In one of the most outstanding comebacks in Eurocup's recent history, Besiktas JK Cola Turka registered its first win in Group D by edging Telekom Baskets Bonn 102-98 in overtime in Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday night. Besiktas rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final 4 minutes of regulation and managed to improve to 1-1 in the Group D standings. Meanwhile, Bonn dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to rejoin the Last 16 race. Mire Chatman became the game hero, scoring 20 of his 35 points in the final 9 minutes. Chatman added 8 assists and as many as 12 fouls drawn. Muratcan Guler added 19 points, Haluk Yildirim had 15 while Cehver Ozer pulled down 13 rebounds for Besiktas. Bryce Taylor led Bonn with 28 points. Chris Ensminger added 22 and 16 rebounds for a monster double-double, Ronald Dupree had 17 points, Jared Jordan got 15 and Tim Ohlbrecht 10 for the guests, that led for the best part of the game and had a 69-82 margin with 4 minutes left in regulation. Chatman and Omer Unver fueled a 12-2 run that brought Besiktas back to life, 81-84. It all came down to the final seconds of regulation, in which free throws by Chatman sent the game to overtime, 88-88. Once in the extra period, an unstoppable Chatman followed a go-head triple with free throws for a 99-94 Besiktas lead. Free throws by Guler and Yildirim sealed the outcome down the stretch.
Taylor got Bonn going and Ensminger added a put-back but three-pointers by Chatman and Ozer gave Besiktas its first lead, 6-4. Yildirim joined the three-point shootout but Taylor got some help from Dupree and a three-point play by Jordan for a 9-11 Bonn lead. Chatman shined with consecutive baskets buy Dupree and Ensminger answered to keep Bonn ahead, 13-17. Lonny Baxter dunked it but he didn't find much help around now. Meanwhile, Taylor followed free throws with a dunk in a 2-8 run that Patrick Flomo capped with a jumper to gave Bonn an eight-point lead, 17-25. A layup by Adem Oren got Besiktas within 19-25 after 10 minutes. Muratgan Guler had 6 quick points early in the second quarter and Oren struck from downtown to get Besiktas as close as 28-29. Dupree buried a triple, as Besiktas tried to speed up the game tempo. Chatman took over with a put-back layup and Baxter soon helped the hosts to tie the game, 34-34. Jordan rescued the guests with consecutive baskets and Ohlbrecht added a three-point play for a 35-41 score. Chatman and Baxter kept pacing Besiktas but Taylor followed a dunk with free throws to fix the halftime score at 39-46.
A three-pointer by Ohlbrecht and a layup by Taylor gave Bonn a 12-point lead, 39-51, immediately after the break. Yildirim rescued Besiktas with consecutive baskets, as the hosts quickly improved their defense. A put-back layup by Ozer ignited a 6-0 run that Chatman capped with a jumper for a 49-53 Besiktas deficit. Dupree silenced the crowd with a jumper, Ohlbrecht scored again and Taylor took over with a three-point play to keep Bonn out of trouble at 51-60. Chatman stayed on fire and Guler struck twice from downtown to bring the hosts within 61-65. Dupree followed a triple with free throws but a put-back dunk by Ozer got Besiktas as close as 63-69 after 30 minutes. Besiktas struggled to score early in the fourth quarter while Ensminger and Taylor allowed Bonn to get a 13-point lead, 67-80, with over 4 minutes left. Free throws by Johannes Strasser seemed to seal the outcome, 72-84, with under 3 minutes remaining. Chatman, however, made 4-of-4 free throws, igniting a 9-0 run that Unver capped with a triple for a 81-84 deficit. Jordan followed a triple with 1-of-2 free throws but Yildirim also struck from downtown while Chatman followed a layup with free throws to tie it at 88-88. Dupree and Yildirim missed three-point shots at the end of regulation.
Both teams went scoreless in overtime for almost 2 minutes until Guler made free throws. Chatman soon added a layup for a 92-88 Besiktas lead, after a 20-4 run. Taylor scored again while Jordan added a put-back layup for a 92-92 tie. Chatman and Taylor traded baskets for a 94-94 tie with 2 minutes left, as the game turned once again into a thriller. Chatman - who else? - buried a critical three-pointer and soon added free throws to seal the outcome, 99-94. Ensminger scored around the basket and traded free throws with Guler for a 101-98 Bonn deficit. A free throw by Yildirim allowed all Besiktas fans to celebrate an incredible win.
