Efes cruises in Munich to extend streak

Despite missing league-leading scorer Shane Larkin, Anadolu Efes Istanbul did not miss a beat in downing FC Bayern Munich 63-88 on Friday night at the Audi Dome. Efes, already qualified for the playoffs, improved its winning streak to 10 games and its first-place record to 22-3. Bayern lost its fourth straight to drop to 7-18 on the season, tied for last place. Efes took the lead for good in the first quarter, extended it to double figures in the second, and stretched the margin to 17 points in the third en route to a comfortable victory. Rodrigue Beaubois netted 16 points and Chris Singleton had 14, each knocking down 4 triples, for the winners. Krunoslav Simon added 11 points and Tibor Pleiss 10, while Vasilije Micic combined 9 points with 8 assists. Vladimir Lucic and Maodo Lo each scored 14 for Bayern which missed Petteri Koponen and Nihad Dedovic in its backcourt due to injury.

Bayern had a quick start, with Lucic dunking on a fastbreak and Lo hitting a jumper at 8-2. After a timeout, Efes answered with a quick 0-9 run in which Singleton downed a triple and slammed a fastbreak dunk to put the visitors in front. Beaubois and Danilo Barthel traded shots from downtown before Singleton nailed a second-chance triple as Efes led 17-19 after 10 minutes. Simon and Singleton buried three-point shots early in the second quarter and Sertac Sanli had a three-point play to open a 21-28 Efes advantage. Bayern failed to for almost 5 minutes during which Efes put together another 0-9 charge, capped by a transition triple from Simon at 23-37. Lucic's jumper ended Bayern's drought and set a 25-37 halftime score. Barthel had an alley-oop dunk and Lo a triple that cut the difference to 30-39 at the start of the third quarter, but Singleton and Simon each had a triple in a 0-8 run that opened a 17-point margin, 30-47. Monroe's three-point play and Lo's second-chance triple gave Bayern spark, but Beaubois immediately answered from deep and the teams proceeded to trade baskets. Bugrahan Tuncer's three-pointer stretched the margin to 41-58. Zan Mark Sisko provided energy and 5 points for Bayern, but Beaubois hit a three-pointer late in the third, and Tuncer nailed one to open the fourth for a 49-67 margin. Leon Radosevic and Lucic tried to give Bayern hope, but Efes had a 1-9 run capped by another three from Beaubois to make it 53-76 midway through the fourth quarter as Efes finished the job.

Little runs

Efes used a 0-9 first-quarter run to take 8-11 lead early, then 0-9 run in the second quarter to make it 23-37 just before halftime. A 0-8 run in the third quarter increased the margin to 30-47, and a 1-9 run in the fourth opened a 23-point difference that was ultimately too much for Bayern.

No Larkin, problem

Shane Larkin set the EuroLeague's single-game record with 49 points as Efes won the Round 11 clash between these teams by 29 points. This time, Larkin did not play, but Efes still won by 25. Efes entered the game averaging 87.1 points, 17.5 assists, making 10.9 triples on league-high 41.6% three-point shooting, while making 6.9 steals per game. The visitors improved all those numbers with 88 points, 22 assists, 15 triples on 50% shooting while picking up 10 steals.

Micic runs the show

Efes offense ran smoothly behind Vasilije Micic. Against his former team, he made just 2 of 7 field goals and scored 9 points, but dished 8 assists, drew 6 fouls and did the work on defense with 2 steals in fewer than 25 minutes.

Road warriors

This is 10th win in a row for first-place Efes and its 11th consecutive on the road. It is also the third win in that road streak by 10 or more points.

Next up

Next week in Round 26 both teams will be on the road and in action on Thursday. Bayern travels to face Zenit St Petersburg, while Efes will return to Germany to visit ALBA Berlin.

"Congratulations to Efes for the win. We all know that this is, at the moment, the best team in Europe and they proved that in this game. We tried to play them tough. In the first half, especially in the first quarter, we had very good moments, especially defensively. We did not make open shots, which would be have been good for our confidence. We were solid, but this is one team with high quality, especially shooting quality. Every time we were solid defensively they found the way to take the shot, and make it most of the time. It is a huge difference between them making 15 three-point shots and us making five. That is the first difference if you look at the stats, despite the quality Efes has individually and as a team. Also, we had two injuries that made our rotation very difficult. If you want to confront the best team in Europe, you have to have all the resources. We have to look forward to the next games, stay positive and work with the same approach that we had the last days."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"Of course, I am happy. Before the game, I was saying it will be different for us because we miss our best scorer Shane Larkin, who in the first game against Bayern scored 49 points. But we showed we have a very good team, we play very good basketball. Micic started practicing yesterday after two weeks, but he knows how to play. And we played perfect defense. OK, maybe Bayern this season is not at a high level, but it is not easy to play in this court with this atmosphere. I am also happy that tonight we had around 2,000 Turkish people, and everybody will go home happy because of our victory. It is another road win, I am proud of these players, they are playing fantastic basketball."

Players

LO, MAODO
FC Bayern Munich
"At the half, we were behind by 12 points and had the feeling that we could still do it. However, we didn't come out focused enough to actually do it against this very good team. Now, we really have to fight through to improve as a team."
MICIC, VASILIJE
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It feels great. Today the most important thing for us was to win the game. In the last couple of weeks, we missed some important players, and before the game, we did not know what kind of roster we would have. But our focus is great, which was important because I know the guys on Bayern never give up, and we continued our run."
BEAUBOIS, RODRIGUE
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It was good teamwork, especially defensively, we did a good job. It is very good for the rest of the season. I expect a tough game next week against ALBA. When we played them in the first game, we barely won. Hopefully, we will have some players back, but in any case, we need to be ready for a tough game."
