FIATC Joventut Badalona evened its record at 1-1 in Group B of the ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT in L’Hospitalet with a 64-70 victory over ASVEL Lyon Villeurbanne. Xabi Lopez led Joventut in scoring with 19 points while Albert Real collected 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, six steals and one block, and Matt Haarms picked up five points and 10 rebounds. ASVEL dropped to 0-2 thanks mainly to 32 turnovers committed. Lucas Herrgott paced the French team with 20 points and seven rebounds while Amine Noua scored 11 points and Kevin Hangoue had four points, 12 rebounds and two steals in the loss.

After two ties early on, Noua had six points and Herrgott scored four as ASVEL Lyon built up a 12-4 lead. Nenad Dimitijevic trimmed the gap to 12-8 before a three-point play from Louis Weber gave ASVEL the lead 15-8. But the French club failed to score on its nine possessions in the final 4:51 minutes of the first quarter as Joventut put together an 0-8 run to lead 15-16 after 10 minutes. Pau Truno increased the lead to 15-18 before ASVEL Lyon knotted the game at 19-19. Real answered with two baskets and Lopez also scored in building a 20-27 cushion while ASVEL managed just one free throw in a 5:33-minute stretch. After the deficit was down to 24-28, Oscar Sanchez pushed the lead to 24-31. ASVEL scored on its final two possessions of the first half to trim the game to 30-31 at intermission.

Briki’s two free throws gave ASVEL Lyon the lead 32-31 and it was 36-31 after two Herrgott scores. Lopez responded with a layup, three-pointer and a basket to make it 38-40. Lopez came up with another score and Real had a three-ball and a steal and layup as Joventut finished a 4-16 run over five minutes for a 40-47 advantage. Thomas Vincent trimmed the gap to 45-49 before Lopez’s layup at the buzzer to leave Joventut up 45-51 after three quarters. Dimitijevic opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play for a 45-54 lead but ASVEL bounced back with a 9-0 run to knot the game at 54-54. Elies Velasco’s basket snapped a three-minute scoreless stretch and Oscar Amo made it 54-58. Noua came up with a three-point play and Romain Poinas hit two free throws to give the French side a 59-58 lead. And the lead was 61-60 with 3:46 minutes to play. But Lopez responded with a score and Truno had a three-point play to make it 61-65 and ASVEL Lyon went seven possessions without a score including four missing free throws and two offensive rebounds as Joventut opened the cushion to 61-70 with 15 seconds to play.
