Bayern Munich storms back from 14-point halftime deficit to win in Ljubljana

FC Bayern Munich opened the fourth quarter with 19 unanswered points to complete a comeback from a 14-point halftime deficit in beating Union Olimpija Ljubljana 80-90 in the Slovenian capital on Tuesday. Bayern improved to 3-0 in Last 32 Group K, while handing Olimpija its second home loss of this stage. Bayern could clinch a spot in the Eurocup Eighthfinals as soon as next week when it hosts Olimpija in Munich. Big men Vladimir Stimac and John Bryant made the difference for the winners. The former tallied 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting plus 9 rebounds and the latter had 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 11 boards. Heiko Schaffartzik added 12 points and Anton Gavel had 10 for Bayern. Dino Muric paced Olimpija with 14 points, Marko Marinovic scored 13 and Klemen Prepelic totaled 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in defeat.

Bayern scored the first two baskets of the game and Bryant dominated inside, but Olimpija stayed close and Alen Omic’s three-point play tied the score at 13-13. Marko Marinovic’s triple gave the hosts their first lead, 18-15, and Olimpija finished the first quarter on a 7-0 surge –including 3 free throws from Gregor Hrovat – to make it 29-21. Bayern went inside to Stimac successfully early in the second quarter, but threes from Paolo Marinelli, Prepelic and Hrovat gave the hosts a double-digit lead. Omic boosted the difference to 45-29. Though Stimac remained a potent force, Olimpija held on for a 53-39 halftime advantage.

Bryant and Stimac continued to wreak havoc inside, but threes by Marinovic and Muric kept Olimpija comfortable ahead. Bryace Taylor scored 5 straight points to trim the gap to 59-52 midway through the third quarter. Muric restored a double-digit advantage, but a Jan Jagla three helped Bayern stay within striking distance at 64-58 through three quarters. But everything went south for Olimpija in the fourth quarter as Bayern opened with 19 unanswered points. Six different players scored in the Bayern run Prepelic’s basket-plus-foul ended a five-plus-minute scoreless drought, but Stimac quickly restored a double-digit advantage. A Prepelic three and a Hrovat dunk gave Olimpija hope at 78-81 with two minutes remaining. But a Schaffartzik triple and Stimac put-back helped Bayern seal a stunning come-from-behind victory.

"Just one good half is not enough to win against team like FC Bayern Munich. We had a good lead in the first half due to good rebounding and shooting. In the second half, we showed a different face. We were bad in rebounding and our good shooting stopped. We lost selfconfidence, so we stopped playing in the post too. The experienced players of FC Bayern used this against us and made a comeback. We had a chance a few moments before the end of the game, when we were down by 3, to make a comeback, but we did not succeed."

"Once again it was proven that two disciplines in basketball are the most important. Both are key to our game. Philosophers who teach us basketball through internet, I apologize to you. The best results in basketball are made by teams who play defense and rebound well in defense and offense. We won in Bamberg by 38 points and this was not realistic. Union Olimpija scored 53 points on us at the end of the first half time. This is not a crime to be only punished for by going to prison, but for a life sentence! In the second half, they scored 11 points in 15 minutes of the game. This was not realistic either. Union Olimpija has a lot of talent, intensity, dynamics and fighting spirit in the game. They are a great team with a great leadership. I like the way they play, but I will not praise them too much. They play as a team, and players make sacrifices for the team. In the moments when they do not play good, you do not see grumpy faces. Their first boss is the coach and the second one is Marinovic, who is a leader on court. We stopped them well in defense. I think we deserved to win, but we beat a good team. I am sure that this loss will not break them, and I truly believe they can achieve the playoffs of the Adriatic League, which is very important to them. We need to be very careful about them also in Munich, because they are capable of defeating us on our home court. We had a little of luck today, and if my players think that we are a lot better than Union Olimpija, they are mistaken. We played againsta very good team and we escaped with a victory."

"You have to congratulate the entire team. We played great after a disastrous first half. That should now give us even more confidence. "
