Fenerbahce rolls on with win at ASVEL

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul earned a big win in the fight for the playoffs as it defeated LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne 86-90 on the road on Friday. Nando De Colo poured in 24 points as Fenerbahce improved to 17-11 with its 12th win in the last 13 games. Marko Guduric and Dyshawn Pierre both added 13 points and Kyle O'Quinn picked up 11 points in the victory. ASVEL had David Lighty lead the way with 15 points while Norris Cole and Ismael Bako both tallied 14 and William Howard had 12. ASVEL, having lost two in a row since a six-game winning streak, fell to 12-16.

Lighty started the game for the hosts and his three-pointer made it 5-2. Ahmet Duverioglu scored Fenerbahce's first basket and Guduric followed with 2 three-pointers. On the second, Lighty was ruled for an unsportsmanlike foul that let De Colo add a triple to make it a six-point possession and a 5-15 lead. Guerschon Yabusele sparked a comeback with 3 baskets and Howard drained a triple in a 13-3 run to knot the game before Fenerbahce went up 18-20 after 10 minutes. Amine Noua's three-point play for ASVEL started a string of four straight lead changes as Bako's 5 points put the hosts ahead 29-25. Fenerbahce found its rhythm again and reeled off a 2-11 run with 5 points from Pierre to open a 31-36 cushion. ASVEL punched back to tie 36-36 before the visitors again edged ahead, 38-40 at the break. De Colo's layup finished a 6-0 run to a 38-46 Fenerbahce advantage after the break. Cole answered with 6 points of his own, however, and Moustapha Fall's dunk evened it again, 46-46. Lighty added a triple and Cole hit a jumper and the hosts were up 54-50. That lead evaporated quickly with a 0-7 spurt by Fenerbahce, but ASVEL was not fazed and moved back ahead as Lighty's jumper at the buzzer put the French side up 60-59 after 30 minutes. Howard's big dunk and Charles Kahudi's three-pointer pushed the gap to 65-61 early in the final quarter. Pierre stood strong and picked up 5 points to tie 70-70. Even though Cole and Lighty put ASVEL up 76-74, Lorenzo Brown and De Colo hit back for Fenerbahce to flip the scoreboard to 76-80. Lighty answered with a three-pointer but De Colo fed O'Quinn for a dunk and scored on his own to keep the guests up 84-81. ASVEL would tie it again 84-84 and things looked good when Jan Vesely split free throws with 49 seconds left. But Cole missed a jumper with 30 seconds left and De Colo nailed a dagger three-pointer with 13 seconds left to go up 84-88, enough to send the victory back to Istanbul.

Almost perfect with Guduric

Marko Guduric once again played a major role in Fenerbahce's win with 13 points and 2 rebounds. His arrival has transformed Fenerbahce as the team is 12-1 in the 13 games since he returned to the club.

Pivotal performer

Nando De Colo not only led Fenerbahce in scoring with 24 points but he also had 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. He drained 3 three-pointers which means he passed Marcus Brown into 15th place on the EuroLeague's all-time list with 328 career triples.

Telling numbers

Fenerbahce hit 10-of-19 three-pointers (52.6%) while also amassing 19 points off turnovers to 11 for ASVEL.

Next games

ASVEL will remain at home for its next game as it hosts ALBA Berlin on March 11. Fenerbahce will have a third straight road game as it heads to Spain to play Valencia Basket on March 11.

“Of course, you are frustrated because you play basketball to win. So, of course, frustration is there. I think in the first half we were not going in the right direction with 8 turnovers and 8 offensive rebounds. In the second half, we only had 2 turnovers and we gave ourselves a chance to win the game. Afterwards, what I explained to the team is that when you play big teams like that, details are important. There were too many easy baskets for them on stuff like back-cuts. Even on the last play with (Nando) De Colo, David (Lighty) and Mous (Fall) have to talk on the pick-and-roll. We didn’t talk and we let the best player on the team hit a wide-open three.”
KOKOSKOV, IGOR
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
“It was a team effort. They are a very difficult team to play. Very physical, strong. They were in the paint and making threes. That’s a tough combination, when they can get into the paint any time they want with post-ups and then on the perimeter they are shooting threes. Howard had an open game with a couple of threes. That kept our defense stretched on the perimeter. But overall, I am really happy for our squad. Credit goes to the players. They came focused, prepared, mentally prepared and they accepted the challenge. It was a very challenging game. I’m very pleased with the outcome.”

“We know where we are right now. We know that March is a very difficult month. We know we can move up with a victory but we know we can go down quickly, too. So we need to stay focused. That is most important. And we did that tonight. It wasn’t an easy game; two games in a week is tough but we got it done. I’m really happy to be back in France, even if it’s just one game and I don’t have time to do too much. But the most important thing is to go game by game, and tonight is another step up for us.”
PIERRE, DYSHAWN
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
“That’s a very physical team. They play really well at home. We knew that especially after playing a couple of days ago that we had to be focused tonight. So we’re happy that we got the win. We really needed this to go forward in the playoffs race.”
