Djedovic, Renfroe lead FC Bayern Munich over Banvit and into Eighthfinals

FC Bayern Munich booked its ticket to the Eurocup Eighthfinals by defeating Banvit Bandirma 77-62 at home in Group G. Nihad Djedovic led the way for Bayern with 28 points and 6 rebounds, while Alex Renfroe collected 13 points, 8 rebounds and 13 assists. Dusko Savanovic chipped in 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in the win, which pushed the home team to 4-1 in the Last 32. Banvit dropped to 3-2 in the group despite Adrien Moerman scoring 20 points, while Dominique Johnson picked up 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists and Courtney Fortson had 11 points in the loss.

Renfroe opened the scoring for Bayern and the hosts pushed the lead to 6-0. Moerman got Banvit on the scoring board with a three-pointer to start a 0-13 run, which featured another three from Moerman and 5 points from Johnson to lead 6-13. Djedovic snapped a nearly five-minute scoreless drought, but Moermann knocked down another triple and Fortson’s free throw had the guests ahead 8-17. After 4 straight Bayern points, Fortson knocked down a three and the gap was 14-20 after 10 minutes. Djedovic scored 8 points as Bayern opened the second quarter with a 10-0 surge to go up 24-20. Banvit started the quarter slowly as Fortson’s free throws were the guests’ first points after more than three minutes of play. A 7-1 Bayern spurt increased the advantage to 31-23 and it was 35-25 after a three-pointer from Djedovic. Banvit was able to trim the deficit to 39-35 after a Moerman triple and Johnson free throws. But Anton Gavel scored at the buzzer to give the hosts a 41-35 lead at the break.

Johnson started the second half with a three-pointer and Gasper Vidmar made it a 41-40 game. Renfroe’s free throws got Bayern going in the second half before a pair of baskets from Moerman put Banvit up 43-44. The lead switched hands with the next five scores. Renfroe made it 51-49 on a three-point play to start an 11-0 Bayern run to pull ahead 59-49. Jackie Carmichael was able to stop Banvit’s scoreless rut just before the end of the third quarter, which finished with Bayern up 59-51. Vidmar had the margin down to 59-53 to start the fourth quarter, but John Bryant and Savanovic converted back-to-back scores to make it a 10-point game again. Djedovic’s three-pointer increased the advantage to 68-55 midway through the fourth quarter. Fortson’s triple got the margin to 10 points, but Renfroe scored the next 4 points and Djedovic knocked down his third three-pointer to make it 75-60 with less than two minutes to play.

“This was a great performance by our team. I cannot remember that we have ever played such good defense. Especially in the second half our defense was unbelievably good. It was our plan to take Slaughter and Fortson out of the game and we were successful at it. The team put the maximum effort in it. With such an attitude, anything is possible in this competition.”
ERNAK, SELCUK
Banvit Bandirma
“Congratulations to Bayern Munich. They played very clever and deserved to win. Bayern took our offensive out of rhythm and had too many fast break chances. This is not normal, but we were not able to compensate for our injuries. Now we have to win our home game against Bilbao.”
