CAI Zaragoza holds off Sassari

CAI Zaragoza moved into a tie for first place in Group N with an 87-75 victory over Dinamo Banco Di Sardegna Sassari on Wednesday. The hosts outrebounded Sassari 44-22, including 17 offensive rebounds, in improving to 2-1 at the midway point of the Last 32. Stevan Jelovac paced the winners with 21 points and Joan Sastre, Viacheslav Kravtsov and Isaac Fotu netted 12 points apiece and Tomas Bellas tallied 10 points and 5 assists. Joe Alexander scored 24 points for Sassari, which dropped to 1-2. Jarvis Varnado amassed 19 points and Rok Stipcevic contributed 12.

MarQuez Haynes scored first for Sassari and Pere Tomas for CAI. Sastre gave the hosts their first lead with a three and Bellas added another that made it 10-7, but a red-hot Alexander kept Sassaro close. Sastre connected again from downtown and Kravtsov put the hosts up 6. The difference was 20-11 after Fotu drained a three and Sastre scored again. Stipcevic and Varnado heated up to bring Sassari within 23-20 after 10 minutes. Robin Benzing kept the hosts on target from behind the arc and Jelovac boosted the lead to 8. Alexander and Haynes clawed the visitors within 30-27, but back-to-back threes by Jelovac and Sastre gave CAI a double-digit lead. Henk Norel’s steal led to a Bellas layup and a 45-30 lead. Jordan Swing became the sixth CAI player to make a three in the first half when he extended the difference to 16. Haynes and David Logan baskets closed the gap, but Nate Linhart gave the home side a 50-36 halftime cushion.

CAI continued to score at a fast pace in the second half. A three by Bellas extended the difference and Norel made it 59-40. An unrelenting Alexander refused to let Sassari lie down. He scored his team’s next 8 points before Matteo Formenti free throws closed the gap to 63-50. But a Jelovac three and Benzing jumper had the difference right back at 18. Varnado split free throws to make it 70-53 through three quarters. Stipcevic opened the fourth with a three, but CAI remained in control. Kravtsov scored from the line on consecutive possessions and Jelovac added a three-pointer for a 78-62 cushion midway through the quarter. Varnado got going and Logan made a triple as the visitors geared up for one final run. Varnado made 3 free throws to get his team as close as 82-73, but CAI made enough free throws in the final minutes to hold on for the win.

Head Coaches

CASADEVALL, ANDREU
CAI Zaragoza
"We played a great first half both in offense and defense, playing well and balanced and always looking for the extra pass. In defense we stole several balls, collapsed spaces and did not give easy shots to keep a 14-point-lead at halftime. We didn’t started badly in the second half, but Banco di Sardegna Sassari increased the pressure and we were not as comfortable on the court as in the first half because when they play small ball they are very dangerous."
CALVANI, MARCO
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We played a very strange game. During the first half we have allowed 50 points and it is impossible to get the win like this. CAI Zaragoza dominated in the paint, outside, in offensive rebounds where they collected 17… That’s too many. The first quarter was good, but second was the worst. After the break we started badly again trying to stop them with a zone that didn’t work. Despite this, our attitude in the second half was different to end with the lowest difference possible in order to bounce back next week in Sassari."

Players

BENZING, ROBIN
CAI Zaragoza
"It was a good game, we did a good job. We defended well because we knew they had a talented offense. We played smart in offense also, kept them playing good. I think it was a well-deserved win by 12 points. I think it's a good difference against a Euroleague team."
HAYNES, MARQUEZ
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"They did a good job and we'll have to put a bit more of energy into it the next time we meet them, that's for sure. If we play with energy from the beginning I think we'll be fine trying to recover the 12 point-loss we suffered here."
