Bayern fights back to beat Maccabi
FC Bayern Munich put together a strong fourth quarter to come back and knock off Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 72-70 at home and get back to its winning ways. Wade Baldwin scored 9 of his team-high 16 points in the final frame and Nick Weiler-Babb decided the game by hitting 2 free throws with 9.3 seconds left to give Bayern a 16-10 record. Jalen Reynolds added 15 points against his former team and Paul Zipser pitched in 10 points for Bayern. Maccabi lost more important ground to the playoff ranks with its third straight defeat to fall to 10-14. Ante Zizic collected 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Maccabi while Scottie Wilbekin had 10 points and 5 assists.
JaJuan Johnson opened the scoring and Vladimir Lucic made it 4-0 early. Maccabi needed more than 2 minutes before Zizic finally scored for the guests, who then went on a 0-11 run including a Dragan Bender triple to go up 4-11. Baldwin stopped the drought, but Sandy Cohen drained back-to-back triples as the lead grew to 10-17. Zipser answered from deep and Reynolds also hit a three-pointer to get Bayern within 18-21 after 10 minutes. James Gist evened the game with a three-point play to start the second quarter. Zizic scored twice in the paint and Wilbekin knocked down a triple as Maccabi went up 24-30. Bayern countered with a 9-2 spurt including a Weiler-Babb triple to regain the lead, 33-32. Bender punched back once again from deep and Maccabi went up 33-37 and led 37-38 at the break.
Wilbekin started the second half strong with a floater, an assist on an Elijah Bryant three-pointer and a three-point play in helping Maccabi use a 2-10 surge to move ahead 39-48. Bayern scored just 2 points in the first 5 minutes of the second half, but Reynolds scored 4 points and Zipser drained a three-pointer to pull the hosts within 48-52. A 1-6 spurt increased Maccabi’s cushion to 49-58 and the gap was 51-58 after 30 minutes. DJ Seeley opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and Zipser’s free throws trimmed it to 55-58 before Zizic dunked after more than 3 minutes. A Baldwin three-pointer and dunk knotted the game at 60-60 and his next score put the hosts up 64-62. Baldwin added a layup after a block to extend the gap to 68-64 and Gist drained a big jumper at the end of the shotclock for a 70-66 Bayern advantage. After a Zizic score, John DiBartolomeo outhustled Weiler-Babb for a loose ball and converted a layup with 18 seconds to play to tie the score 70-70. Weiler-Babb made good with 2 free throws with 9.3 seconds left and victory was Bayern’s when Wilbekin’s three-pointer was off the mark.
Home sweet home
Despite there being no home-court advantage in terms of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bayern continues to pick up victories at its Audi Dome. Bayern’s third straight win over Maccabi improved the team’s home record to 10-3 this season.
Reynolds beats former team
This is Jalen Reynolds's second EuroLeague season after he played in 2019-20 for Maccabi. The Bayern big man showed just how much he can do, collecting 15 points including a three-pointer, 3 rebounds and 1 assist after his former team.
Telling numbers
Bayern held Maccabi to just 26.1% shooting on three-pointers and won the rebounding battle 37-26, including 14 offensive rebounds. The home team turned that advantage a 20-10 difference in second-chance points.
Next games
Bayern will head on the road for the next game, taking on Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Tuesday, March 2. Maccabi will host CSKA Moscow on the same evening.
