BCM Gravelines Dunkerque finished second in Group D despite a 86-73 road loss against CAI Zaragoza on Wednesday. Both teams tied for second place in Group D, each with a 6-4 record. An 85-67 home win in regular season Round 5 allowed Gravelines to get the tie-break advantage and finish second. Michael Roll led Zaragoza with 16 points. Damjan Rudez added 12 while Alex Urtasun, who joined the club this week, had 10 for Zaragoza. Steven Gray led Gravelines with 17 points. Yakhouba Diawara added 14 while John Holland and Jonathan Rousselle each had 10 for the guests. Zaragoza hit 13-of-17 shots and collected 5 steals in a near-perfect first quarter in which the hosts cruised to a 34-15 lead. Gravelines got within 47-38 at halftime and took the lead, 62-65, late in the third quarter. Zaragoza improved its defense and a 13-2 run allowed the hosts to seal the outcome, 81-69, it was not enough to beat Gravelines in the final standings.

Gray struck from downtown early in the game. He got help from Ousmane Camara and Holland to give Gravelines a 7-9 lead. Roll and Pere Tomas fueled an 11-1 run which Urtasun capped with a triple for a 18-10 Zaragoza lead. Rudez and Pedro Llompart struck from downtown, Albert Fontet added a three-point play and when Urtasun downed his second shot from beyond the arc, Zaragoza led 34-15 after 10 minutes. Rudez and Urtasun made it a 24-point game, 39-15, early in the second quarter. Holland hit a triple and Juby Johnson added two more in a 4-15 run that brought Gravelines a bit closer, 43-30. Rudez scored down low and a layup by Laszlo Dobos gave Zaragoza a 47-35 edge. Rousselle brought Gravelines within single digits, 47-38, at halftime. Steven Gray and Rousselle shined after the break, allowing Gravelines to tie the game, 49-49. Three-pointers by Jonathan Tabu, Tomas and Joe Jones gave Zaragoza some fresh air, 60-54. It didn't last long, as Gray had 8 points in a 2-11 run that gave Gravelines a 62-65 edge. Free throws by Llompart and a triple by Roll put Zaragoza back ahead, 68-67, after 30 minutes. Viktor Sanikidze followed a triple with a slam and Llompart soon gave Zaragoza a 76-69 edge. Roll soon boosted his team's lead to 81-69 with over 4 minutes left. Diawara and Rousselle allowed Gravelines to finish second despite this loss, as both teams will return to the competition in the Last 32.

Head Coaches

ABOS, JOSE LUIS
CAI Zaragoza
"We had a strong start on offense and especially on defense. They went out with less intensity on defense, because they picked up their fourth team foul with a minute left in the first quarter and I think they committed 4 fouls in the first half. They improved their defensive level in the second quarter and surprised us, but in the end we managed to match their intensity and recovered. I am satisfied because this game helped us to keep our rhythm and we did different things in practice which paid off. You never know what is best. We said we didn't have a strong preference in finishing second or third, as we would be in similar groups. The game would have been different if we were second. We planned this game to give a chance to our younger players, get Urtasun involved and test some things. We didn't win by 18, but it was not one of our mail goals."
MONSCHAU, CHRISTIAN
BCM Gravelines Dunkerque
" It was a good game even where both teams were qualified. We didn't have a good start because we had some injured players, even though some others returned to the team. We are still building the team that we want to become. We needed more time for this, but above all it was a good game in which both teams wanted to win. We made mistakes at the end of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter, but the most important thing is that we managed to keep the lead we had from our home game. I want to congratulate CAI because it had a good regular season. Even though we are not as well as we would like to be physically speaking, I believe we had good second and third quarters."

URTASUN, ALEX
CAI Zaragoza
"It was a good situation for me because there was less intensity than usual; if we had to win to qualify to the next round, I guess it would have been different. It was a good game for me and for some of our younger players. It is a great situation for me to start adapting to the team. For a shooter or just any other, hitting the first shot always gives you positive vibrations. I am a bit disconnected from rosters, teams - I just landed, but I know that our next opponents are great clubs with tradition. The next stage will be more complicated, I am sure."
JOHNSON, JUBY
BCM Gravelines Dunkerque
"We know that it was going to be a tough game against a very good team, especially playing at home. We went out to play tough. It was a difficult road game for us and we needed to play together. We had a slow start, but improved after that. CAI managed to win the game and I wish them all the best, as both teams made it to the next round. I hope both teams can keep fighting in the competition."
