coach Klipa to call timeout. After a minute’s break, Filip Covic hit an important bomb and the score was 66-57. The 99ers started to miss three-pointers as FMP’s main force, Labovic, fell into foul trouble. But Samardziski replaced him successfully, fighting under the boards with Toby Bailey. Labovic came back and scored a crucial layup with two minutes left. Djerasimovic added points to seal the 75-65 FMP win.

Head Coaches

KLIPA, SLOBODAN
FMP
"I am so glad that we beat Koln in my coaching debut in ULEB Cup competition. But the credit for that win goes to our ex-coach Vlada Vukoicic. I think the only problem with our team was psychological and the change on the bench was efficient."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
Cologne 99ers
"FMP's coach change had good implication to them. The hosts deserved to win. We entered the game with no energy and no rhythm. Koln tried to catch the connection in the third period but FMP threw down our effort and won. Congratulations to them."

Players

LABOVIC, DRAGAN
FMP
"It is obvious that we are able to do big things. I think the key for our win was that we managed to limit Toby Bailey to only 4 points."
BJELICA, MILKO
Cologne 99ers
"Hard game. FMP was highly motivated. We opened the game bad and never were back again."
