Eriksson's onslaught lifts ALBA past Khimki

ALBA Berlin snapped a three-game road losing streak in picking up an 81-100 victory at Khimki Moscow Region thanks to a historic showing by Marcus Eriksson. The ALBA sharp-shooter tied the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague record of 10 made three-pointers in scoring a career-high and club-record 36 points while registering a performance index rating of 41, another personal high. Luke Sikma and Simone Fontecchio added 18 points each. Ben Lammers collected 11 points and Peyton Siva matched him while distributing 9 assists. The win improved ALBA's record to 10-18 and 5-9 on the road. Khimki played a strong first half but could not stop Eriksson and the ALBA bombers as its record fell to 3-24. Khimki wasted a career-high 29 points from Jordan Mickey while Alexey Shved had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 12 assists and 3 steals and Errick McCollum tallied 12 points.

Sikma's three-pointer and 5 straight points by Fontecchio gave ALBA a 0-8 lead. Vyacheslav Zaytsev's layup got Khimki on the board but Eriksson answered from deep for a 4-11 lead. ALBA's offense went cold as Khimki got a triple from Shved and 6 points from Mickey in a 13-0 run to a 19-13 lead. Mickey hit a triple, too, as Khimki's advantage grew to 25-20 after 10 minutes. Mickey dunked and Sikma exchanged dunks to start the second quarter. Egor Vialtsev added a triple for the hosts but ALBA responded with a 2-9 run to pull within 32-31. McCollum and Sergey Monia bookended a 12-5 Khimki surge to move back ahead 44-36. When McCollum hit from deep just before the buzzer, Khimki had a 47-41 halftime lead. Mickey's 4 points early in the second half were bettered by 4 from Eriksson but Monia's three-pointer meant Khimki's first double-digit lead, 56-46. ALBA took advantage of an unsportsmanlike foul by Monia to get 4 points and close in on the lead as Sikma scored 9 and Siva nailed a triple at 65-63. ALBA reclaimed the lead 67-68 on Eriksson's three-pointer to finish the third quarter. Sergey Karasev tied for Khimki 70-70 from downtown early in the fourth, but the guests got three-pointers from Siva and Fontecchio before Eriksson drained a pair of them to pull ahead 76-87 with less than 5 minutes to play. Mickey tried to get Khimki back into the game but Eriksson knocked down a long jumper to extend the advantage to 78-91 with under 4 minutes to play. The Swedish bomber added three more triples in the final 2 minutes to end all doubts.

Eriksson matches three-point record

Marcus Eriksson showed everyone just how dangerous he can be if he gets hot with this 10 made three-pointers on 13 attempts. The 10 triples tied the EuroLeague record which has twice been recorded by Shane Larkin of Anadolu Efes Istanbul as well as by Andrew Goudelock of Fenerbahce Istanbul.

ALBA played some great team basketball as they collected 31 assists, which set a new club record and tied for the seventh-most in competition history. It also tied the season high in the EuroLeague.

Telling numbers

Eriksson's sharp-shooting helped ALBA shoot 48.6% from deep and the guests made 17 of 20 free throws for 85.0%. Khimki hit 30.3% of its three-pointers and made 11 of 11 foul shots. ALBA also was able to get out and run, picking up 19 fastbreak points compared to just 8 for Khimki.

Next games

Khimki will head on the road for its next game when it plays at Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Thursday, March 11. ALBA will have a third straight road game as it travels to France to take on LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne on the same night.

“It was great. It didn’t start that great. The defense wasn’t too good. They were making shots, but we just kind of stuck with it, which is what you want to do on the road. Marcus got hot and gave us kind of a big lead at the end. So, we're happy with the road win. We always want to crash the offensive glass. I don’t think I was doing as good a job the last couple of games so I made an effort to do a lot of that today. And I got a couple. But more than anything: a great team win and really happy with how we finished it out.”
