Bayern fights back to beat Maccabi

FC Bayern Munich put together a strong fourth quarter to come back and knock off Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 72-70 at home and get back to its winning ways. Wade Baldwin scored 9 of his team-high 16 points in the final frame and Nick Weiler-Babb decided the game by hitting 2 free throws with 9.3 seconds left to give Bayern a 16-10 record. Jalen Reynolds added 15 points against his former team and Paul Zipser pitched in 10 points for Bayern. Maccabi lost more important ground to the playoff ranks with its third straight defeat to fall to 10-14. Ante Zizic collected 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Maccabi while Scottie Wilbekin had 10 points and 5 assists.

JaJuan Johnson opened the scoring and Vladimir Lucic made it 4-0 early. Maccabi needed more than 2 minutes before Zizic finally scored for the guests, who then went on a 0-11 run including a Dragan Bender triple to go up 4-11. Baldwin stopped the drought, but Sandy Cohen drained back-to-back triples as the lead grew to 10-17. Zipser answered from deep and Reynolds also hit a three-pointer to get Bayern within 18-21 after 10 minutes. James Gist evened the game with a three-point play to start the second quarter. Zizic scored twice in the paint and Wilbekin knocked down a triple as Maccabi went up 24-30. Bayern countered with a 9-2 spurt including a Weiler-Babb triple to regain the lead, 33-32. Bender punched back once again from deep and Maccabi went up 33-37 and led 37-38 at the break.

Wilbekin started the second half strong with a floater, an assist on an Elijah Bryant three-pointer and a three-point play in helping Maccabi use a 2-10 surge to move ahead 39-48. Bayern scored just 2 points in the first 5 minutes of the second half, but Reynolds scored 4 points and Zipser drained a three-pointer to pull the hosts within 48-52. A 1-6 spurt increased Maccabi’s cushion to 49-58 and the gap was 51-58 after 30 minutes. DJ Seeley opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and Zipser’s free throws trimmed it to 55-58 before Zizic dunked after more than 3 minutes. A Baldwin three-pointer and dunk knotted the game at 60-60 and his next score put the hosts up 64-62. Baldwin added a layup after a block to extend the gap to 68-64 and Gist drained a big jumper at the end of the shotclock for a 70-66 Bayern advantage. After a Zizic score, John DiBartolomeo outhustled Weiler-Babb for a loose ball and converted a layup with 18 seconds to play to tie the score 70-70. Weiler-Babb made good with 2 free throws with 9.3 seconds left and victory was Bayern’s when Wilbekin’s three-pointer was off the mark.

Home sweet home

Despite there being no home-court advantage in terms of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bayern continues to pick up victories at its Audi Dome. Bayern’s third straight win over Maccabi improved the team’s home record to 10-3 this season.

Reynolds beats former team

This is Jalen Reynolds's second EuroLeague season after he played in 2019-20 for Maccabi. The Bayern big man showed just how much he can do, collecting 15 points including a three-pointer, 3 rebounds and 1 assist after his former team.

Telling numbers

Bayern held Maccabi to just 26.1% shooting on three-pointers and won the rebounding battle 37-26, including 14 offensive rebounds. The home team turned that advantage a 20-10 difference in second-chance points.

Next games

Bayern will head on the road for the next game, taking on Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Tuesday, March 2. Maccabi will host CSKA Moscow on the same evening.

"Every game from now on will be like this. When you win despite those kinds of mistakes, you should always be happy. Tonight was a really difficult game. I want to congratulate and show my great respect to Coach Sfairopoulos and the whole Maccabi team. They put together a great defensive effort. At a certain moment, it looked like they were dominating both ends of the floor. But I have the luck of having a team that sometimes is unaware of some things is an advantage. Three or four months ago I chose to not try and change my team but to go to the war with them. I don’t have enough practice time and time in general to change too many things. So my team doesn’t want to lose games. I understood from the first quarter that it would be a very difficult game. Sometimes you forget there is an opponent who is very talented and has experience and very good guards. They came here with their back to the wall. That was one of their last chances and they put together one hell of a game. I’m happy that we won the game. I’m happy that we were patient enough to take the game where we wanted it. Tonight there is no negative performance by any Bayern player. They all contributed to the win. At this moment, I don’t care how the game looked. I just care about the result. We fought, we came back, we put together an effort. We had a chance to win in a more comfortable way. We messed a little bit two possessions at the end, but we won the game."
SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv
"It was a close game the whole game and we built the game in a rhythm that we wanted. Defensively we were very good. We held Bayern to a low score. Most of the game we had the lead. The most crucial part of the game was the beginning of the fourth quarter. We didn’t execute well on offense. We were struggling and we didn’t move the ball much. On the other side, defensively we were missing a lot of rebounds. We gave up some easy layups. The game was decided by small details. In the end, it was still very open. We had the last shot, we didn’t score, we will continue. The only thing we can do is to continue to fight for our possibilities. As long as we have mathematical chances for the playoffs we will fight for them."

BALDWIN IV, WADE

"It was a tough one from the start. Maccabi’s a hungry team, they have incredible guards and an awesome big man. This was a group effort. I’m so happy everybody came through, got big stops. Nick [Weiler-Babb] going to the line and icing the game for us from the line - he’s done that plenty of times for us this season. On to the next one. It was a gutsy win. We got stops, you see what James Gist brings to our team: his defensive effort, his activity. We’re a very versatile team and we’re doing a good job thus far, but we have seven more to go."
REYNOLDS, JALEN
FC Bayern Munich
"It’s obviously a special night for me playing against a former team. It’s always fun playing against a team you played for in the past. I just wanted to have a chip on my shoulder tonight as far as being an all-around teammate, passing the ball, finishing when they hit me. This is a special night and I’m happy that we got the win."
ZIZIC, ANTE
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv
"They did a great job in the fourth quarter. The whole game, we played hard on both ends in the fourth quarter, they outscored us. They grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and we made a lot of small mistakes which we cannot allow if we want to beat a team like Bayern. We just scored 4 points in the last 50 seconds but anyway, we had a shot for the win, the ball was in our hands and we couldn't take advantage."
