Khimki Moscow Region thrashed PAOK Thessaloniki 102-68 in Group J and took a step forward on the way to the Eurocup Eighthfinals as the group leader with a 3-1 record. Khimki used a 10-2 run that bridged the first two quarters to get a 30-18 margin, which they increased to 49-30 late in the second with 8 consecutive points. After leading 51-36 at halftime, Khimki further increased the margin into the 30s for a comfortable win. Petteri Koponen led the winners by scoring 21 points on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown. Sergey Monya added 16, Tyrese Rice scored 12 and dished 8 assists, Tyler Honeycutt netted 12 points and Paul Davis 10. James Augustine pulled down 12 rebounds for Khimki. Kevin Langford scored 17 for PAOK, Marc Carter 12 and Apollon Tsochlas 10 in defeat.

Carter gave an early 5-8 margin to the visitors, but Davis used an assist from Honeycutt and made it 15-9. Honeycutt extended the lead to 20-12 from the foul line. J.R. Bremer answered from mid range to get within 20-16, but a 10-2 run capped by back-to-back jumpers posted by Koponen that bridged the first two quarters gave a comfortable 30-18 advantage to Khimki. Tsochlas heated up for the guests and the duo of Rice and Augustine fueled the home team to a 43-30 cushion with three minutes left in the half. Koponeni scored from mid-range to cap an 8-0 run to raise the margin to 49-30. Kostas Kakaroudis fixed the score at 51-36 for the hosts at halftime.

Khimki continued to push with a 22-5 run to make it a 30-point game, 71-41, a difference that Davis extended to 78-45 at the end of the third quarter. During the last 10 minutes Langford and Tsochlas tried to rally PAOK, while the home team tried to find spectacular plays to excite the crowd. Three-pointers by Maxim Sakharov and Maxim Sheleketo fixed the final score.

“I’m happy that the game turned to be this way. It was probably the first time this season when we have showed our potential at 80 percent of our real level. The game was tough because it’s always hard to play the same team twice in a row. My guys did their best; they gave great energy and desire on the court. We say that basketball is a game for pleasure, so today it was really jolly for us to play and I’m sure the fans liked the match. We rebounded well and allowed our opponent to take only 4 offensive boards. Also I’d like to point out our triples as we have many good shooters. So we dominated today, but the result doesn’t say anything about PAOK’s level. They are a very disciplined team with the same coach for many seasons. I thought that PAOK would be the second team to enter the playoffs from our group.”

“Congratulations to our opponent on this win. We knew that last week we didn’t play well enough at our arena. We also knew that this game would be really tough. After first ten minutes it was a tough game because our opponent made everything from outside and inside. It was really difficult to stop them on defense and every minute until the end of the game the difference between the teams was obvious on the floor. We can say that the main reason is three-point shooting. Last week they didn’t make so many shots and we made some. But tonight we didn’t make shots and they made almost everything.”
